You need to think about things like the weight of your luggage, the size of your carry-on, the TSA requirements, COVID restrictions, and, for some travelers, how to get your refrigerated medications from point A to point B intact. Medicine that needs to be refrigerated includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/novolog\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/augmentin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certain antibiotic suspensions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/humira\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biologics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/norman-tomaka-05387912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Norman Tomaka<\/a>, M.Pharm., a clinical consultant pharmacist in Melbourne, Florida, and spokesperson for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmacist.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Pharmacists Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, requires plenty of forethought. You can\u2019t just toss your meds into a handbag with an ice pack and call it good, he says. If you do, you might find yourself scrambling for a replacement prescription once you reach your destination.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Guidelines for traveling with refrigerated medications<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>1. Review TSA rules.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Familiarizing yourself with TSA regulations for medications is your starting point for flying with refrigerated medicine, Tomaka advises. The TSA website provides <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/travel-tips\/can-you-pack-your-meds-pill-case-and-more-questions-answered\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a handy list of basic guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fortunately, the 3.4-ounce rule for taking liquids through airport security does not apply to medications), as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/special-procedures\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">general information about traveling with medical conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For international travelers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/features\/travel-medicine\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guide to traveling abroad with medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an excellent resource; anyone traveling abroad should consult it before leaving.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Learn how your meds should be stored.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve done all of that, Tomaka advises finding out whether refrigeration for your medication is mandatory or simply <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preferred<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (your pharmacist should be able to supply this information). If it isn\u2019t mandatory, refrigerating it once you reach your destination might suffice (depending on the length of the trip). If it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mandatory, you\u2019ll need to find a way to keep it cool. Either way, do not put your prescription meds in checked luggage.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/5-tips-for-traveling-with-prescription-drugs\/\">5 tips for traveling with prescription drugs<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Pack medication safely.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNever pack your medications in luggage,\u201d Tomaka says. \u201cFor your safety and security, it needs to go in a carry-on bag.\u201d Always leave medications in their original containers and place them inside a labeled plastic bag before putting them inside the cooling container, Tomaka advises.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4. Use portable cooling.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of keeping your meds cool, Tomaka says there are several gadgets and portable coolers you can buy that are designed specifically for this purpose. \u201cThe (portable coolers) have separate compartments for the cooling agent as well as the medication, and they are very easy to present to the TSA agent for air travel,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also use your own portable ice chests and cooler gel packs (like the kind used for lunch boxes), says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/victoria-sowards-bba48519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vicki Sowards<\/a>, director of nursing resources for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.passporthealthusa.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Passport Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a network of travel medicine and immunization clinics across North America. However, if you go that route make sure the gel packs are labeled as such so they don\u2019t raise any eyebrows at the security checkpoint, Tomaka says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you would rather use ice, that\u2019s fine too, says Sowards, as long you are able to replace the ice before it completely melts\u2014you don\u2019t want melted ice leaking into your medication and\/or its packaging As for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ice, don\u2019t even think about it, says Tomaka.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDry ice is dangerous for multiple reasons,\u201d he says. \u201cOne, you don\u2019t want to handle it; and, two, it freezes [which would destroy the medication].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/in-flight-emergencies\/\">Are you prepared for an in-flight medical emergency?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><b>5. Make sure the temperature stays stable.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly, no matter what you use to keep your refrigerated medications cool be sure to keep the temperature stable throughout the trip.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGoing in and out of refrigeration can break down the stability of the medication,\u201d Tomaka says, adding that if you want an extra layer of protection you can always place a thermometer in the container to make sure it stays at the proper temp. Not sure what the proper temperature is? Ask your pharmacist.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>6. Talk to airline staff.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomaka also suggests talking to the flight attendants\u2014they may be able to place your meds in a refrigerator for you, or supply you with fresh ice. And, he urges travelers to carry copies of prescriptions, letters from doctors, and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/disability_notification_card_508.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TSA medical notification card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that lists all the medications (refrigerated and non-refrigerated) you are carrying.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This way, all won\u2019t be lost in the event of a refrigeration mishap.
