Possible side effects like low blood pressure and kidney problems can also be more dangerous for older adults. For instance, low <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-pressure-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. This dramatically increases the risk of severe side effects like high potassium, very low blood pressure, and acute kidney damage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"aliskiren\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aliskiren<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aliskiren-fumarate\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aliskiren<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the generic version of the brand-name drug <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tekturna\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tekturna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Like ACE inhibitors, aliskiren is primarily used to lower blood pressure. Combining it with Entresto can cause dangerously low blood pressure, which may trigger extreme lightheadedness or loss of consciousness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"potassium-sparing-diuretics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potassium-sparing diuretics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/potassium-sparing-diuretics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potassium-sparing diuretics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/spironolactone\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spironolactone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/triamterene\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triamterene<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amiloride-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amiloride<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are often prescribed for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypertension-treatments-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/diuretics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diuretics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also called water pills, flush out the kidneys by increasing urine output. As the name implies, potassium-sparing diuretics \u201cspare\u201d potassium from being excreted. Combining these with Entresto, which can cause high blood potassium levels, only increases the chance of hyperkalemia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offer over-the-counter pain relief and fever reduction. They can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8313037\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lead to the development of kidney problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is already a risk of taking Entresto. NSAIDS should be used with caution while taking Entresto.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"lithium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithium<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entresto <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4636283\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases lithium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the blood. Given that, taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lithium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lithium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while on Entresto can pose a risk of lithium toxicity. If these two medications are accidentally combined, tell your healthcare provider and monitor for signs of toxicity, such as tremors or loss of consciousness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-not-take-entresto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not take Entresto?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with the following conditions should also avoid taking Entresto:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe hepatic impairment (liver disease)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diabetes-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetic high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that\u2019s being treated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tekturna#coupons\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tekturna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aliskiren-fumarate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aliskiren<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of angioedema after taking an ACE inhibitor or ARB<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of allergic reaction to any of Entresto\u2019s ingredients<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entresto has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK507904\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boxed warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (black box warning) against use during pregnancy. The label states that Entresto can cause injury or death to a developing fetus. Tell your provider immediately if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant while taking Entresto. It\u2019s also essential to consult a healthcare provider before breastfeeding while taking Entresto.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-entresto-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid Entresto side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Entresto side effects can be managed or avoided with a few simple strategies:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take Entresto at the same time each day. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTaking Entresto at the same time each day is more important than whether or not you take it with food,\u201d Dr. Ott says. \u201cEntresto is a twice-daily medication, so scheduling a morning and evening time for dosing about twelve hours apart is ideal.\u201d Consistent timing ensures that the medication stays at a steady level in the body from day to day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Start with a low dose. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/entresto\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entresto dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> starts at 24\/26 mg tablets taken twice daily. Ask your provider about staying at this low dose until your body gets used to the medication.
