Be ready when the time is right, these men\u2019s health ads promise. And as men get older, they may experience more of those occasions when they might need a little boost to help out \u201cwhen the time is right.\u201d That\u2019s because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction-age\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">age is a major factor in the incidence of erectile dysfunction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, regardless of any health conditions that a man might have.<br \/>\n<span data-sheets-root=\"1\" data-sheets-value=\"{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-sheets-userformat=\"{&quot;2&quot;:6849,&quot;3&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:0},&quot;9&quot;:1,&quot;10&quot;:2,&quot;12&quot;:0,&quot;14&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:0},&quot;15&quot;:&quot;Arial&quot;}\" data-sheets-formula=\"=CONCATENATE(R[0]C[-2],R[0]C[-3],R[0]C[-1])\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>But having diabetes increases the likelihood of experiencing ED even more. Fortunately, there are some treatments that you can try to ward off this particular complication of diabetes (and aging). Here\u2019s what you need to know about the association between diabetes and ED.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can diabetes cause erectile dysfunction?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s answer the big question first: Yes, there is an association between erectile dysfunction and diabetes. But it\u2019s important to understand what that means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cErectile dysfunction is a well-recognized complication in diabetes mellitus and it is common in older men,\u201d wrote the authors of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5296448\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cAlso, decreased libido and orgasmic dysfunction are commonly associated with erectile dysfunction in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is, men with Type 2 diabetes mellitus have an increased likelihood of developing ED. The incidence of ED in men with any form of diabetes can vary, of course. But one group of researchers analyzed 145 studies that incorporated nearly 89,000 men, and their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28722225\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noted that the overall prevalence of ED in men with diabetes was nearly 53%. And their research also indicates that Type 2 diabetes and erectile dysfunction is more common than Type 1 diabetes and erectile dysfunction. In fact, they found that the rate of ED in men with Type 2 diabetes was 66.3%, compared with 37.5% in men with Type 1 diabetes. Additionally, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/erectile-dysfunction-survey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 19% of respondents believed their ED was caused by diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erections are more complex than you might think. According to urologist Thomas Masterson, MD, an assistant professor in the department of urology with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doctors.umiamihealth.org\/provider\/Thomas+Ambrose+Masterson%2C+MD\/1080063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Miami Miller School of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0 a man needs five elements for a successful erection: blood flow, nerve function, appropriate levels of the right hormones (such as testosterone), relaxation, and sexual stimulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But people with diabetes, with their higher blood glucose levels, tend to develop some damage to their small blood vessels and nerves. Over time, especially in people with poorly controlled diabetes, this leads to complications of diabetes like microvascular disease, such as diabetic retinopathy, kidney disease, and peripheral nerve damage in the extremities, explains John Anderson, MD, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetesleadership.org\/who-we-are#leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes Leadership Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medical adviser.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The blood vessels in the penis are also very small, and they\u2019re subject to the same potential for damage, which can, yes, impede a man\u2019s ability to get and maintain an erection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Mayo Clinic, other causes of ED include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health conditions such as heart disease, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson\u2019s disease, and low testosterone levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peyronie\u2019s disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgeries that affect the pelvic region or spinal cord<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injuries to the pelvic region or spinal cord<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tobacco use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcoholism<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prostate cancer treatments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for enlarged prostate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain types of medication<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/stress-anxiety-and-erectile-dysfunction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychological factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including stress and depression, can also contribute to problems with erectile function, as can relationship woes. ED as a result of diabetes may not be a life-or-death issue. But sexual dysfunction is certainly a quality-of-life issue. And you should let your healthcare provider know about it so you can discuss treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to overcome erectile dysfunction with diabetes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s the diabetes that\u2019s really a major culprit, you may have also wondered if the treatment you receive for your diabetes may be responsible for some of your erectile function issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one commonly prescribed medication to help people manage Type 2 diabetes, and some research suggests that it has an association with disrupting erections. But some experts suggest that metformin may not actually cause erectile dysfunction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s kind of up in the air about whether it does or it doesn\u2019t,\u201d says Nilem Patel, MD, an endocrinologist in Los Angeles, California, who is affiliated with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doctors.adventisthealth.org\/provider\/Nilem+Patel\/1342047\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adventist Health-White Memorial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt may cause a reduction in testosterone, which is a different mechanism and that may lead to erectile dysfunction.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the 2016 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JCDR<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report noted, metformin is known for leading to reduced levels of testosterone production and sex drive. Consequently, it\u2019s associated with a greater incidence of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-testosterone\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low testosterone-induced erectile dysfunction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But first, you want to focus on controlling your diabetes. Essentially, if you can successfully keep your blood sugar levels within your targeted range, you\u2019re warding off the potential nerve and blood vessel damage. And that can help improve your neuropathy and your circulation, which should then help with any erectile function issues, according to Dr. Patel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you have any specific concerns about the diabetes treatment you\u2019re undergoing, definitely raise your concerns with your doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safe ED medications for men with diabetes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping your blood sugar levels under good control will of course be a priority. But even if you\u2019re doing that, you may still benefit from an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/erectile-dysfunction-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erectile dysfunction medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One caveat: Before you try taking any type of oral medications for ED, the American Diabetes Association recommends talking to your doctor. It\u2019s important to identify or rule out other factors that could be addressed, such as any other medications that you\u2019re taking that might affect your sexual function or other underlying health conditions. Your doctor can also talk to you about reducing any other risk factors for ED that you might have.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re looking for an ED medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/safest-drug-for-erectile-dysfunction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that\u2019s safe to try<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you do have some options such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sildenafil-citrate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sildenafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an ED med that\u2019s also indicated to treat high blood pressure in the lungs, a condition better known as pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The general recommendation is to take sildenafil one hour before sexual intercourse.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tadalafil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tadalafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can also be used to treat PAH as well as the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). This medication belongs to a group of drugs known as phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors, which boost blood flow to the penis during stimulation, which can in turn facilitate an erection. It comes in tablet form and can be taken in one of two ways: daily or \u201cas needed.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vardenafil-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vardenafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is also a PDE inhibitor. It comes in tablet form and must be taken 60 minutes before the effects will be needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a614010.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avanafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which also belongs in the PDE inhibitor class of drugs. Currently, it is available under the brand name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/stendra-vs-viagra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stendra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recommended dosage amounts and the instructions for when to take the medicine will vary from drug to drug.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, just because your doctor has given you the green light to try an ED drug doesn\u2019t mean that you don\u2019t need to watch out for possible side effects. For example, think about those ED medication commercials you\u2019ve seen. You may have heard them caution that you might experience flushing of the face, headache or heartburn, among other mild side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in some cases, more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/viagra-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are possible. For example, Viagra\u2014which is a brand name for sildenafil\u2014is considered safe to try. But it\u2019s important to know that sildenafil has also been known to cause blurred vision, dizziness, a sudden loss of vision, and chest pain, as well as erections that last hours longer than they\u2019re supposed to. You don\u2019t want to ignore those symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might also need to watch out for potential drug-drug interactions. Sildenafil, for example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/138704\/sildenafil\/Drug-Interactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can interact<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a number of other meds, including some intended to treat high blood pressure, so you want to make sure your doctor is aware of all the medications that you\u2019re taking. And as Dr. Masterson notes, use of ED meds in combination with nitrates for other conditions is contraindicated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, be very cautious about anything that\u2019s not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, such as herbal supplements, says Dr. Anderson. \u201cThat\u2019s a definite buyer-beware,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some men, an oral ED medication may not be enough to restore their erections. According to the Mayo Clinic, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/erectile-dysfunction\/in-depth\/erectile-dysfunction\/art-20043927\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help them enjoy sexual activity include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injectable medication, such as alprostadil<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suppositories or pellets that can be inserted into the urethra prior to sexual activity, such as the alprostadil pellet known as MUSE (Medicated Urethral System for Erections)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vacuum device, or vacuum constriction device, which employs a pump to draw blood into the penis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penile implant or penile prosthesis, which is implanted surgically to help a man achieve an erection<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While your primary care provider may prescribe one of the oral ED meds for you, you may need to see a urologist for these other types of treatments. But a urologist can\u2019t manage your diabetes for you, so make sure you continue your relationship with your regular physician.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another possible treatment option is testosterone therapy. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urologytimes.com\/view\/long-term-testosterone-improves-erectile-function-reduces-mortality-in-men-with-hypogonadism-and-diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a recent report on a study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presented at the 2021 Sexual Medicine Society of North America Fall Scientific Meeting, long-term testosterone therapy seems to be an effective way to improve erectile function in men with Type 2 diabetes and hypogonadism.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent ED from diabetes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You do not have to resign yourself to the prospect of struggling with ED just because you have diabetes. Certain preventive measures, including a few positive lifestyle changes, may reduce your risk. Keep these strategies in mind when you resolve to improve your sexual health, as well as your overall health:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintain good control over your blood glucose levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep good control of your blood pressure, too.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/effects-of-high-cholesterol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch your cholesterol levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re overweight, try to shed a few extra pounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/smoking-cessation-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t smoke\u2014or quit smoking if you do<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019ve ever watched a football game or a baseball game on television, you\u2019ve likely seen the ads for erectile dysfunction (ED) treatments.
