Ilyas, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of AmberNoon. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While summer acne can typically be caused by sweat and dirt, winter acne typically results from different factors.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cold-dry-air\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold, dry air<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One common cause of winter acne is dried out skin. Especially in non-coastal states, winters can prove to be very dry. When skin is not moisturized and taken care of, you are at risk of bacterial infection through cracks in the skin. \u201cAdditionally, the skin may overproduce natural oils to compensate for dryness, which may lead to acne breakouts,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Puopolo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, the president of LifeMD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"indoor-triggers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indoor triggers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take stock of your house as cozy winter habits can mess with your skin. Because we tend to spend more time indoors in the winter months, Dr. Puopolo explains, items like your pillowcases or sheets might not be cleaned frequently enough. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep up with your cleaning schedule even if you don\u2019t feel like you\u2019re sweating as much at night as you might in summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"dietary-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dietary changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your holiday plans might also contribute to skin irritation and acne. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some other reasons for winter acne can be caused by the holiday season,\u201d says Dr. Puopolo. \u201cExcessive sugar consumption is a direct contributor to acne in many, and holiday season tends to bring with it an abundance of sweets consumption.\u201d Other dietary triggers vary by person and can include dairy and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-are-carbohydrates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simple carbohydrates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In other words, all of those cheese plates aren\u2019t doing your skin any favors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-that-cause-dry-skin\/\"><b>Medications that cause dry skin<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-prevent-winter-acne\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent winter acne<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several steps you can take to make sure winter acne doesn\u2019t ruin your season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cDon\u2019t touch your face,\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> urges <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdacne.com\/mission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoram Harth, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dermatologist and medical director of MDacne<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s \u201ca good rule of thumb all year round\u201d for both your skin and overall health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Avoid harsh cleansers. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cExfoliation is not always a bad thing and there are times when our skin can really benefit from it,\u201d Dr. Ilyas. \u201cHowever, excess exfoliation achieved with physical or chemical exfoliants should be followed up with moisturizers to avoid excess dryness.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gentle skin cleansers (like Cetaphil) have a pH of 5.5 to 7, which is close to the pH of normal skin whereas a traditional soap has a pH of 9 to 10. The lower pH of skin cleansers helps to decrease skin irritation and dryness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Moisturize your skin. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many dermatologists recommend over-the-counter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cerave-daily-moisturizing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CeraVe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because \u201ccooler months can result in decreased ceramides in the skin that help protect the skin,\u201d explains Dr. Ilyas. \u201cAcne-prone skin has been shown to be affected by altered ceramide levels. This is actually CeraVe\u2019s benefit over other moisturizers&#8211;their focus on ceramides and maintaining the skin\u2019s barrier function.\u201d Dr. Harth says to use lotions with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/niacinamide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">niacinamide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because it \u201cis hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, and it helps offset any dryness from harsh winter conditions without adding a greasy finish to the skin.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Moisturize your environment.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cA humidifier may be a good idea as well for dry climates,\u201d says Dr. Puopolo.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Keep a clean house<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014especially the things that touch your skin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Be cognizant of your overall health.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Eating well and exercising is a great way to keep your skin in good health.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living your life with your health as a top priority is a good idea for overall wellness, so it follows that a healthy lifestyle will contribute to healthy skin as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/exercise-and-acne\/\"><b>Does sweat cause acne?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treatment-for-winter-acne\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for winter acne<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, acne doesn\u2019t occur because of a failing on your part but because of hormones. Sometimes you\u2019ve done everything right and still have painful acne. In these cases, winter acne treatment is necessary. The following can help:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benzoyl-peroxide\"><b>Benzoyl peroxide<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will reduce the acne causing bacteria to treat and prevent pimples,\u201d says Cynthia Bailey, MD, dermatologist and founder of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/drbaileyskincare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Cynthia Bailey Skin Care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To avoid over-drying, switch to a lower percentage of the active ingredient during winter months: 2.5% or 5% benzoyl peroxide is sufficient.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/salicylic-acid-cleanser\"><b>Salicylic acid<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will penetrate oily pores to reduce blackheads,\u201d Dr. Bailey says. This is a proven acne treatment, but a reduced-strength cream can help prevent dryness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hyaluronic-acid\"><b>Hyaluronic acid<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can moisturize without clogging pores. Try swapping this in favor of more drying treatments. \u201cIf you struggle with dry skin, consider removing and replacing retinol-based products<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from your skincare routine\u2014at least during the dry, colder, winter months,\u201d Dr. Harth says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consult your own healthcare professional if you cannot manage winter acne on your own.
