Like these better-known <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/analgesics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain relievers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celecoxib<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reduces pain and swelling by shutting down the body\u2019s ability to produce <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/prostaglandins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prostaglandins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a substance critical to the body\u2019s inflammatory process. NSAIDs do this by blocking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11566042\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, enzymes that produce prostaglandins. COX-1 activates platelets and protects the stomach lining, so OTC NSAIDs commonly increase the risk of bleeding and stomach pain. However, Celecoxib is specifically a COX-2 inhibitor. This means that it can do its job of reducing pain and swelling without as many gastrointestinal or bleeding side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Celebrex can cause more <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than OTC NSAIDs. reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"allergic-reactions\">Celebrex allergy<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People have had serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including worsening of asthma, airway closure, anaphylaxis, and severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skin reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some of these reactions have been fatal. The exact incidence is undetermined, but <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professionals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consider them to be rare. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Celebrex-celecoxib-532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 14 clinical studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the incidence of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between people given <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celecoxib<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and people taking a placebo pill was the same (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.karger.com\/Article\/Pdf\/51569\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), so it\u2019s hard to determine how likely these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celecoxib<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a particular structure in its molecule called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfonamide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ajhp\/article-abstract\/70\/17\/1483\/5112341\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3% to 6%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people are allergic to antibiotics containing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfonamide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their molecules, known as \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drugs.\u201d In the same clinical trials, people with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drug allergies were more likely to have allergic-type reactions to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celecoxib<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, scientists are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/nejmoa022963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unsure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if that means that people with sulfa allergies are also allergic to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celecoxib<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the catastrophic nature of hypersensitivity reactions, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has chosen a \u201cbetter safe than sorry\u201d approach to prescribing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celecoxib<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should never be prescribed to people with a history of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, aspirin or aspirin-like drugs (salicylates), or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfonamide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drugs as well as people with aspirin-sensitive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/asthma-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should know the warning signs of an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Immediately stop taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and talk to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if any symptoms of an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are noticed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"heart-attack\">Celebrex and heart attack<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there was a rumor that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was taken off the market by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is actually the only FDA-approved COX-2 inhibitor on the market. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2013\/08\/02\/2013-18657\/pfizer-inc-withdrawal-of-approval-of-a-new-drug-application-for-bextra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">removed a similar <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COX-2 inhibitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the market called Bextra (valdecoxib) and Merck <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/vioxx-rofecoxib-questions-and-answers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voluntarily withdrew its selective <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COX-2 inhibitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Vioxx (rofecoxib). The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires all prescription <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to include a black box warning about the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and adverse <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> events when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All prescription <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increase the risk for blood clots forming in the heart or blood vessels around the heart, potentially leading to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or stroke. The risk is greatest in people who have recently experienced a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is not clear if <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can increase these problems more than other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unfortunately, the available evidence is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Celebrex-celecoxib-532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insufficient<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to determine if one prescription <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAID<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is more hazardous than another in this regard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-side-effects-last\">How long do side effects last?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> go away when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is discontinued. However, with a half-life of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=8d52185d-421f-4e34-8db7-f7676db2a226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stays in the body longer than other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It could take one or two days for common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like headache, stomach upset, diarrhea, and fever to clear up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/ulcer-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peptic ulcers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastrointestinal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bleeding, and severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may take days or weeks to improve, even with medical treatment. Extremely rare but catastrophic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stroke, or aseptic meningitis could have lifelong complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\">Celebrex contraindications &amp; warnings<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) does not consider <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celecoxib<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be a drug with the potential for abuse or physical dependence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An overdose of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will require immediate medical help. Taking more <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than prescribed increases the risk for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some may require a dose reduction, but most will require close monitoring for problems.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Liver problems<\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celecoxib<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is broken down by the liver. People with moderate hepatic impairment should take half of a regular dose.
