{"id":47431,"date":"2021-12-01T09:30:51","date_gmt":"2021-12-01T14:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=47431"},"modified":"2023-11-21T16:02:59","modified_gmt":"2023-11-21T21:02:59","slug":"is-it-too-late-to-get-a-flu-shot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-it-too-late-to-get-a-flu-shot\/","title":{"rendered":"Is it too late to get a flu shot?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T_OVyM7YLgo?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know getting your flu shot is the best way to avoid getting the flu (aka <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/influenza-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influenza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a potentially life-threatening respiratory infection that can cause fever, a dry cough, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But September, October, and even November have already passed and you still haven\u2019t gotten your vaccine. Are you too late?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the best time to get a flu shot?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/prevent\/vaccinations.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people aged 6 months and older get an annual influenza vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s particularly important for people at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-complications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher risk of complications from the flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including young children, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-shot-while-pregnant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnant women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, older adults, and those who have chronic health conditions, such as asthma or diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the influenza virus can circulate year round, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/season\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flu cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> typically start popping up in October, peaking in December, January, February, and sometimes March, then tapering off in the spring. But because it can take two weeks for your body to build up immunity to the virus post vaccination, the CDC recommends that everyone get their flu shot by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/prevent\/keyfacts.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">end of October<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, before flu season really amps up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And getting your vaccine earlier than September or October isn\u2019t always better. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28039340\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that the flu vaccine\u2019s effectiveness can wane by 6%\u201311% per month post-vaccine. An adult who gets an early vaccination\u2014say, in July or August\u2014may not have enough immunity left to fend off the flu later in the season. An exception to the early rule: Children getting their very first flu shot. Because it\u2019s a two-shot series with the second shot being given four weeks after the first, it\u2019s recommended that these children get their first jab as soon as the vaccine becomes available, even if it\u2019s July or August. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/season\/faq-flu-season-2022-2023.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early vaccination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also be considered for expectant mothers in their third trimester to help protect babies in their first few months of life when they are too young to receive the vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far this year, only 19% of Americans have received their flu vaccine, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/flu-shot-survey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while another 36% intend to do so at some point. Overall, the number of people who have gotten or plan to get a flu shot is down about 3% from last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while a third of people in our SingleCare survey think <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/reasons-not-to-get-the-flu-shot\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the flu shot isn\u2019t effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in preventing a flu infection, that just isn\u2019t the case. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/vaccines-work\/vaccineeffect.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that in 2020, the flu vaccine helped prevent some 7.5 million flu illnesses, 3.7 million medical visits, 105,000 influenza hospitalizations, and 6,300 flu-associated deaths. In years when the vaccine is well matched to circulating strains, it can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/vaccines-work\/vaccineeffect.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce flu illnesses by up to 60%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even if you do get the flu despite vaccination, your chances of being hospitalized with a flu infection or dying from the virus are substantially lower than someone who isn\u2019t vaccinated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it too late to get a flu shot?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As long as the flu virus is circulating\u2014and that can be well into the spring\u2014experts say it\u2019s not too late to get a flu shot. \u201cWhatever protection you can get, even from a shot late in the season, is better than no protection,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/profile\/194560-julia-rachel-blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julia Blank, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a family medicine physician at Providence Saint John\u2019s Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Determining how long and aggressive a flu season will be isn\u2019t an exact science. While the flu usually peaks in fall and winter, there have been times flu activity has stretched into May and beyond. In fact, between May and late September of 2019, the CDC reported <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/68\/wr\/mm6840a3.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,700 positive cases of flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe rates of flu can sometimes be higher toward the end of the season,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaljewish.org\/doctors-departments\/providers\/physicians\/charles-l-daley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charles Daley, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pulmonologist and chief of mycobacterial and respiratory infections at National Jewish Health in Denver. \u201cIt\u2019s worth getting vaccinated at any time during the flu season.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if I\u2019ve already been exposed?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve already been exposed to\u2014or even been sickened by\u2014the flu this season, it still pays to get a flu shot. That\u2019s because there are actually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/viruses\/types.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiple flu strains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/influenza-a-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Influenza A<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/influenza-a-vs-influenza-b\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accounting for most cases of seasonal flu in this country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So although you may have been exposed to or even gotten sick and recovered from one strain of flu, without a flu shot, your body won\u2019t have the antibodies to protect you from other circulating strains. \u201cGetting sick from one strain doesn\u2019t protect you from getting sick with another one,\u201d emphasizes Dr. Blank.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not get the flu shot?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flu vaccine is considered safe and effective for most people, but there are certain people who should not receive certain kinds of flu vaccines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a high-dose inactivated vaccine is only approved for use in those 65 and older. Those older than 2 and younger than 50 are the only groups approved to take the nasal spray vaccine (and even then, certain groups\u2014such as pregnant women or those who are immunocompromised\u2014should not receive this type of vaccine). Your healthcare provider can advise about which vaccine is the safest and most effective for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And there\u2019s also a small subset of people who should not receive any flu vaccine at all. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/prevent\/whoshouldvax.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these people include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babies younger than 6 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have a severe allergy to any ingredient in the vaccine\u2014for example, gelatin, antibiotics, or other ingredients.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/can-you-get-a-flu-shot-if-youre-allergic-to-eggs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">egg allergy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (certain flu vaccines contain a small amount of egg protein) or you\u2019ve had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/news\/feature-article-guillain-barr-syndrome-gbs-vaccines-risks-and-recommendations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guillain-Barre Syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a rare disorder, linked to some vaccines, in which your immune system attacks nerves), get medical advice from your doctor before receiving a flu vaccine. Depending on your particular situation, your doctor may decide that receiving the vaccine outweighs any potential risks. You might also need to get the vaccine in a healthcare setting, so you can be closely observed by medical personnel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You also may need to wait to get a flu vaccine if you\u2019re sick with anything other than a mild illness (think the common cold or sinus or ear infection) or you have a mild-to-moderate fever. \u201cIn part, this is because people with fevers are usually excluded from vaccine studies, so we don\u2019t know how the vaccine may affect them and whether it will be as effective,\u201d Dr. Daley says. \u201cWe don\u2019t know if the antibody response will be as robust if someone\u2019s immune system is trying to develop antibodies to fight off the current infection. The CDC recommends waiting if you have a fever greater than 101 degrees F or if you are very ill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about getting the COVID-19 vaccine or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/covid-booster-shot\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">booster shot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along with the flu vaccine? Experts say that\u2019s completely fine. \u201cA recent study from the U.K. showed that getting a flu shot with a COVID vaccine did not affect antibody response,\u201d Dr. Daley says. \u201cSo, there is no reason to wait. However, if someone is getting their first COVID vaccine, I would recommend that they wait a couple of weeks before getting the flu shot so that if they develop a COVID vaccine reaction, it\u2019s clear which vaccine is causing it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-shot-reactions\/\"><b>What are the most common flu shot side effects?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where are flu shots available?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During flu season, flu vaccines are available in a number of places:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharmacies, including those within grocery and big-box stores (some will even give you a store gift card for getting the shot)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctor\u2019s office<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urgent care center<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student health clinic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local health department<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some schools and workplaces also sponsor flu shot events on their premises. The CDC also has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccines.gov\/find-vaccines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccine finder website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you can use to find both influenza and coronavirus vaccines in your area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on your insurance coverage, your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/discounted-free-flu-shots\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flu shot may be free or discounted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you do have to pay full price for a flu shot, it\u2019s apt to run you $30 to $40.
