Surveys indicate that Americans drink twice as much during the holiday season than they do at other times, and one study says alcohol consumption peaks on Christmas Day and New Year\u2019s Eve. All that imbibing can take a physical, mental, and even a financial toll. If you\u2019ve overindulged this holiday season, you might consider a Dry January challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry January is a public health campaign in which people abstain from drinking alcohol for the first month of the year. Research is mixed about whether the challenge helps people cut back on alcohol consumption long term, but giving up booze, even temporarily, can improve your health. Participants in one Dry January challenge reported that after a month alcohol-free, they slept better, lost weight, lowered their blood pressure, and their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/fatty-liver-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver fat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decreased by 40%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlcohol affects virtually every organ in the body, and its effects depend on how much<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and for how long you drink,\u201d notes Joseph R. Volpicelli, MD, Ph.D., founder of the Volpicelli Center in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, and executive director of the Institute of Addiction Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/about-alcohol-use\/moderate-alcohol-use.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that alcohol can have harmful physical and emotional effects at lower doses than most people realize. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/about-dietary-guidelines\/related-projects\/usda-hhs-response-national-academies-sciences-engineering\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> now states that drinking may be problematic if it exceeds more than a drink a day for females and two drinks a day for males. During the pandemic, alcohol drinking increased for many Americans, and considering a Dry January can help show if you have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/volpicellicenter.com\/about-us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Volpicellii<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is at least some of that damage can be reversed when you stop drinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happens-when-you-stop-drinking-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens when you stop drinking alcohol?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If alcohol affects nearly every organ in your body, then it makes sense that quitting or limiting your intake of booze can give health rewards from head to toe. How significant those rewards are and how quickly they\u2019re felt will vary from person to person and depend on a person\u2019s genetics and how much and often they drink.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDiscontinuing unhealthy alcohol consumption will markedly improve both your short-term and long-term health,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/njms.rutgers.edu\/departments\/emergency_medicine\/about.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lewis Nelson, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Director of the Division of Medical Toxicology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To some extent, the health effects of heavy drinking can be reversed, and all of them can be slowed once alcohol consumption is ended,\u201d Dr. Nelson says. \u201cThe greatest beneficiaries are the liver, heart, and brain, but all organs, including your muscles, kidneys, and even skin, will benefit since alcohol damages nearly every cell in your body. Some of our organs are excellent at self-repair, and if damage is not irreversible, improvement can occur.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney function often remains normal despite alcohol abuse. So, abstaining from alcohol will not improve kidney function appreciably, unless kidney function is reduced due to other health issues. Muscle wasting can occur with alcohol due to decreased physical exertion and poor food choices, not actually from the alcohol intake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to remember that not everyone&#8217;s the same. Some may feel better quicker than others or have different reactions, but here is a typical timeline of what happens to your body when you stop drinking:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"first-day-without-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First day without alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on how much alcohol you regularly consume, the first day without it may be unpleasant. In the first two to 24 hours, you may experience a hangover or withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol withdrawal can cause sweating, fast heart rate, hand tremors, vomiting, retching, restlessness, anxiety, and feelings of depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy drinkers should only stop drinking under medical supervision because of the risk of delirium tremens (DTs), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a severe and potentially life-threatening withdrawal from alcohol that can result in seizures, hallucinations, and other physical symptoms that need to be monitored and treated in a controlled medical setting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"first-week-without-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First week without alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHeavy alcohol drinkers may have a week-long period of abstinence-related withdrawal, which can include anxiety, sweating, vomiting, tremor, and high heart rate, and often requires medical assistance,\u201d says Dr. Nelson. \u201cOnce this is complete, if it occurs, you will feel overall healthier, with more energy, nearly immediately.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol is a depressant. As such, after the first week of not drinking you may notice:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better sleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brighter mood<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased sex drive<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take regular medication, and that prescription\u2019s efficacy is affected by alcohol, you may notice that your underlying conditions improve when you stop drinking. That\u2019s because the medication can work more effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alcohol-and-medication\/\"><b>10 drugs you should not mix with alcohol<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"first-month-without-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First month without alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/broadcast\/read\/47131\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in first four weeks after you quit drinking you may notice:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved concentration<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better-looking skin (Alcohol use can disrupt sleep, cause dehydration, and make you more prone to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34785005\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skin conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/rosacea-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rosacea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/psoriasis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psoriasis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, all of which affect the appearance of your skin.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased energy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible weight loss (A 5 oz. glass of wine is close to150 calories; a mixed drink can be\u00a0 200 calories or more, depending on the spirit, the mixer, and the size of the pour.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More self-esteem\u2014gaining control over an addictive substance like alcohol is no small feat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood pressure and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspenridgerecoverycenters.com\/abstain-from-alcohol-to-repair-liver\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver function<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will return to normal after 30 days for most people.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"several-months-without-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several months without alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of the benefits of the first month continue, and even improve. More severe health impacts, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanaddictioncenters.org\/health-complications-addiction\/reverse-alcohol-damage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart arrhythmias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, may return to normal. First, there\u2019s the price, which varies based on what you drink and where you buy it. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cesan.nr0.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that Americans spent an average of $478 on alcohol in 2020. In fact, many people will need to use a combination of methods to successfully quit drinking. Your first step should be talking to your healthcare provider. Your physician can give you tips for success, lead you to a substance-abuse treatment program if they feel that\u2019s appropriate, and let you know if it\u2019s safe to take a cold-turkey approach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"find-alcohol-rehab-support\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find alcohol rehab support<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA daily, excessive drinker is probably someone who is going to need a medical detox,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonmethodist.org\/doctor\/james-flack\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Flack, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, deputy chair of psychiatry at Houston Methodist Hospital. How do you know if you\u2019re an excessive drinker? You need to consider more than just the quantity and frequency of your alcohol intake. You need to consider your alcohol dependence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s important to examine how strong your urge to drink is and what happens when you try to quit,\u201d cautions <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theohanahawaii.com\/team\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael J. McGrath, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a psychiatrist and medical director of Ohana Addiction Treatment Center in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. \u201cIf stopping results in [alcohol withdrawal symptoms]\u00a0 like nausea, vomiting, trouble sleeping, then it\u2019s imperative to get help from a professional.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/find-help\/national-helpline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SAMHSA) runs a free, confidential, 24\/7 hotline (1-800-662-HELP). They can put you in touch with treatment centers, support groups, and community-based organizations. It can also provide you with some general information on substance use and alcohol addiction. Your healthcare provider and local hospital can also steer you toward help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"medication-to-stop-drinking\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication to stop drinking<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your doctor may also talk to you about the use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-help-alcohol-use-disorder\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications to help you quit drinking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These drugs are designed to help those who have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/3909-alcoholism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol use disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AUD, defined as a medical condition in which people cannot control their drinking even when it causes physical and emotional harm). Some of the medication for alcoholism most commonly used include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>ReVia, Vivitrol (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/naltrexone-hcl\"><b>naltrexone<\/b><\/a><b>): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an opioid antagonist, which comes in an oral and extended-release injectable form. It helps to reduce cravings for alcohol and reduce the number of drinking days. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25664494\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, naltrexone was shown to significantly reduce the risk of people with AUD relapsing after three months of the drug\u2019s use. The most common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/naltrexone-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with naltrexone use is nausea. Naltrexone <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should be avoided in people using opioids or in those with acute hepatitis or hepatic failure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Campral (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acamprosate-calcium\"><b>acamprosate<\/b><\/a><b>):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is another drug that helps to reduce alcohol cravings and prevent relapses. It\u2019s meant to be used in tandem with counseling. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/afp\/2006\/0815\/p645.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that those taking acamprosate were twice as successful staying abstinent for one year as those taking a placebo. Campral cannot be used in those with severe kidney dysfunction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Topamax (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/topiramate\"><b>topiramate<\/b><\/a><b>):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is an anticonvulsant medication that is also effective in treating AUD (although it isn\u2019t Food and Drug Administration approved to treat the disorder). Create an arsenal of other coping mechanisms: It could be taking a walk, talking to a friend, deep breathing, or snuggling with your pet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Get support. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol is addictive and many people need assistance to quit successfully.
