Flush medications? Not typically\u2014this has environmental risks for certain drugs, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/safe-disposal-medicines\/disposal-unused-medicines-what-you-should-know#Medicines_recommended\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Give them to a friend? Never (this is not safe or legal, says Dr. Sean D. Sullivan, professor and dean of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Washington School of Pharmacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Can you return unused medicine to the pharmacy ? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/regulatory-information\/search-fda-guidance-documents\/cpg-sec-460300-return-unused-prescription-drugs-pharmacy-stock\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not an option<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (except for certain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getsmartaboutdrugs.gov\/content\/dea-allows-return-unused-medications-pharmacies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approved drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at certain locations).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This leaves two choices. Dispose of them at a safe collection site (enter your zip code in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/safe.pharmacy\/drug-disposal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Association of Boards of Pharmacy Drug Disposal Locator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find one near you), or donate them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Unused medication donation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donating might seem like the way to go, considering the amount of medications that go to waste each year in the United States: $5 billion worth per year, says Kiah Williams, co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sirum.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sirum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a non-profit organization that helps collect and redistribute surplus medications from pharmacies and healthcare facilities to low-income individuals. However, it isn\u2019t as simple as rounding up your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-recycle-pill-bottles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pill bottles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and dropping them off at a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/giving-back-to-the-community\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local charity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rules and opportunities vary by state. The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Conference of State Legislatures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that 38 states and Guam have passed laws allowing for the establishment of medication donation and re-use programs as of 2018, but they do not all have programs in place. Among those that do, only a few have avenues for individuals to donate unused medication. Fortunately, some accept out of state donations by mail.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Where can I donate unused medication?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of those that accepts out-of-state donations is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.wyo.gov\/medicationdonation\/donate-meds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wyoming Department of Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which accepts donations of sealed medication that is five or more months out from its expiration date. Donors collect and prepare the bottles, fill out a public medication donation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.wyo.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Public-Medication-Donation-Form.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ship (or, if you live in Wyoming the donation can be dropped off at a collection site). Iowa\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/safenetrx.org\/drug-donation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SafeNetRX<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program is similar. And if you happen to be in Louisiana, you can take prescription donations directly to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/svdpbr.org\/community-pharmacy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on weekdays between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Additional details on programs and regulations across various states are listed on the NCSL website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sirum.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sirum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also provides information on donation programs, but it is important to note that they do <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facilitate donations between individual consumers and the organizations that provide them to people in need, says Williams\u2014only healthcare facilities, pharmacies, manufacturers, wholesalers, and other related entities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have been called a Match.com for unused medicines,\u201d Williams says. \u201cWe work with hundreds of organizations who have surplus medications, and community clinics and charitable pharmacies are on the receiving end.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-get-rid-of-unused-medicine\/\"> <b>How to properly dispose of used prescription drugs<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonetheless, Williams says individuals can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help out by encouraging places you do business with, like a family member\u2019s assisted living facility for example, to donate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can ask \u2018what happens to unused medications here?\u2019, or \u2018are you donating?\u2019\u201d she says, adding that ideally this would lead to more and more facilities and organizations getting on board the donation train.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Remember these two rules<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williams also points out that whether you are an individual seeking to donate a medication that was prescribed but never used, or a healthcare facility with a surplus, there are two important rules that apply to every program in existence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, expired and\/or opened medications are never accepted. They must be in their original, sealed containers. Requirements for expiration dates vary by program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, don\u2019t attempt to donate opioids (such as Percocet or OxyContin) or other controlled substances (such as Xanax)\u2014these drugs are not eligible for donation. Most other types of prescription medications are accepted, says Williams, but the ones that seems to come through the program most frequently are \u201cthe kind of medications people need for chronic diseases on an ongoing basis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe surplus \u2026 mirrors the medications that are most needed,\u201d she says. \u201cSo we are looking at medications for things like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, COPD, and mental health or behavioral health medications.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If your medicine cabinet is brimming with prescription medications you never used, you might be wondering what, if anything, you can do with them.
