Is this something you should be concerned about?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turns out, this is a medication that changes eye color. In most cases, it\u2019s not dangerous, just a disconcerting side effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes eye color changes?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The color of your eyes should stay the same your whole life\u2014from about nine months of age when babies\u2019 eye color settles, into older adulthood. However, there are a few rare circumstances that might change the hue of your irises according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trytwentytwenty.com\/pages\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diane Hilal-Campo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified ophthalmologist and founder of Twenty\/Twenty Beauty and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/med.umn.edu\/bio\/faculty-by-specialty\/huda-sheheitli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Huda Sheheitli<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye trauma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7690545\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fuchs heterochromic iridocyclitis<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viruses such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7690545\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">herpes zoster<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iris melanoma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uveitis, an inflammatory condition of the eye<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Horner\u2019s syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice a change, it\u2019s time to contact your healthcare provider. \u201cIn adults, iris color changes need to be assessed by an eye doctor,\u201d says Dr. Hilal-Campo.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications that can affect eye color<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two types of medications that affect your eye color: glaucoma eye drops and eyelash serums. These changes are usually permanent. This side effect does not happen to everyone, and the change may be very subtle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glaucoma eye drops<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glaucoma drops can change eye color. These are known as prostaglandin analogues and are used to treat people who have a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve. They work by lowering the pressure in the eye and include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/latanoprost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xalatan (latanoprost)\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bimatoprost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lumigan (bimatoprost)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zioptan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zioptan (tafluprost)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/travatan-z\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travatan Z (travoprost)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/prostaglandins\"><b>See more prostaglandins<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the potential side effects of this group of medications is the darkening of the iris. If your irises are a mix of colors such as green-brown, or blue\/gray-brown, you might have the greatest chances of your eyes darkening while using these medications. \u201cProstaglandin eye drops can cause darkening of the lighter-colored peripheral iris, resulting in a more uniformly brown color,\u201d says Dr. Sheheitli.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other side effects of these medications <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1517\/14740338.6.1.45?journalCode=ieds20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye redness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling in the macula<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Longer, thicker, and darker eyelashes\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eyelash serums<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because some glaucoma medications can cause your eyelashes to grow, they\u2019re also sold as eyelash growth serums. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/latisse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latisse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contains the same active ingredient as the glaucoma medication Lumigan: bimatoprost. Latisse is used to treat a condition called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK537100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypotrichosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where you have fewer eyelashes than usual. It can cause permanent eye color changes in some people who use it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from Latisse eye color changes, other side effects include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye irritation and itching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/eye-health-how-to-protect-vision\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry eyes<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eyelid redness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latisse is only available by prescription. You can purchase other over-the-counter (OTC) eyelash growth serums such as Aphro Celina Eyelash and Rapidlash. These also are prostaglandin analogues, but unlike <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2012\/022369s005lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latisse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they aren\u2019t approved by the FDA.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other ways to change eye color<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what if you want to purposefully change your eye color? Can you do it on your own? According to the experts, it\u2019s possible, but there are some things to consider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no safe natural remedies that will change your eye color at home, says Dr. Hilal-Campo. Attempting to do this can cause damage to your eyes\u2014and even cause blindness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe easiest and most common way to change your eye color temporarily is to wear<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact lenses,\u201d explains Dr. Sheheitli, \u201cbut color-changing contact lenses may harm your eyes if you don\u2019t use them right.\u201d For example, if the contact doesn&#8217;t fit your eye correctly it can actually scrape the outer layer of your eye, known as the cornea, and can lead to scarring. Make sure you get a prescription from a licensed professional, and avoid buying colored contacts from beauty supply companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a more permanent change, surgery is an option. There are two main types. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.keratonyc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keratopigmentation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a procedure that inserts a different pigment into your eye. Iris implant surgery inserts a prosthetic iris of a different color. It was originally used to treat eye injuries and other conditions, but according to Dr. Sheheitli, has become popular for cosmetic reasons. However, Dr. Hilal Campo warns that none of these procedures are FDA-approved. Additionally, there is a risk of serious eye complications that can occur such as vision loss, glaucoma, and inflammation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice your eyes have a different color to them after using medications, you should check in with your prescribing physician.
