Per the National Institutes of Health, many chronic diseases, such as obesity, heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes, are often <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/nih-research-matters\/how-dietary-factors-influence-disease-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the result of poor nutrition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Improving your diet has the potential to reduce or reverse some of the negative effects of these conditions. But what about thyroid disease\u2026 can changing your diet alter your thyroid function? In the case of hypothyroidism, a.k.a. underactive thyroid, the answer is both yes and no.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHypothyroidism is mostly controlled by medications\u2014there\u2019s no \u2018hypothyroid diet,\u2019\u201d says University of Missouri Health Care clinical dietitian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/krystle-wattenbarger-rdn-ld-cdces-8a530b193\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Krystle Wattenbarger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, RDN. \u201cBut it\u2019s still important to eat a generally healthful diet, consuming five to nine servings of fruits and veggies and getting some plant-based fats in there, too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypothyroidism-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothyroidism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the result of lower-than-average thyroid function (as opposed to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hypothyroidism-vs-hyperthyroidism\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyper<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroidism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is overactive function). With hypothyroid, your thyroid doesn\u2019t produce enough hormones to regulate many important body systems. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/hypothyroidism\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20350284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this often results in people feeling tired or sluggish, being sensitive to cold, having dry skin or constipation, and gaining weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Wattenbarger explained, the primary treatment is medication\u2014but that doesn\u2019t mean your diet is totally unrelated to your treatment, either. Here\u2019s everything you need to know about eating healthfully for hypothyroidism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the best hypothyroidism diet?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no singular best diet for hypothyroidism that works best for people with hypothyroidism! But, eating a healthy diet can help you feel better overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are no specific diets that are proven to be good for hypothyroidism,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdmercy.com\/centers-of-excellence\/additional-centers\/endocrinology-bone-diabetes-thyroid\/our-doctors\/kristian-morey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristian Morey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, RD, LDN, a clinical dietitian with the Nutrition and Diabetes Education program at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. \u201cIn most cases, diets that include a wide variety of lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables provide a wide range of nutrients beneficial to those with or without hypothyroidism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our wellness newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Wellness Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many people, this might mean adopting a diet that can be categorized more as a lifestyle change versus a \u201cfad\u201d or trend diet. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/nutrition-basics\/mediterranean-diet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mediterranean Diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, is a style of eating that doesn\u2019t force you to cut out any food groups, count calories, or eat excessive amounts of certain types of foods (like fats or proteins). It simply emphasizes lean protein over red meat, whole grains over simple carbohydrates, lots and lots of fresh produce, and plenty of those plant-based fats Wattenbarger referred to earlier, like nuts, seeds, and olive oil.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DASH diet, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/dash-diet\/art-20048456\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is similar: low in sodium and saturated fat, the diet focuses on everyday foods rich in potassium, magnesium, and calcium to keep blood pressure levels naturally lower and improve cardiovascular function.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These two diets allow you to make overall healthy choices throughout the day without too much restriction, something that is key to making lasting nutrition changes for your health. \u201cRestrictive diets are very hard to stick to long term, and anything involving the endocrine system is a long-term, lifelong complication,\u201d Wattenbarger says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the worst hypothyroidism diet?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding restrictive diets means no matter how tempting a new dietary fad may be\u2014with claims that you can drop 40 or 50 pounds in a handful of months!\u2014they usually aren\u2019t the best choice if you have hypothyroidism, especially if they involve restricting entire food groups. On top of being hard to maintain in the long run, they could have acute health effects, as well. \u201cI often recommend avoiding diets that cut out whole food groups, such as keto or vegan diets, because this can make it more difficult to get crucial nutrients,\u201d says Morey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wattenbarger agrees, emphasizing that hypothyroidism is something that happens metabolically within your organs, not something caused by diet. This is often confusing for people, since thyroid medications are most commonly weight-based; in other words, weight loss means you\u2019ll likely need less thyroid medication, so people losing weight quickly on restrictive diets (and needing less medication) sometimes think the diet is \u201ccuring\u201d their thyroid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI see a lot of people who read on the internet that keto or the Atkins diet will cure hypo, but that\u2019s not the case,\u201d Wattenbarger says. \u201cYou might lose weight with a fad diet and reduce your medication needs, but that\u2019s not a longevity route\u2014you need something you can adopt permanently and that your whole family can do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 foods for hypothyroidism<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whole foods, like lean meats, fresh fruits and veggies, legumes, nuts, and olive oil, and moderate amounts of dairy products, eggs, and complex carbohydrates, are the best types of food to eat if you have hypothyroidism. That said, a few foods are particularly good to include in your hypothyroidism diet plan because they\u2019re rich in some key thyroid-benefitting nutrients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Nuts and legumes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nuts and legumes are high in selenium, which Morey says can affect the activation of thyroid hormones. Brazil nuts, in particular, contain exceptionally high levels of selenium: nearly 1,000% of the daily recommended value (DV) in just one ounce, per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Selenium-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institutes of Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Eggs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eggs contain both selenium and iodine, both of which can improve overall thyroid function. One large hard-boiled contains 27% of your DV of selenium and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Iodine-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17% of your DV of iodine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Tuna and sardines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just below Brazil nuts on the list of foods naturally high in selenium are tuna and sardines, which contain 167% and 82%, respectively of the nutrient\u2019s DV. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5307254\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 review of studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Journal of Endocrinology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> asserts that maintaining appropriate levels of selenium is critical to treating and preventing thyroid disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Oysters<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zinc is also an important nutrient in managing thyroid conditions, says Morey: \u201cZinc helps the body produce thyroid hormones [and while] zinc deficiencies are rare, people with hypothyroidism may still want to eat foods rich in zinc, like oysters and other shellfish.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oysters, in fact, are at the top of the nutritional list when it comes to zinc, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Zinc-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one serving providing 673% of the DV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Alaska king crab and lobster follow closely behind).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Chicken<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In line with the Mediterranean style of eating, Morey recommends opting for lean protein meat sources like chicken over beef and pork\u2014and this has the added benefit of giving you a good dose of zinc, too, as three ounces of dark meat chicken contains 22% of the DV of zinc. White meat has less zinc, but is still part of a healthy thyroid diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 foods to avoid with hypothyroidism<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than focusing on cutting out any particular foods, Morey suggests considering eating a few specific foods in moderation only since they contain goitrogens (which is just a fancy word for foods that can interfere with thyroid function when consumed in high quantities).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Soy-based foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s possible that foods containing soy, such as tofu, soy milk, and edamame, can interfere with the way your body absorbs thyroid medication, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/hypothyroidism\/expert-answers\/hyperthyroidism\/faq-20058188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You don\u2019t have to avoid soy-based foods entirely, but it\u2019s smart to eat them in moderation and wait several hours after taking your medication to enjoy these foods.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Cruciferous and leafy green vegetables<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, you should eat your fresh veggies if you have hypothyroidism! But try to avoid chowing down excessively on cabbage, broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and spinach, per Morey. These veggies tend to be higher in goitrogens than their veggie counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t cut them out completely, though: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nm.org\/healthbeat\/healthy-tips\/nutrition\/myths-about-diet-and-thyroid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northwestern Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says it\u2019s a myth that people with hypothyroidism should avoid cruciferous vegetables, spinach, and kale, since you would have to eat unusually high amounts of these foods to have any negative side effects on your thyroid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morey says the good news is that high amounts of goitrogens only seem to be an issue for people who have an iodine deficiency (which is uncommon in the U.S., but more on that in a minute!). She adds that their effect on thyroid function can typically be further reduced by cooking these foods thoroughly before eating them, as opposed to eating them raw or undercooked.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Millet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some studies, millet has been shown to reduce thyroid function, even when people <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eat it excessively or aren\u2019t already deficient in other nutrients, like iodine. A 2020 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudanese Journal of Paediatrics<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study, for example, notes that in areas where millet is a common food source, such as Africa and Asia, there are more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7282437\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endemic cases of goiter, or neck swelling related to the thyroid gland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Caffeinated and alcoholic beverages<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morey says coffee, green tea, and alcohol can irritate your thyroid gland, so it\u2019s best to consume these in moderation rather than all day, every day. Caffeinated beverages may interfere with the absorption of your thyroid medication, though that\u2019s not totally definitive; most of that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/6104718\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research dates back to the \u201880s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But alcohol can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3743356\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suppress your thyroid function<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, decreasing the amount of thyroid hormones, especially with chronic use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Gluten<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people with hypothyroidism are at an increased risk of developing celiac disease. People with thyroid-related autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondceliac.org\/celiac-disease\/related-conditions\/thyroid-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four times more likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to develop celiac disease than the general population. Although it\u2019s unclear whether gluten-free diets are helpful for thyroid disease, it is important to limit or eliminate gluten if you have also been diagnosed with celiac disease. There is not enough evidence that a gluten-free diet will help improve thyroid function.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The iodine debate<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some proponents of iodine-heavy diets for people with thyroid dysfunction, but Wattenbarger generally advises against adding in tons of extra iodine: \u201cIt\u2019s only relevant if the person is iodine deficient [and] here in the U.S., we typically are not.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/salt-good-or-bad-for-you\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">table salt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is iodized, it\u2019s very rare to come across a person who is truly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/iodine-deficiency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iodine deficient<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and you can do more harm than good by adding it into your diet if you don\u2019t actually need it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour body is designed to protect itself, and while your body is capable of filtering out some of these minerals and nutrients in excess amounts, some of them, like iodine, your body holds onto,\u201d Wattenbarger explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are actually iodine deficient or you feel you need just a little extra boost, you can eat a moderate amount of foods that tend to be higher in iodine, like beans, eggs, seaweed, and kale. You can also make sure the salt you use for cooking and baking is iodized table salt, says Morey, as opposed to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/mayo-clinic-q-and-a-sea-salt-and-sufficient-iodine-intake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sea salt, which doesn\u2019t have iodine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Not sure if you have an iodine deficiency? Your provider can check your iodine levels with a urine test, blood test, iodine patch skin test, or iodine loading test before taking iodine supplements. However, iodine deficiency is rare and is seldom checked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does fasting help hypothyroidism?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, says Morey, there\u2019s not enough evidence to suggest that fasting can help hypothyroidism. In fact, there are studies that suggest some people experience lower thyroid function while fasting, which obviously isn\u2019t ideal for anyone with an underactive thyroid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a 2014 study in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25285290\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower in statistically significant ways after fasting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.endocrine-abstracts.org\/ea\/0070\/ea0070aep903\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effect seems to be temporary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, per another study published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endocrine Abstracts<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2020, but the effects of fasting on the thyroid appear to be negative for people with hypothyroidism, further lowering the production of thyroid hormones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other ways to heal the thyroid<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While medication is the primary treatment for hypothyroidism, implementing other lifestyle changes alongside medication can go a long way toward reducing your symptoms and improving your quality of life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not accurate to say that you can \u201cheal\u201d or \u201ccure\u201d hypothyroidism, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nm.org\/doctors\/1235426230\/Disha-Narang-MD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disha Narang, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an endocrinologist at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital: \u201cThe majority of people diagnosed with hypothyroidism have Hashimoto&#8217;s disease, [which] is autoimmune in nature and usually is not reversible.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, some root causes of thyroid problems (like Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis and Graves\u2019 disease) can be treated well enough to restore thyroid function back to normal levels, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyroid.org\/patient-thyroid-information\/what-are-thyroid-problems\/q-and-a-can-thyroid-disease-be-cured\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Thyroid Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even though the diseases themselves can\u2019t be cured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re looking for ways to help heal your thyroid and encourage a return to normal function, here are some ways to tackle thyroid health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Exercise<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting regular physical activity is important for everyone, but it can contribute to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hypothyroidism-and-exercise\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">positive cycle of healthy behaviors in people with hypothyroid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says Wattenbarger: \u201cWhen people start eating healthier and doing more activity, people start losing weight, and as a side effect of [being more active and losing weight], they tend to eat better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, people with hypothyroidism should aim to get <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/uncontrolled-thyroid-exercise-diet-risks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">150 to 300 minutes of physical activity each week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the Cleveland Clinic. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwidejournals.com\/indian-journal-of-applied-research-(IJAR)\/file.php?val=July_2014_1404224915__165.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian Journal of Applied Research<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that even moderate exercise, like yoga, can be beneficial.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Take medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only proven effective treatment for hypothyroidism is medication. Most people with hypothyroid will be prescribed a medication like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/synthroid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synthroid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (levothyroxine) to improve their thyroid function.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe treat hypothyroidism with exogenous thyroid hormone, which in the generic form is called levothyroxine,\u201d Dr. Narang explains. \u201cOnce treatment is started, we monitor thyroid levels with blood draws every few months.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But make sure to talk to your doctor about the optimal timing for you to take this medication; unfortunately, dosing can be a little tricky. \u201c[You should] take levothyroxine alone, first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, about 45 to 60 minutes before a meal,\u201d Dr. Narang says. \u201cMedications, supplements, and foods we recommend avoiding taking with levothyroxine include calcium (supplements or a serving of dairy), iron, or soy products, as these may prevent the proper absorption of your medication.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re unsure at all if anything in your normal diet or your medication or supplement routine is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/thyroid-medication-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compatible with your thyroid medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, don\u2019t hesitate to ask your doctor about how best to time your dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Ask your provider about supplements<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the most part, both Wattenbarger and Morey say that an extensive list of supplements just isn\u2019t necessary for treating hypothyroidism. \u201cI generally recommend avoiding supplementation in specific nutrients like iodine, zinc, and selenium unless directed by a healthcare professional,\u201d says Morey. \u201cSupplements contain large amounts of these minerals, and consuming too much of them can lead to gastrointestinal problems in mild cases and more serious problems, such as deficiency in other nutrients and heart and kidney failure, in extreme cases.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want to consider asking your doctor about a multivitamin, says Wattenbarger, especially if you know you don\u2019t have the best diet or if you\u2019re on a vegan diet that is likely to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/common-nutrient-deficiencies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coming up short on key nutrients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Remember, you should wait <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.synthroid.com\/starting\/taking-synthroid-the-right-way\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least four hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between taking your thyroid hormone replacement medication and a multivitamin or any supplements that contain iron, aluminum, and calcium.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Don\u2019t ignore the warning signs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a good idea to meet with an endocrine specialist early on in your diagnosis, or if you suspect you might have hypothyroidism, to assess your thyroid function and come up with a treatment plan to bring your thyroid hormones to appropriate levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t have an endocrinologist, you can make an appointment with your primary care provider (who can then help you with a referral to a specialist). Per <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rush.edu\/news\/signs-thyroid-trouble\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rush University System for Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s a good idea to see your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms of hypothyroidism:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive fatigue or low energy levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia, depression, or mood swings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudden weight gain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in bowel movements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes to your menstruation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extreme sensitivity to cold temperatures<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Narang adds that dry skin and brittle nails, hair loss, muscle aches or weakness, and enlargement of the thyroid are also common symptoms that should prompt you to seek out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tsh-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testing of your thyroid hormone levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothyroidism is a treatable condition, but it must be controlled by medication under the supervision of a doctor.
