It is also used to reduce the risk of central nervous system complications due to advanced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hepatic encephalopathy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Even though <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is taken by mouth as a tablet, it only affects bacteria in the gut. Very little of its active ingredient, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifaximin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is absorbed into the body. As a consequence, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are minimal, but that doesn\u2019t mean that there aren\u2019t <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug interactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A few tips, however, can help people avoid or minimize <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adverse effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-xifaxan-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects of Xifaxan<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/371405\/Xifaxan\/Adverse-Reactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> side effects of Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liver problems (elevated liver <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enzymes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling of the feet, hands, and arms (peripheral edema)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluid retention around the abdomen (ascites): <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bloating<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abdominal pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, weight gain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anemia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rash<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of Xifaxan<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/371405\/Xifaxan\/Adverse-Reactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clostridium difficile<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-associated diarrhea (CDAD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug-resistant bacterial superinfection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and safety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because very little <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifaximin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is absorbed into the body, most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are minimal. In <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many of the above <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were reported in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=c5e8e2fd-7087-4b78-9181-cc259c0be2f1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly equal numbers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by both people taking Xifaxan and a placebo pill. Only 0.4% of people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> quit due to intolerable <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is equal to the number of people who quit taking the placebo pill for the same reason. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were rare (less than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/afp\/2017\/0215\/p258.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in clinical studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"c-difficile-diarrhea\">C. difficile associated diarrhea<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/clostridium-difficile-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C. difficile-associated diarrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDAD) is a well-known hazard of antibiotics, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because antibiotics kill bacteria in the gut, they alter the microbe environment. This allows toxin-producing pathogens like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C. difficile<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to grow out of control after treatment has ended. A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C. difficile<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overgrowth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can start weeks or months after treatment has ended and range anywhere from a mild to life-threatening infection if it develops into a severe swelling of the colon (pseudomembranous <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The incidence of CDAD in people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifaximin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not known, but <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifaximin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is effective at killing off <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C. difficile<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and does not cause significant changes to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinicproceedings.org\/article\/S0025-6196(12)00814-2\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gut biome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. CDAD <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29069372\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is more likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people who have developed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifaximin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-resistant strains of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C. difficile<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is also more likely to occur in people with severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should know to contact their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if diarrhea recurs during treatment or in the days or weeks following treatment. They should get immediate medical help if the diarrhea is watery or bloody.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-side-effects-last\">How long do Xifaxan side effects last?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=c5e8e2fd-7087-4b78-9181-cc259c0be2f1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">97%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifaximin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dose is excreted through the feces. Only a small amount enters the body. Most of the common gastrointestinal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should clear up by the time the last dose is excreted through the feces, although some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may get better as the body gets used to the medicine. For systemic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the half-life of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifaximin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is roughly six hours, so most of these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will clear up in less than a day after the last dose. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergic reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may require several days of treatment to improve. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDAD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can occur up to two months after antibiotic treatment and typically takes about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nyulangone.org\/conditions\/clostridium-difficile-infections-in-adults\/support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two weeks to treat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While some cases are mild, severe cases may have lifelong complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contraindications and warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drugs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have contraindications and warnings. However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifaximin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is barely absorbed into the body, so it causes fewer problems than other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drugs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Food and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug Administration<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) does not consider <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be a drug with the potential for abuse or physical dependence. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be discontinued at any point without causing withdrawal symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overdose is not considered hazardous. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=c5e8e2fd-7087-4b78-9181-cc259c0be2f1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of taking too much <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were the same as the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people who took too much of the placebo pill. However, if too much <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is taken, call a poison helpline or get emergency medical treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restrictions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/371403\/Xifaxan\/Contradindications-Cautions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">few restrictions or contraindications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are allergic to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifaximin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or have a known <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypersensitivity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifamycin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> antibiotics (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rifampin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifampin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, rifapentine, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rifabutin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifabutin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) will not be given <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with other pre-existing physical or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without dose reductions or extra monitoring. The only exceptions are people with severe liver <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impairment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Child-Pugh class C) or people with a history of pseudomembranous <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> following antibiotic treatment. They will need to be monitored for potentially severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy and nursing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there is no information to determine the risk, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifaximin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is prescribed to women in the second and third trimesters of a pregnancy, but it is avoided in the first trimester. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=c5e8e2fd-7087-4b78-9181-cc259c0be2f1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, excessive doses given to animals in the early stages of a pregnancy produced higher levels of birth defects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is concerned, there is also no information on whether <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affects lactation, transfers into human breast milk, or causes problems in a nursing infant. Because so little of the drug is absorbed into the body, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/371413\/Xifaxan\/Pregnancy-Lactation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare providers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is safe to breastfeed when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifaximin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-approved as a safe and effective treatment of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E. coli<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-induced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traveler\u2019s diarrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in children as young as 12 years of age. It is not FDA approved for any other conditions in children. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, healthcare providers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may prescribe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xifaxan<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to children as young as 3 years old as an add-on treatment for recurrent <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C. difficile<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> infections.
