It can be so mild that many people don\u2019t even realize they have it. Or, so severe that when uncontrolled, it can cause frightening, potentially deadly, breathing attacks. Fortunately, after asthma is diagnosed, it can be well-controlled. Often early signs of an asthma attack are predictable and\u00a0 an asthma attack can be effectively treated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"early-signs-asthma\">5 early signs of asthma<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma is a \u201cchronic illness of the lower airways,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidzmedical.com\/provider\/kunjana-mavunda-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kunjana Mavunda, MD, pediatric pulmonologist with KIDZ Medical Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It causes the breathing tubes, or bronchial tubes, in your lungs to narrow or become mucus-filled. If untreated, these symptoms can lead to an asthma attack, an acute episode when the muscles surrounding your airways tighten and your bronchial tubes become swollen\u2014making it hard to breathe. There are two types of warning signs:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early asthma symptoms that may make you visit a healthcare provider for a diagnosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early signs of asthma attacks\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing both can help you get a diagnosis and avoid dangerous breathing problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main goals of asthma treatment are to control asthma symptoms and reduce the risk of asthma exacerbations, all while minimizing adverse effects of medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chet-tharpe-jr-md-0416b5125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chet Tharpe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, dual-certified allergist and immunologist, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical director at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/partner.getcurex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, symptoms indicating you may have asthma include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prolonged upper respiratory tract infections that persist past the typical 7-10 day course of illness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheezing during viral illness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seasonal coughs that seem to last for weeks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling chest tightness with exertion, like running around<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stopping or needing to slow down during physical activity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain medical conditions might exacerbate asthma or they may confuse symptoms that look like asthma: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gerd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastroesophageal reflux<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (GERD), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/sinus-infection-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sinusitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/copd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic obstructive pulmonary disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (COPD), or other respiratory illnesses. Having one of these conditions may trigger early signs of asthma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you have asthma without a cough?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that asthma attacks can sometimes happen without warning, which is called silent asthma. \u201cSilent asthma is when asthma symptoms are present, but not recognized,\u201d Dr. Mavunda explains. \u201cThese patients may be first diagnosed after they have had an attack.\u201d If you miss subtle early warning signs, an attack may feel like it comes on out of the blue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"diagnosis\">Receiving an asthma diagnosis<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have any signs of asthma, it\u2019s important to seek treatment. To formally diagnose asthma, your healthcare provider will take a medical and family history, complete a physical exam, and run a series of breathing tests. The breathing tests can either be done in the office with a spirometry test, which is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">measurement of the volume of air exhaled during a forceful and complete exhalation. Or, you may need pulmonary function tests, which are done in an airtight room and give even more information. Additionally,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you may be referred to an allergist to figure out if a specific allergen is triggering symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma is a complex condition. It is further categorized by the frequency of symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Intermittent: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms come and go<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Persistent:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You have symptoms most of the time<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, there are a few specific types of asthma:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exercise-induced asthma: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triggered by working out<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Occupational asthma:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Occurs when exposed to irritating fumes at work\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Asthma-COPD overlap syndrome (ACOS): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dual diagnosis of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two main categories of causes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Allergic: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergens trigger an exacerbation of asthma, such as pollen or pet dander<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Non-allergic: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">External factors make asthma symptoms worse, like weather or stress<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though, scientists don\u2019t know why one person may develop asthma and another may not. \u201cGenetics, environment, and diet may lead to increased symptoms,\u201d Dr. Mavunda says. Established triggers for asthma include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergens such as dust mites or pollen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respiratory infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weather<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposure to chemicals, air pollution, or smoke<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are substances or conditions that may bring on an asthma attack for you. They can be different for everyone. Knowing and avoiding triggers can help to prevent asthma attacks, as can diagnosing and treating early symptoms of asthma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your provider will rule out other illnesses like pneumonia or a mental health problem, including anxiety. \u201cAsthma and anxiety can both flare with stress and feelings of panic and heart palpitations, so it may not always be easy to distinguish the two,\u201d Dr. Tharpe says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Mavunda agrees, \u201cA shortness of breath one feels when they are having an asthma attack may seem like an anxiety attack.\u201d However, an anxiety attack goes away with breathing techniques or anxiety medication while an asthma attack requires an inhaler or other medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What age does asthma usually start?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma can occur for the first time at different stages of life:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Adult-onset: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms first start after your teens<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pediatric:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Typically diagnosed around age 5<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look out for symptoms in young children and toddlers, as asthma is often diagnosed by age 6. \u201cUsually, we say that asthma cannot be diagnosed before the age of 2 years,\u201d Dr. Mavunda says. \u201cHowever, if an infant has signs of allergies\u2014food, environment, skin, and wheezes frequently, that child may be diagnosed earlier.\u201d Common early signs of asthma in toddlers include coughing while playing or stopping play to rest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms can also present later in adolescence\u2014especially when going through puberty. \u201cHormonal changes may also lead to asthma,\u201d explains Dr. Mavunda. Symptoms may improve during young adulthood, then reappear later in life. \u201cWomen who had asthma when younger, and whose asthma may have been controlled without medications for many years, may restart with symptoms in their 40s,\u201d Dr. Mavunda says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, asthma affects adults, too. Don\u2019t ignore new asthma symptoms as it can reappear at any time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treatment\">Learning to treat asthma<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma is treatable. \u201cThe goal of asthma management is to have the least number of symptoms, and a good quality of life with proper control of the environment, avoiding irritants, both edible as well as inhaled and the correct use of proper medications that cause the least amount of side effects,\u201d Dr. Mavunda says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/albuterol-sulfate-hfa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">albuterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inhaler is the first step in treating asthma. However, this may not be enough for more severe asthma. If you need albuterol more than twice a week, you most likely need <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/asthma-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asthma medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-a-nebulizer-machine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nebulizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steroid inhalers, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/qvar-redihaler\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Qvar<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral steroids, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prednisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monoclonal antibodies injection, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nucala\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nucala<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventive oral medication, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/singulair\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singulair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider will help you find the treatment regimen that works best for you. Keeping an eye out for early signs and managing them quickly is the key to living a full, healthy life with asthma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"asthma-attacks\">12 early signs of an asthma attack<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you\u2019re on asthma medications, you need a rescue inhaler because it functions to rescue you. Carry your rescue inhaler on you at all times and prepare for these early symptoms of an asthma attack:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scratchy or sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleeping poorly\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise intolerance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent coughing, especially at night<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest and\/or neck tightness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheezing\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feelings of anxiety and panic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pale, sweaty face<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue lips or fingertips<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These symptoms can occur in combination, or separately. You might have certain symptoms before one asthma attack and different symptoms before another.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your inhalers are not working and you continue to feel short of breath, you need to get emergent care and may need to call 911.
