Medication choices for diabetes are based on how much glucose control is needed, whether a person has heart or kidney disease or other medical conditions, the risk of low blood sugar, cost and access to the medication, possible <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the potential impact on a person\u2019s weight. Compared with some other medications for diabetes, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a greater impact on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In a clinical trial <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(18)31773-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <em>The Lancet<\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when compared to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liraglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and placebo, individuals taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lost more weight. As such, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be a good choice for individuals with diabetes who would benefit from weight loss.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Gastrointestinal side effects<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">receptor agonists<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are associated with gastrointestinal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2020\/209637s003lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, more of these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurred as the dose increased. Greater than 5% of individuals experienced nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abdominal pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and\/or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation with Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over 20% of individuals taking the highest recommended dose of Ozempic reported nausea. Nausea, in particular, tends to be worse if individuals continue to eat after they feel full. The dose of Ozempic should be increased slowly if these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> persist.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/can-ozempic-cause-muscle-pain\/\"><b>Can Ozempic cause muscle pain?<\/b><\/a><b> <\/b><b>\u2502<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><b><\/b><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-headaches\/\">Does Ozempic cause headaches?<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<h3>Retinopathy<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are elevated for a long time, the extra <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the blood can damage the lining of small blood vessels in the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye). When these blood vessels are damaged, changes such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blurred vision<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and floating spots or streaks may occur. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2020\/209637s003lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 8.2% of individuals who had <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetic retinopathy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when starting Ozempic experienced complications. As such, people with a history of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetic retinopathy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be closely monitored for progression while taking this medication. Everyone with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should have a full eye exam every year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of Ozempic<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/24905\/ozempic\/Adverse-Reactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be serious or life-threatening. This risk is increased by certain lifestyle choices and medications. In glycemic control trials, acute <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was confirmed in seven patients taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As such, individuals taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be monitored for signs and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms of pancreatitis such as<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nausea, vomiting, and severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abdominal pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that may also be felt in the back. If <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is suspected, seek medical attention right away. If <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is diagnosed, do not continue Ozempic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The severity of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often depends on how much medication is being taken. Some common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may go away with time, after dose adjustments, or once the body is used to a more normal level of glucose. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injection site<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reactions can be minimized by occasionally changing the location of your injections. More serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kidney problems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, gallbladder problems, tumors, and anaphylaxis, will likely require the medication to be stopped.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contraindications and warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Abuse and dependence: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not habit-forming or addictive. Discontinuation of this medication is not associated with withdrawal symptoms; however, dangerous elevations in blood glucose levels may occur.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Overdose: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The maximum adult dosage for this medication is one, 1 mg <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subcutaneous<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injection per week. Taking too much of this medication could result in low blood sugar, which is life-threatening. If you think you may have taken too much of this medication, immediately seek emergency medical care or contact the Poison Control Centers at 1-800-222-1222.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Restrictions: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This medication is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> approved for use in adults only.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Who should not use Ozempic?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This medication should not be used by anyone who has had an allergic reaction to the medication. It should also not be used by the following groups of people:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> Type 2 (MEN 2)<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span>Ozempic was demonstrated to cause thyroid C-cell tumors in animal studies. There is also a risk of medullary thyroid cancer. This medication carries a black box warning and should not be used by anyone with a personal or family history of MTC or MEN 2.<\/li>\n<li><strong>People with Type 1 diabetes<\/strong> &#8211; This medication is not a treatment for Type 1 Diabetes or the management of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal studies demonstrated a risk of harm to a fetus when taking this medication. Effective contraception should be used during treatment and for at least two months after stopping treatment in females.
