Barbecues, time with family and friends, fireworks\u2014what\u2019s not to love? Well, for our four-legged friends, quite a bit. Pets and fireworks don\u2019t play nicely. The consistent booming and popping of fireworks around the U.S. holiday can be a taxing time for pets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And just because your dog doesn\u2019t crawl under your bed or your cat doesn\u2019t curl up in your closet behind a pile of clothes, doesn\u2019t mean they are anxiety-free. Pets can exhibit stress in several ways, says Melissa Lehmann, DVM, a veterinarian at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Union Veterinary Clinic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Washington, D.C. Dogs might hide, shake, yawn, lick their lips, pant, pace, refuse treats, or cower. Cats can show anxiety by hiding, crouching, or being restless; or they might exhibit it through dilated pupils, increased vocalization, hypersalivation, and sometimes even increased aggression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So that everyone in your family can have a happy 4th, we\u2019ve compiled a list of tips and tricks to help you help your pets through the annual snap, crackle, and pop.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"desensitize-your-pet-ahead-of-time\"><b>Desensitize your pet ahead of time<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not a quick fix, you can prepare your pet for fireworks with counterconditioning. Behavior technique involves presenting a scary stimulus to a dog, slowly and at a low threshold level, then rewarding the dog for not reacting, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/jcha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Ha<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a certified applied animal behaviorist and emeritus research professor at University of Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConnect good things (high quality food treats!) with scary things,\u201d Ha recommends. \u201c[Then] scary becomes good&#8230; You are not altering a behavior (directly) but altering an emotional response: anxiety to happiness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ha says counterconditioning is more effective if owners receive training and guidance from a qualified behaviorist; but, if you are flying solo, he recommends playing a recording of fireworks, not too loud, a few times a day for at least a week before the 4th, then giving your dog a reward\u2014such as a small piece of hot dog\u2014if he or she doesn\u2019t go bonkers. Anxiety will slowly be replaced by the dog looking around for the food treat. After about a week, most dogs will be conditioned to the noise. However, if your pet is immediately overwhelmed by the noise, this method should not be continued. It could have the opposite effect and reinforce the panic behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"get-prescription-medicine-in-advance\"><b>Get prescription medicine in advance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider going to your vet for \u201cevent meds,\u201d short-acting anti-anxiety medications\u2014but only give if prescribed. A medicine such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluoxetine-hcl\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xanax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can work, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abwellnesscenter.com\/team\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amy Pike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DVM, a veterinary behaviorist in Northern Virginia, who warns pet owners <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to give their pets their own prescription.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust like humans, you have to find the right [drug, and] you have to find the right dose,\u201d Dr. Pike says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluoxetine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluoxetine coupons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xanax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"leave-town-altogether\"><b>Leave town altogether<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you know your pet has severe firework anxieties, consider leaving town <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your pet and going on a quiet retreat. While city cats and dogs might be used to the constant loud bangs of urban life, fireworks can still trigger anxieties. You could also opt for a kennel in the country, but only if your pet has visited it before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDon&#8217;t just drop dogs off at a new kennel on the Fourth of July and expect them to be happy,\u201d says Ha who penned the book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Dog-Behavior-Modern-Science-Companions\/dp\/0128164980\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dog Behavior: Modern Science and Our Canine Companions<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"purchase-a-vest\"><b>Purchase a vest\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome animals may be helped by options such as anxiety vests, pheromone collars, [and] calming treats,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/capitolhillbid.org\/go\/union-veterinary-clinic\">Dr. Lehmann<\/a> says. With researchers from Tufts University, Ha conducted a study in 2013 on the effectiveness of compression-type vests. \u201cThey work for some dogs and they work for short-term situations,&#8221; Ha said of his research findings, which were funded by the company that makes the product, Anxiety Wrap. But Ha adds, \u201cIt\u2019s not a magic solution for all forms of anxiety.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"give-your-dog-extra-exercise\"><b>Give your dog extra exercise\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring your dog to a dog park, take him for a run or get in a good long walk. This mental and physical exercise can help keep your dog calm for the rest of the day. Walk\u00a0your dog at least an hour before dark and before the fireworks start.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bring-pets-inside-and-shut-the-windows\"><b>Bring pets inside and shut the windows<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not leave dogs in the yard even if they have a dog house. That\u2019s because it won\u2019t offer them noise protection from fireworks, and they may still get scared, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seniortailwaggers.com\/team\/dr-jamie-whittenburg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jamie Whittenburg, DVM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">veterinarian at seniortailwaggers.com and d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irector of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petvetlubbock.com\/our-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kingsgate Animal Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Lubbock, Texas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And dogs should never be tied up outside (fireworks or not)\u2014it\u2019s dangerous, and may lead to injuries and choking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your best bet is to keep your dogs safely inside where they cannot get scared and escape, Dr. Whittenberg says. If you plan to put your pet in the garage or basement, make sure this option is not new to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn an ideal situation, you would be home with your pet so you can be there to gauge their needs,\u201d Dr. Lehmann says. But if you can\u2019t, bringing them inside is the best option. Make sure the area is animal-safe and well lit (do not leave dogs in the dark). Consider turning on the TV or radio\u2014but not too loud\u2014to drown out the sound of fireworks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"do-not-punish-a-pet-for-being-scared\"><b>Do not punish a pet for being scared<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Punishing your pet because it\u2019s afraid of loud noises is the wrong reaction, and could lead to reinforcement of their fear. Your job as a pet owner is to quell your dog\u2019s or cat\u2019s anxiety by trying to redirect the animal\u2019s attention.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What\u2019s more, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dogs feed off of their owner\u2019s emotions\u2014so if the fireworks are making <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anxious or angry, your dog will feel it, too, Dr. Whittenburg says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, try shutting windows and comforting your dog to help them through their anxiety, Dr. Whittenburg advises. Medications also play a role for firework averse dogs, so contact your veterinarian in advance of the anticipated fireworks. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fireworks will affect each pet differently: Some dogs may act as if they are not bothered at all, while others may hide, shake, or try to run away, says Dr. Whittenbug.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the fireworks are over and residual \u201cunofficial fireworks\u201d have ended, check on your pets\u2019 moods. If they exhibit signs of stress such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panting, pacing, hiding, unwillingness to eat and play, or shaking, it may be a sign that they are frightened or anxious. Keep them close to you until they recover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fourth of July festivities can be an anxious time for our furry friends, so be sure to offer them plenty of patience and reassurance.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Fourth of July is a favorite holiday for many.
