There are ways to make this process easier, though, so you don\u2019t have to either suffer from discontinuation syndrome or stay on a drug in spite of your desire to wean off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cProzac has a longer half-life [than some of these other drugs], so it can be used as a bridging drug,\u201d Dr. Merrill says. \u201cWe can transition off shorter-acting antidepressants into Prozac until your mood remains stable and we can get you off [the short-acting drug completely].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"which-antidepressants-have-the-mildest-side-effects\">Which antidepressants have the mildest side effects?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/depression\/in-depth\/antidepressants\/art-20046273\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs are considered the most well-tolerated antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, per the Mayo Clinic; they typically have fewer side effects than other types and can be safely used at higher doses. Common side effects of SSRIs include sexual dysfunction, weight gain, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, dizziness, and nausea. SNRIs are also considered fairly safe, though Dr. Dimitriu says they can sometimes cause insomnia and elevate your blood pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atypical antidepressants all come with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/atypical-antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effect profile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which includes dry mouth, headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/tricyclic-antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tricyclic antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are an older class and often carry more side effects: They have what Dr. Merrill calls a strong \u201ccross-reactivity\u201d with other drugs, a high instance of anticholinergic effects like blurred vision, sudden drops in blood pressure, and confusion, and can result more easily in toxicity than other antidepressants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAOIs can be complicated because they inhibit the metabolic response to an enzyme called tyramine, which causes them to potentially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanaddictioncenters.org\/antidepressants-guide\/maoi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interact with a significant number of foods and drugs containing tyramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As tyramine levels in the body rise, people can experience headaches, heart problems, nausea, and visual disturbances. It can be more challenging to take these drugs safely, but they do work well for some people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, it\u2019s important to know that starting any new antidepressant can lead to increased suicidal thoughts; while these are considered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ijnp\/article\/21\/9\/814\/5043110\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rare adverse events<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they are still possible, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.center4research.org\/antidepressants-increase-suicide-attempts-risks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially in children and adolescents taking antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s difficult for researchers to assess the risk of suicide related to antidepressants since there are so many factors to account for. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h517\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BMJ<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that MAOIs, atypical antidepressants, and SNRIs were more likely to result in suicide or self harm than SSRIs and tricyclic antidepressants, with the highest risks found with Remeron (mirtazapine), Effexor (venlafaxine), and Desyrel (trazodone).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you start taking a new antidepressant and notice an increase in thoughts related to suicide or death, reach out to a healthcare professional or trusted friend or family member as soon as possible. It\u2019s important to know what areas you, personally, need the most help with or want to see the most improvement in. With testing, you might be able to identify more quickly the class of drugs that will benefit you rather than going through months of ineffective drug trials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you\u2019ve failed with one or more antidepressants, it could be reasonable to do a pharmacogenomic test to see which one you\u2019re most likely to tolerate,\u201d advises Dr. Merrill.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-discuss-all-depression-treatment-options\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4.
