(Current Allergy and Asthma Reports, 2017)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"complications\">Asthma and overall health<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma can easily reduce your quality of life if it\u2019s not managed well. \u201cIf you have poorly controlled asthma, you\u2019ll also have decreased activity and [will be more likely to live a] sedentary lifestyle, which can lead to things that actually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/viral-induced-asthma-flare\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worsen asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like obesity,\u201d Dr. Youssef says. Additionally, asthma has the following impact on overall health:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Asthma can require urgent or emergency medical care<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. More than 1 million emergency department visits each year are for asthma-related concerns. (American College of Asthma, Allergy &amp; Immunology, 2018)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Uncontrolled asthma can cause frequent hospitalizations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Severe asthma can be life threatening. It accounts for more than 400,000 hospitalizations each year in the U.S., and these inpatient stays often come with both physical and mental side effects. \u201cHospitalization treatment focuses on improving breathing [sometimes via intubation], bronchodilators, and IV steroids,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonmethodist.org\/doctor\/rashad-ramkissoon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashad Ramkissoon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a primary care physician at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. \u201cHospitalizations and ICU stays for asthma could lead to depression once discharged.\u201d (American College of Asthma, Allergy &amp; Immunology, 2018)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Asthma causes other illnesses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dr. Ramkissoon notes that people with asthma have an increased risk of severe pneumonia and vocal cord dysfunction, which can be caused by a poor response to the medical management of asthma. According to one 2020 study, asthma is also linked to rhinitis, acid reflux, obstructive sleep apnea, and psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression. (npj Primary Care Respiratory Medicine, 2020).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Asthma can affect a child\u2019s growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Poorly controlled asthma slows growth velocity in children, says Dr. Ramkissoon, citing a 2019 review of studies which showed that more severe asthma often correlates with slower growth. (Jornal de Pediatria, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"costs\">The cost of asthma<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If uncontrolled, asthma can lead to a number of financial implications including missed time from work, insurance copays, charges related to urgent care and hospitalizations, and prescription drug costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you combine missed workdays, medical expenses, and deaths, the American Thoracic Society (ATS) estimates that the U.S. spends about $80 billion on asthma-related costs each year. (American Thoracic Society, 2018)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of that $80 billion, about $30 billion is spent on mortality-related costs. (American Thoracic Society, 2018)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On average, an asthma-related visit to the emergency room costs about $400, while a hospital admission for asthma costs about $5,000, with an average length of stay of three to four days. (American Health &amp; Drug Benefits, 2021)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average asthmatic in the U.S. spends more than $3,000 annually on their condition, with more than half of that amount going toward prescription drugs. (American Thoracic Society, 2018)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping up with asthma treatment plans is expensive: a 2014 study found that people with asthma attacks receiving treatment had higher out-of-pocket expenses than those not receiving treatment, but not necessarily fewer asthma attacks. (The American Journal of Managed Care, 2014)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"causes\">Causes of asthma<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma usually occurs when the immune system overreacts or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health-topics\/asthma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has a heightened response to something in the lungs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. That response inflames the airways, which makes it harder to breathe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many causes of asthma, but researchers still aren\u2019t certain what, exactly, initiates the airway inflammation associated with asthma in individual patients. They <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/lung-health-diseases\/lung-disease-lookup\/asthma\/asthma-symptoms-causes-risk-factors\/what-causes-asthma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genetics, allergies, infections, and environmental exposures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are all risk factors that contribute to the rates of asthma in any population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you already have asthma, numerous things can cause an asthma attack or exacerbate your symptoms. These are called triggers, and they are different for everyone with asthma. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafa.org\/asthma-triggers-causes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common asthma triggers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergens such as dust mites, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/mold-allergy-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and pet dander<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental irritants like tobacco smoke (including secondhand smoke) and cockroaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health conditions such as viral infections or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/copd-vs-asthma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical activity\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cold-induced-asthma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain types of weather or weather changes<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"prevention\">Preventing asthma attacks<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to prevent an asthma attack is to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/asthma-attack-triggers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know your triggers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and be sensitive to the early signs of inflammation or difficulty breathing. With this approach, you may be able to change your environment, adjust your medication, or even premedicate to avoid an attack.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/peak-flow-meter\/about\/pac-20394858\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peak flow meter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be helpful in managing your asthma. \u201cA peak flow meter measures how much air you can exhale in one minute,\u201d explains Dr. Youssef, \u201cwhich can tell you day to day how you\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a national level, there are multiple agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ephtracking.cdc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that are working to help implement important strategies to prevent people from developing asthma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within communities, local employers and environmental groups can also tackle some common causes of asthma, says Dr. Ramkissoon: \u201cSmoking cessation programs offered by employers are key [and] air quality control is another [important] factor in preventing asthma.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treatment\">Controlling asthma<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per Dr. Youssef, there are three main categories of treatments which can help patients control asthma:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Short-acting asthma inhalers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for well-controlled and\/or intermittent asthma (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ventolin-hfa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ventolin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levalbuterol-tartrate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xopenex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Long-acting inhalers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used on a regular schedule for baseline control of symptoms (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advair-hfa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/symbicort\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symbicort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Injectables or biologics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which target the specific causes of asthma in individuals (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xolair\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xolair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dupixent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dupixent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So which treatment\u2014or combination of treatments\u2014is right for you? It depends on what type of asthma you have and the severity of your condition. \u201cNot all patients have the same form of asthma and different mechanisms cause it to happen, so understanding what type you have can help identify treatment,\u201d Dr. Youssef says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe new advancements in asthma management have been [related to] figuring out the subtypes of asthma and working out the best way to target that specific patient,\u201d Dr. Youssef adds. Injectable drugs and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/17711-biologic-therapy-for-severe-asthma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biologic medications have become an important part of the conversation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around treating the unique causes of asthma in individuals. Although it\u2019s hard to pinpoint any one cause\u2014remember, there are several factors that can cause asthma in any one person\u2014it\u2019s clear that asthma rates have been rising.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Ramkissoon says there are many reasons why asthma is more prevalent today than in previous years, including an increase in airborne allergens, climate changes that trigger a rise in pollen levels, the energy-proofing of homes and workspaces, urban air pollution, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/Tools-for-the-Public\/Conditions-Library\/Allergies\/prevalence-of-allergies-and-asthma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overuse of antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the death rate of asthma? Does asthma shorten life expectancy?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uncontrolled asthma can shorten life expectancy. In 2020, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/fastats\/asthma.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC reported the asthma death rate as 1.3 per 100,000 people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (there were 4,145 total asthma-related deaths).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Ramkissoon notes that adults are more likely to die from asthma than children, and that one European study showed asthma in an otherwise healthy population shortened life expectancy by three years, similar to the effect of smoking.
