It includes the same coverage as Parts A, B, and usually D, plus some extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn\u2019t cover, such as hearing, vision, or dental benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-medicare-advantage-part-c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Medicare Advantage (Part C)?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage plans, also called Medicare Part C or MA plans, are privately administered health insurance plans that offer Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B benefits. The insurance companies must follow the rules and regulations set by Medicare. The major benefit of MA health plans is that they sometimes come with extra perks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-do-medicare-advantage-plans-cover\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do Medicare Advantage plans cover?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMedicare Advantage is a [privately administered] alternative to Original Medicare that bundles the parts of Original Medicare along with additional benefits,\u201d explains<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/blog\/author\/kashford\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kate Ashford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Medicare specialist at NerdWallet. \u201cIt includes Part A and Part B and often Part D drug coverage, plus some extra benefits such as cost help with dental and vision care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-qualifies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who qualifies?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are eligible for an MA plan as long as you are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-medicare\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eligible for Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, have Parts A and B, and live in that plan\u2019s service area. There is no income limit for those who want to enroll in Medicare Advantage plans. There are even some special needs plans for those with a limited income.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"6-types-of-medicare-advantage-plans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 types of Medicare Advantage plans<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are six types of Medicare Advantage plans. The most popular of these plans are health maintenance organization (HMO) plans and preferred provider organization (PPO) plans. Here are the six Medicare Part C plans offered from most popular to least popular.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-hmo-plans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. HMO plans<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/healthcare-define-hmo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HMO plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> generally only cover healthcare services that are done within a specific network of doctors and hospitals. If you choose to use someone out-of-network, you will likely have to pay in full without the help of your plan. While you have fewer options for obtaining medical services with an HMO plan, services are typically cheaper overall than those offered with PPO plans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hmo-vs-ppo\/\"> <b>HMO vs. PPO plans<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-ppo-plans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. PPO plans<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-a-ppo\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PPO plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is still a network of providers that you can visit for lower costs. However, if you see an out-of-network provider, insurance will still cover it, but it will likely come at higher costs to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-private-fee-for-service-plans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Private fee-for-service plans<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some fee-for-service plans, or PFFS plan,s will have a network. If the plan has no network, you can use any provider that accepts Medicare. These plans are not very popular, as it is possible that healthcare providers will not agree to your plan&#8217;s reimbursement rates and refuse your service if they\u2019re not in-network. As another downside, these plans typically do not include a prescription drug plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/healthcare-defined-out-of-network\/\"> <b>What does \u2018out-of-network\u2019 mean?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-special-needs-plans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Special needs plans<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Special needs plans, or SNPS, are often recommended for individuals with chronic health conditions. These plans are customized to their specific needs. SNPS are also popular among individuals who have both<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/difference-between-medicare-and-medicaid\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare and Medicaid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or those living in nursing homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-medicare-cover-pre-existing-conditions\/\"> <b>Does Medicare cover pre-existing conditions?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-medical-savings-accounts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Medical savings accounts<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical savings accounts (MSAs) are not common, but a few select Medicare Advantage plans use this method. In MSAs, you\u2019ll have a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/high-deductible-health-plan\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high deductible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hsa-pros-and-cons\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health savings account<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where money is deposited monthly. These plans typically do not include any prescription coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-hmo-point-of-service\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. HMO point-of-service<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These plans, as the HMO name suggests, have a network of providers. However, with HMO point-of-service plans, some out-of-network costs will be covered at a higher rate. However, certain plans may also only be available based on your location.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Provider<\/b><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal government<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Private insurance\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-changes\/\"><b>Costs<\/b><\/a><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part A is premium-free for most individuals with a deductible. Coinsurance applies to covered inpatient stays longer than 60 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part B has a monthly premium, deductible, and coinsurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part D has a monthly base premium, a variable deductible, and coinsurance\/copays until an out-of-pocket threshold is met.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MA premiums, copayments, and deductibles vary.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* This is a summary of coverage. There are other benefits not listed here.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-tips-for-choosing-between-original-medicare-and-medicare-advantage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other tips for choosing between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans is that Original Medicare is provided by the government, while Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private companies.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage plans are typically less expensive than Original Medicare for healthy adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you can contact Medicare to return to Original Medicare at certain times of the year.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can have Medicare supplemental insurance with Original Medicare, which is referred to as a Medigap policy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"advantages-of-medicare-advantage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advantages of Medicare Advantage<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMedicare Advantage plans usually include extra perks, such as cost savings toward hearing, dental, and vision care,&#8221; Ashford says. &#8220;Many of the plans also come with a $0 premium, which is a plus.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MA plans also have an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/out-of-pocket-maximum\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out-of-pocket limit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while Original Medicare does not. That means your MA plan will pay 100% of covered costs after you\u2019ve spent a certain dollar amount, but with Original Medicare, you\u2019ll always need to pay the 20% coinsurance (unless you have supplemental insurance or have low income and qualify for certain Medicare Savings Programs).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor healthy adults who do not need frequent visits to the doctor, Medicare Advantage plans may be a good option,\u201d Ashford says. It\u2019s also possible to switch back to Original Medicare coverage during the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-open-enrollment\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appropriate enrollment periods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but there\u2019s one caveat. \u201cIf you decide you want to switch back to Original Medicare later, you may not be able to get a Medigap plan if you\u2019re in poor health, depending on the state you live in.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"disadvantages-of-a-medicare-advantage-plan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disadvantages of a Medicare Advantage plan<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Medicare Advantage plans have many perks, there are reasons that individuals choose to stay with Original Medicare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnlike Original Medicare, which is accepted everywhere in the country that takes Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans operate within a network of providers, and usually within a geographic area,\u201d says Ashford. \u201cYou have less flexibility in terms of medical providers since you must stay within the plan\u2019s network.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll likely be charged higher costs if you see a provider out-of-network, and may need a referral to see a specialist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An analysis by the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicare\/issue-brief\/medicare-advantage-in-2021-premiums-cost-sharing-out-of-pocket-limits-and-supplemental-benefits\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaiser Family Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that after six days in the hospital, more than half of those with MA plans may end up paying more out-of-pocket costs. As the hospital stays increase to 20 days, 81% of Medicare Advantage plan users will pay more than Original Medicare beneficiaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some doctors may not take MA plans, as the insurance company and the provider will need to come to an agreement first. If your healthcare provider does not have a business agreement with your insurer, then they will be considered out-of-network, and you will pay full price for their services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other restrictions, such as prior authorization of services, drugs, and supplies, may apply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-enroll-in-an-ma-plan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to enroll in an MA plan<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019d like to sign up for Medicare benefits, visit the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/benefits\/medicare\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Security Administration\u2019s website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to see if you were automatically enrolled upon turning 65. Find the right Medicare plan for you by comparing plans, prices, and coverage options with the help of Medicare\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/plan-compare\/#\/?lang=en&amp;year=2022\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comparison tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
