Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine dimesylate)<\/span><\/a> is a less renowned cousin of <\/span>Adderall (dextroamphetamine-amphetamine)<\/span><\/a>. Like Adderall, Vyvanse is a <\/span>central nervous system stimulant<\/span><\/a>. Vyvanse triggers the release of the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine within our nerve endings to produce myriad effects, both for the better and worse. This brand-name prescription drug is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of <\/span>attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>binge eating disorder<\/span><\/a>. It\u2019s prescribed to men, women, and children. All patients can experience Vyvanse side effects, but there are some that are specific to men.<\/span><\/p>\n

ADHD and binge eating disorders in males<\/span><\/h2>\n

Symptoms of ADHD inattentiveness, impulsiveness, and restlessness. These deficits manifest as difficulty with organizing oneself and in identifying and working toward goals. Consequently, challenges can arise in the workplace, from limiting professional advancement to maintaining employment. The difficulties can also extend to social elements and relationships, as a result of struggles with regulating emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vyvanse is also approved to treat moderate to severe binge eating disorders. Unfortunately, eating disorders get much less attention from men, and this is because of a gross lack of recognition. The most common of these is binge eating disorder, defined as eating an abnormally large amount in a relatively short period of time (two hours or less) at least weekly for more than three months. Binge eating disorder afflicts 2% of U.S. men, and less than half of them seek treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are effective treatments available for binge eating disorder. Counseling is often a first choice, and medications are another good option. The drug classes that are used include antidepressants, seizure medications, and central nervous system (CNS) stimulants like Vyvanse. Vyvanse can <\/span>more than double the chance of abstaining<\/span><\/a> from binges compared to placebo (an inactive drug for comparison in studies).<\/span><\/p>\n
