However, they&#8217;re usually unsustainable and potentially harmful. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But are there safe crash diets that work? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, experts look at these weight loss methods, explain the dangers of crash dieting, and suggest safer alternatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is a crash diet?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term \u201ccrash diet\u201d isn&#8217;t indicative of one specific diet but rather an umbrella term for a style of dieting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Crash diets gained their name from the crash that one can experience during and after the diet is completed,&#8221; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/telewellnessmd.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brent Agin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified family medicine physician, author, and founder of Trim Nutrition. &#8220;These types of diets are intended to achieve rapid weight loss through drastic reductions in calories and often in conjunction with eliminating at least one of the macronutrients<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most commonly carbohydrates.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The eating behaviors required for crash diets are &#8220;an extreme change from what is considered normal,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hans-watson-0a389740\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hans Watson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DO, a neuropsychiatrist, diet expert, and author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Two-Rule-Diet-Weight-still-favorite-ebook\/dp\/B094MQGM3G\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Two Rule Diet<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThey are not sustainable physically or psychologically.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of dieting often focuses on eating one type of food, and therefore are not nutritionally wholesome. Some examples include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juice cleanses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The grapefruit diet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cabbage soup diet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chicken soup diet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cottage cheese diet<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does crash dieting work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While crash diet results may appear impressive, it\u2019s only a short-term fix. &#8220;Crash diets will generally result in initial weight loss, but it&#8217;s seldom maintained,&#8221; Dr. Watson says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you cut your calorie intake drastically, you&#8217;ll lose weight. But it&#8217;s a problematic approach to weight loss that&#8217;s all too easily reversed when you become unable to follow the strict rules long-term\u2014and even if you could, it would be unhealthy for a variety of reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there a healthy crash diet?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be able to crash diet safely, providing you&#8217;re only planning on short-term weight loss, perhaps for a vacation or special event. &#8220;Crash diets can be deemed safe if they are used infrequently and never for more than 1-2 weeks,&#8221; says Dr. Agin. As long as they are short-term, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/landia\/article\/PIIS2213-8587(14)70200-1\/fulltext#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that crash diets can be effective for losing weight. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6366252\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over longer periods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they can lead to nutritional imbalances that affect bone health, inflammation, and increased uric acid levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, though, medical experts do not consider crash diets safe. &#8220;Most crash diets neglect proper nutritional and psychological health.
