Intermittent fasting involves switching between periods of eating and not eating on a regular schedule. There are two<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different ways to practice intermittent fasting<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: alternate-day fasting and time-restricted feeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. During the periods that you eat, you can eat however much you want, though you should ensure that you are getting complete nutrition by eating a balanced, healthy diet and prioritizing proper hydration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, many wonder: Is intermittent fasting safe? After all, there may be long periods of time when you aren\u2019t taking in calories, and it\u2019s understandable to be uncertain if that\u2019s dangerous\u2014especially if you have underlying health conditions or other risk factors. Here, learn how to decide whether intermittent fasting is a good choice for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-intermittent-fasting-safe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is intermittent fasting safe?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The consensus among health professionals is that intermittent fasting is safe for most people. It\u2019s proven that intermittent fasting works, at least in the short term. Numerous<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown that intermittent fasting is effective at helping people lose weight. The health <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefits of intermittent fasting<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include reducing cholesterol, preventing obesity, lowering blood pressure, and even improving memory. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mechanisms by which intermittent fasting affect health are not completely understood, but may include improved insulin sensitivity and anti-inflammatory effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are certain considerations\u2014fasting duration, potential side effects, and what to eat when you\u2019re not fasting. Like any new eating plan, you should check with your healthcare provider before getting started.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"duration\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duration<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most popular fasting plans are the daily approach (where you eat during an eight-hour window and fast for 16) and the 5:2 method, which involves eating normally for five days of the week, and fasting for the remaining two. Though some plans suggest fasting for longer periods such as 48 or 72 hours, most experts do not recommend it. Because of the risks of side effects of intermittent fasting like reduced energy and fluid intake, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristin Gillespie, MS, RD, an advisor for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/exercisewithstyle.com\/meet-the-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercisewithstyle.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, doesn\u2019t recommend fasts lasting more than 24 hours. The risks of extended fasts (more than 24 hours) increase while the benefits do not.\u00a0 Extended fasts can actually put your body into starvation mode, which causes the body to store more fat instead of burning it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, most of the research about intermittent fasting looks at short-term safety and benefits and doesn\u2019t take into account what can happen if you practice fasting for months or years. \u201cUntil more research is available, I would recommend intermittent fasting for short-term periods of up to two months,\u201d Gillespie says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you begin intermittent fasting, it may result in some unwanted<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/4-intermittent-fasting-side-effects-to-watch-out-for\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSome people experience headaches, irritability, low energy, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-blood-glucose-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Melissa Mitri, MS, a registered dietician for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellnessverge.com\/author\/melissa-mitri-ms-rd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellness Verge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You may also need to alter your intermittent fasting routine if you become ill, need a medical procedure performed, or need lab work done, Tamayo advises.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"people-with-kidney-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with kidney disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also concerns for people<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ckj\/article\/14\/6\/1524\/6129102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who live with kidney disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cLonger fasts can potentially increase the risk of kidney damage in those that already have kidney disease,\u201d says Mitri. \u201cThis is most likely because prolonged fasting can lead to volume depletion, which can affect kidney function.\u201d If you live with heart disease and take medication for it, you should consult with your doctor before trying intermittent fasting, or any type of diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anyone-with-a-history-of-eating-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone with a history of eating disorders\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intermittent fasting is generally<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34191688\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not recommended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people who have experienced eating disorders\u2014or those at risk for developing one. \u201cFasting is not appropriate for someone with a history of an eating disorder, as it can trigger unhealthy thoughts and disordered eating behaviors,\u201d Mitri says. Intermittent fasting also has the potential to make it more difficult to recognize hunger cues and may cause people to binge once they are in their eating window.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"people-with-diabetes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with diabetes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first glance, intermittent fasting may seem beneficial for people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After all, it leads to weight loss and stabilizes insulin levels. U<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nfortunately, there is<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6521152\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not enough research available<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to definitively prove its safety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, fasting can cause your blood sugars to crash, says Mitri. Not eating for extended periods of time <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6521152\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can lead to hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (blood sugar less than 60). Additionally, if you lose weight or your insulin sensitivity changes, your diabetes medication may need to be decreased. That being said, some nursing mothers practice intermittent fasting successfully by keeping their fasting periods short, drinking adequately, and eating nutrient-dense foods, explains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gillespie. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is also a good idea for these individuals to work with a registered dietitian to ensure that mom and baby are getting all of the nutrients they need,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gillespie<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-fast-safely\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to fast safely<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are intermittent fasting, keep these points in mind to make the experience as healthy and positive as possible:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Keep fasting windows short.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fasting for one or two days of the week may be more difficult than a plan where you simply eat between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Eat a small amount on fasting days.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some plans allow for a small number of calories, and in some interpretations a fasting diet can include some very low calorie food or drinks.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Stay hydrated <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even while you are refraining from consuming food.\u00a0 Drink water or black coffee.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Make sure to eat foods that provide you with balanced nutrition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during your \u201cfeasting\u201d windows.
