It wasn&#8217;t until 2006 that Medicare began covering a portion of most prescription drugs, including insulin, for Medicare beneficiaries diagnosed with diabetes. Prior to that, Medicare generally only paid for prescription drugs that were administered in a physician\u2019s office or in a hospital or skilled nursing facility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, Medicare tested a new insulin savings program for Part D plans called the Senior Savings Model. The new program offered insulin coverage at no more than $35 per month for Medicare Part D consumers with diabetes. The program ended on Dec. 31, 2023; however, the Inflation Reduction Act kept insulin copays at $35 or less for Medicare beneficiaries in 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"medicare-insulin-coverage-which-plan-do-you-need\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare insulin coverage: Which plan do you need?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-parts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four parts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Part A, B, C, and D. People who use an insulin pump will need Part B for insulin coverage; people who take other forms of insulin will need Part D for coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"medicare-part-b-coverage-for-diabetes-supplies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part B coverage for diabetes supplies<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-medicare-part-b\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part B<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> covers insulin if you use an insulin pump that\u2019s considered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/coverage\/insulin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durable Medical Equipment (DME)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you use an insulin pump that isn\u2019t disposable, Part B may cover the pump as well as the insulin used with the pump.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part B doesn\u2019t cover insulin pens or insulin-related supplies such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Syringes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol swabs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gauze<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"medicare-part-d-coverage-for-diabetes-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D coverage for diabetes medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Medicare coverage of insulin, you\u2019ll need to enroll in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-medicare-part-d\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D prescription drug plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or be enrolled in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-medicare-advantage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with prescription coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the most popular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/insulins\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">types of insulins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are covered under Part D plans, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lantus\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levemir\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levemir<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/novolog\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novolog<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/humalog\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humalog<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral diabetes drugs are also included under Medicare Part D coverage, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sulfonylureas\/\"><b>Sulfonylureas<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Glipizide, glyburide<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/biguanides\/\"><b>Biguanides<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Metformin<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/thiazolidinediones\/\"><b>Thiazolidinediones<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pioglitazone<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/meglitinides\"><b>Meglitinides<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nateglinide, repaglinide<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Alpha-glucosidase<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/alpha-glucosidase-inhibitors\"><b> inhibitors<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acarbose, miglitol<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/glp-1-agonists\/\"><b>Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Adlyxin, Byetta, Bydureon, Ozempic, Tanzeum, Trulicity, Victoza<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sglt2-inhibitors\/\"><b>Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT-2 inhibitors)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Farxiga, Invokana, Jardiance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order for these medications to be covered by Medicare Part D plans, the insulin must be prescribed by a medical provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-medicare-pay-for-insulin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Medicare pay for insulin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From January 2021 through December 2023, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/part-d-senior-savings-model\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part D Senior Savings Model<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helped Medicare beneficiaries pay a maximum of $35 for a 30-day insulin supply. This program ended on Dec. 31, 2023; however, the Inflation Reduction Act kept insulin prices capped at $35 for Medicare beneficiaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The total cost of your insulin, insulin pens, and insulin pumps depends on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/files\/document\/faqs-medicare-insulin-cost-sharing.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your Medicare coverage and any supplemental coverage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The type of insulin you&#8217;re using (brand name versus generic)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much of the medication you use each month or year<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether your Medicare drug plan requires a coinsurance or copayment for this medication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your income level and the state you live in<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pharmacy you use to fill prescriptions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"other-costs-to-consider\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other costs to consider<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to paying $35 for your 30-day insulin supply, you may be responsible for Part B and D premiums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2026, most people who are enrolled in Medicare Part B will pay a premium of $202.90 per month, compared with $185 per month in 2025. However, if your income is above a certain threshold, you may have to pay more than that amount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People on Part D will pay varying premiums, but the national base premium is $38.99 per month in 2026, compared with $36.78 per month in 2025. Part D premiums may be higher for people with higher incomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, Medicare beneficiaries do not have to meet their Part B or Part D deductible before reaping the benefits of the $35 or less copay for insulin. However, deductibles and normal cost-sharing structures still apply to diabetes-related products such as insulin pumps, test strips, and oral diabetes medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-afford-insulin-on-medicare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to afford insulin on Medicare<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from the Medicare plans, there are additional coverage options that may be available to you, including assistance programs and enrollment in a Medicare supplement insurance plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/resources\/diabetes\"><b>Diabetes Coupons &amp; Discount Diabetic Supplies<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"assistance-programs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assistance programs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Medicare recipients have the option to enroll in programs that may help reduce or eliminate certain drug costs. Insulin costs, additional hospital days, and preventive services may be included.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/coverage\/medicare-diabetes-prevention-program\"><b>Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is a six-month program designed to provide realistic strategies and support for Medicare Type 2 diabetes patients. The program offers weekly group sessions with a trained coach and post-program support sessions. While participation doesn&#8217;t directly affect the costs of your diabetes supplies, it may help you learn ways to manage your diabetes better. Healthy lifestyle changes can reduce the effects of diabetes, prevent further health complications, and decrease diabetes supply costs over time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"manufacturer-rebates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manufacturer rebates<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way to save money on your medications is by using manufacturer rebates and coupons. These can lower or eliminate the costs of your medication copayments, yearly limits, and deductibles. Some patients may even qualify for free insulin pens. The eligibility criteria vary by program. Contact the manufacturer of your insulin to find out what savings options they offer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"free-trials-or-samples\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free trials or samples<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many insulin manufacturers offer free trials or free supplies of their medications. These programs are intended to help you find which medicine works best for you, but they may also help lower your costs over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes doctor\u2019s offices also have free samples they can provide to get you started on a new medication, help you switch to a new medication, or if you can\u2019t get immediate access to your insulin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"patient-assistance-programs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patient assistance programs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patient assistance programs offer free or discounted medications to those with financial difficulties. Drug manufacturers and nonprofit organizations offer these programs. Eligibility is based on a variety of factors, including income level, medical insurance status, and residence location.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to apply for most patient assistance programs, you must have an annual income <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6686767\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than or equal to 500% of the federal poverty limit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, this is not a steadfast rule. Many programs have higher or lower limits depending on your family size. The federal government has also been considering reducing discounts given to those with incomes as high as 400% of the federal poverty limit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applying for these programs can be time-consuming and frustrating, but they are worth investigating if you are struggling to afford your diabetes supplies.
