Medicare Advantage plans<\/span><\/a> are privately offered plans that bundle Medicare Part A (inpatient hospital insurance), Part B (outpatient medical insurance), and usually Part D (prescription drug coverage). If you\u2019re familiar with Medicare Part D, then you know about the Part D coverage gap, which was also known as the <\/span>\u201c<\/span>donut hole<\/span><\/a>.\u201d However, the Medicare donut hole was eliminated on Jan. 1, 2025, for both Part D and Medicare Advantage plans.<\/span><\/p>\n

What was the Medicare donut hole?<\/span><\/h2>\n

All Medicare Part D prescription drug plans used to have a coverage gap known as the \u201cdonut hole,\u201d which temporarily limited the amount of drug costs that were covered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are coverage phases for Medicare Part D beneficiaries during the calendar year determined by the federal government. <\/span><\/p>\n

Before the elimination of the donut hole, the coverage stages used to include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Initial coverage stage:<\/b> You paid the full cost of your prescriptions until you met your deductible.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Coverage kicks in:<\/b> You were responsible for copayments on your prescriptions until the combined amount both you and your plan paid for medications for the year reached $5,030.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Donut hole or coverage gap: <\/b>At this point, you would pay 25% of the cost of your prescriptions (generic drugs and brand-name drugs) until your total out-of-pocket costs for the year equaled $8,000.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Catastrophic coverage: <\/b>After reaching a total out-of-pocket cost of $8,000 on covered drugs, you paid no further cost-sharing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    As of January 2025, the new coverage phases include: deductible, initial coverage, and catastrophic coverage. Once a beneficiary spends the out-of-pocket maximum on covered drugs for the year, they go straight to catastrophic coverage and pay $0 for covered drugs for the rest of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Does the donut hole apply to Medicare Advantage?<\/span><\/h2>\n

    The Medicare donut hole was eliminated from all Medicare plans, including Advantage plans.<\/span><\/p>\n
