Does your doctor <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need to know about those two glasses of wine you have every other night or that you\u2019re popping <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aspirin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aspirin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> daily?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s tempting to tell a few white lies or omit some info, what your doctor doesn\u2019t know <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hurt you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;[Your doctor] is really looking after your total health, and it&#8217;s important for them to know as much about you as they can\u2014not only health-wise, but also your personal and family history, and what your habits are like at home,\u201d explains Robert J. Samuelson, M.D., a pulmonologist, internist, and primary care doctor at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.horizonmedicalgroup.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Horizon Medical Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re feeling nervous about sharing the information, remember physicians have likely seen and heard it all before, and thanks to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/hipaa\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIPAA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you\u2019re guaranteed patient confidentiality. Your healthcare provider can\u2019t share details with your partner or children\u2014unless you allow it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what should you open up about at your next visit? For starters, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/questions-to-ask-a-doctor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ask questions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about what\u2019s bothering you, encourages Rachel Trippett, MD, a family physician with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/albuquerque\/healthcarefacilities\/zuniramah\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Public Health Service Indian Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New Mexico. \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to share whatever worries about your health you may have,\u201d she says. \u201cEven if we don\u2019t know the answer, we can find out for you.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, it\u2019s important to give details on the following pieces of patient information.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>1. Any medications or supplements you\u2019re taking<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should tell a doctor about all the medicines you\u2019re taking, including drugs prescribed by another doctor and over-the-counter treatments\u2014including vitamins and supplements. This helps your primary care provider understand if your symptoms could be caused by a medication. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven things like ibuprofen or naproxen, if you\u2019re taking them daily, can impact cardiovascular disease,\u201d says Dr. Trippett.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your physician is prescribing medicine, they\u2019ll also want to be aware of any possible drug interactions that can lead to unpleasant side effects. The FDA has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/resources-you\/drug-interactions-what-you-should-know\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the ways medications can interact with other drugs, food, beverages, and health conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>2. Your family and your medical history<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your family\u2019s medical background helps your doctor understand if you\u2019re at increased risk for certain diseases and specific symptoms to look out for. \u201cKnowing if there\u2019s a history of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer\u2014and the type of cancer\u2014are the big ones,\u201d Dr. Samuelson says. If you\u2019re not sure, try and talk to a parent or guardian who might have a fuller picture. If you were adopted or don\u2019t have access to family history, make sure to let your doctor know that as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And don\u2019t forget to tell a doctor about your personal medical history as well. Any surgeries or health issues you\u2019ve had in the past could inform future care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People don\u2019t see a connection between what they\u2019re experiencing now and what happened five years ago,\u201d Dr. Trippett says. \u201cOr they assume that all the information is front and center in their medical records. It\u2019s our job to hunt things down, but it can really save time if they bring it up.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. How much you smoke and drink (and if you take drugs)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients often fudge these numbers, but it is important to share how much you\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> smoking and drinking. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of patients are embarrassed, or they might not know how much they\u2019re actually drinking and smoking,\u201d Dr. Samuelson says. \u201cBut this does have a significant impact on your health.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking and drinking can increase your risk of certain types of cancers, heart disease, and more. But it can also affect how your body reacts to medications, your mental health, and even what types of surgeries you can get. Withholding this information can make it more difficult for your doctor to get to the bottom of what\u2019s going on with your health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dabble in recreational drugs? It\u2019s best to let the doc know about this, too. You will be surprised to learn that street narcotics can lead to low testosterone levels, infertility, and even adrenal insufficiency. Injectable drug use can lead to more specific bacterial infections which may require certain antibiotics to be more effective. If you\u2019re trying to get pregnant<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For women, you should tell a doctor if you\u2019re wanting to get pregnant\u2014or if you\u2019re planning to try in the near future. This could impact the medications your doctor prescribes, but she can also inform you on what to expect. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-birth-control-pill-contraceptive-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re taking birth control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she can advise you about how and when to stop it. Your doctor will likely recommend prenatal vitamins and you can discuss any lifestyle changes you may need to change, such as eating raw fish or drinking.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>5. Any major lifestyle changes<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, personal issues can affect your health, but you might not even think about telling your physician.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Samuelson says sometimes he has patients visit and he can\u2019t figure out the medical explanation for their problems. \u201cThen I learn that they\u2019re going through a divorce or lost someone close to them,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s important to know.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other changes he suggests mentioning are financial issues, which can interfere with getting medications or access to healthcare; if you\u2019re at risk of losing your health insurance; or personal issues with your partner or children.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIt&#8217;s important to have an idea of the whole picture, so [you and your doctor] can put together a plan to stay healthy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Going to see your doctor can be an intimidating experience; after all, this is likely a person you only see during an annual visit or when you\u2019re already feeling ill.
