One of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/xanax-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Xanax is drowsiness. If you are feeling tired after taking\u00a0 Xanax, you may have reached for a cup of coffee to help you feel more awake. But mixing Xanax and caffeine is not a good idea. Here\u2019s what you need to know about drinking your morning joe if you\u2019ve taken this medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best time to take Xanax<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-xanax-last\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax starts to work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within one to two hours after taking it and lasts for about five hours. It can help you to feel relaxed, but when you take it with caffeine, the medication may not work. \u201cDrinking coffee can nullify the effects,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthcare.utah.edu\/fad\/mddetail.php?physicianID=u0103134\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bradley J Katz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, Ph.D., a professor and neuro-ophthalmologist at the University of Utah Medical Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How coffee affects anxiety or panic disorders<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may like the energy boost that drinking coffee provides, but too much caffeine can make you feel fidgety and increase your heart rate.\u00a0 When you experience anxiety or a panic disorder, you might also have an increased heart rate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCaffeine may aggravate symptoms in persons who are already anxious,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesaz.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linda Khoshaba<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, NMD, an endocrinologist in Scottsdale, Arizona. This might trigger a panic attack even though the increased heart rate is caused by the caffeine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCaffeine can set off a chain reaction of symptoms in persons predisposed to anxiety disorders, such as sweaty palms, a racing heart, and ringing in the ears, which can escalate to a full-fledged panic attack,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacobiradiology.org\/residency-program\/residents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rupen Garg,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MD, a resident at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to take Xanax or alprazolam safely<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cXanax can make you feel sleepy so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery after you take it,\u201d Dr. Katz says. Xanax can potentially be addictive. You should only use Xanax as prescribed and talk with your doctor about possible side effects and other food or drug interactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What food and drinks should be avoided when taking Xanax?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can take Xanax with or without food. However, you should avoid eating or drinking grapefruit and grapefruit juice. You should never mix Xanax with certain medications (especially drugs that also depress the CNS such as sleeping medications, opioids, or muscle relaxants), illegal drugs, or alcohol. These vitamins or supplements affect the nervous system and could have a negative interaction with Xanax.
