Just like their human owners, cats with diabetes cannot effectively produce or respond to the hormone insulin. This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vet.cornell.edu\/departments-centers-and-institutes\/cornell-feline-health-center\/health-information\/feline-health-topics\/feline-diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causes elevated blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Diabetes in cats is a chronic condition that requires daily monitoring and treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes diabetes in cats?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few risk factors for your cat to develop diabetes. Overweight cats are four times more likely to develop diabetes than cats who are in the ideal weight range. It\u2019s also more common in older cats. Additional risk factors include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical inactivity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Male gender<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use of steroids to treat illnesses such as feline asthma or skin allergies<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, some breeds of cats in certain geographical areas are more prone to developing diabetes. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burmese in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maine Coon, Russian Blue, and Siamese in the USA\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norwegian Forest cats in Europe<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of diabetes in cats<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few signs you can watch for to identify if your cat may have diabetes. Symptoms of diabetes in cats include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss, even if the cat is eating normally, or even has an increased appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased thirst and water consumption<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased urination, either inside the litter box or as \u201caccidents\u201d outside of the litter box<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty fully straightening their back legs or limping on the back legs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes doesn\u2019t typically cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pain-relief-for-dogs-cats\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain in cats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it can make them feel unwell. If the nerves in their legs and feet are affected, it can cause mild pain and tingling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to test for diabetes in cats<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A veterinarian will look for diabetes based on clinical signs such as weight loss, urinary accidents, and appetite changes. Testing for diabetes includes checking sugar levels in the blood and urine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A test called fructosamine concentration may be run to give a more accurate overall picture than a single glucose reading. It reports an estimated average of a cat\u2019s blood glucose concentration over the past two weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your vet may also run tests to check for or rule out other conditions such as a urinary tract infection, chronic kidney disease, pancreatitis, or hyperthyroidism, which could also be causing the cat\u2019s symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat diabetes in cats<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes in cats is treated in two main ways,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/excitedcats.com\/veterinarians-dr-chyrle-bonk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chyrle Bonk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DVM, a remote veterinary consultant for excitedcats.com<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first through giving insulin and secondly through diet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats with diabetes should eat a low carbohydrate diet. There are prescription foods available for this purpose. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catvets.com\/diabetes-toolkit\/faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitten food and canned food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also tend to be higher in protein and lower in carbohydrates. However, diet may not be enough to control diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to what you feed your cat, how much and when you feed them is important too, especially if they are on insulin in addition. \u201cA diabetic cat\u2019s diet should remain essentially the same day in and day out,\u201d Dr. Coates says. \u201cSignificant dietary changes will alter the cat\u2019s need for insulin, and if the dose is not adjusted appropriately, the cat may suffer from dangerously high or low blood sugar levels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlmost all cats should receive insulin when beginning treatment,\u201d says Jennifer Coates, DVM, an advisory board member for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/petnewsdaily.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet News Daily<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThis greatly increases their chances of going into remission and not needing insulin in the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin is almost always given to cats through injection. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin injections are given under the skin, in approximately 12-hour intervals. While the ideal is to give the injections at the same time every day, there is room for a one to two hour deviation from the 12-hour mark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Types of insulin preparations used in cats include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vetsulin (l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ente insulin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ProZinc insulin (PZI)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/insulin-glargine-yfgn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glargine insulin<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NPH insulin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detemir insulin<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not hard to give most cats insulin injections,\u201d Dr. Coates says. \u201cThe needles that are used are tiny and result in very little discomfort.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choosing the right size syringe is important because different types use different syringes. Talk with your vet about which choices are right for your cat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/where-to-fill-pet-prescriptions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for feline diabetes have a low success rate and are typically only used if injection is not an option.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood sugar monitoring<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your cat is being treated with insulin, you might need to check blood sugar to make sure the dosage is correct. There are three <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catvets.com\/diabetes-toolkit\/treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different levels of monitoring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, depending on factors such as the severity of the illness and likelihood of remission. That said, with proper treatment, cats can do quite well, particularly younger cats and cats for whom the disease has not progressed significantly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe lifespan of a cat with diabetes will depend on how well the disease is managed,\u201d Dr. Bonk says. \u201cWith proper management that keeps blood sugar levels in check, cats can live a normal life and even go into diabetic remission where they will no longer require insulin shots.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice signs of diabetes in your cat such as weight loss or increased thirst and urination, book an appointment with your vet.
