While those who aren\u2019t familiar with Medicare often consider it to be \u201call under one umbrella,\u201d there are four different parts of Medicare, including Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B, Medicare Advantage (or Medicare Part C), and Medicare Part D. Each part of Medicare covers different types of health services.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"medicare-part-a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part A<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are five main areas <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-medicare-part-a\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part A<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> covers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inpatient hospital care\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skilled nursing facility care<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nursing home care<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hospice care<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home health care<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part A costs may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Medicare beneficiaries with Part A will have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/your-medicare-costs\/part-a-costs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$0 premium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but depending on your or your spouse\u2019s work history, you may pay a monthly fee.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also a hospital deductible per benefit period.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re admitted to the hospital or a skilled nursing facility, the first 60 days will cost $0. However, you\u2019ll owe coinsurance if you stay 61 or more days unless you have supplemental coverage, such as Medigap.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/basics\/costs\/medicare-costs\/avoid-penalties\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Late enrollment penalties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> apply if you are not automatically enrolled and do not sign up for Part A when you are first eligible for Medicare.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>You may need Part A if you<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are planning to have any major surgeries or have been previously hospitalized. However, since most people have premium-free Medicare Part A, it\u2019s smart to sign up if you\u2019re eligible for Medicare, if you are not automatically enrolled, to avoid late enrollment fees.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"medicare-part-b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part B<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-medicare-part-b\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part B<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is medical insurance that covers medically necessary doctor services, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical supplies. Many people enroll in Medicare Part B upon becoming eligible, but you may consider delaying enrollment if you have a health insurance plan through your employer or your spouse\u2019s employer. When consumers enroll in Medicare Advantage, they are opting to receive their Medicare coverage through a private plan <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instead of<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fee-for-service Original Medicare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, Medicare Advantage plans cover:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All Part A and Part B benefits, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/what-medicare-covers\/what-part-a-covers\/how-hospice-works\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some approved hospice services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and excluding clinical trials.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other potential benefits may include wellness programs, vision and hearing services, dental services, and transportation to and from medical appointments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part D benefits<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The costs of Medicare Advantage plans will vary across insurance providers and their offerings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Medicare Advantage plans may have a $0 premium, while others will have a monthly premium.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Copays, coinsurance, and deductibles also vary by plan.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>You may need Medicare Advantage if you <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want or require benefits not included in Original Medicare, such as transportation or dental services. However, you may need to follow more specific rules with Part C plans, such as using an in-network healthcare provider or getting a referral for specialists when you have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hmo-vs-ppo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health maintenance organization (HMO) and preferred provider organization (PPO) plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"medicare-part-d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-part-d-plans\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare prescription drug coverage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is optional through Part D. It is not part of Original Medicare coverage. You can either enroll in a stand-alone prescription drug plan or include it as part of your Medicare Advantage plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D plans typically cover:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccines<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-part-d-costs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The costs of these plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will vary depending on which plan you choose, but the following may apply:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monthly premiums apply based on income.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Medicare Part D plans may have a $0 deductible, while others will have a deductible.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you meet your deductible (if you have one), you\u2019ll owe a copay or coinsurance for covered prescriptions. Copays and\/or coinsurance amounts vary by plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you reach a certain out-of-pocket threshold, you won\u2019t owe a copay\/coinsurance for covered prescriptions for the rest of the year.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may also qualify for the Medicare Extra Help subsidy that will help cover some Part D costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You may need Part D if you<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> take prescriptions regularly, so you can reduce your prescription drug costs. Part D also covers several vaccines that Part B does not, such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-medicare-cover-shingles-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shingles shot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Part D is optional; however, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-part-d-penalty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">late enrollment penalties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> apply if you do not sign up for Part D when you are first eligible for Medicare and you do not have creditable drug coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"original-medicare-vs-medicare-advantage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that there is a difference between Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), sometimes called Traditional Medicare, and Medicare Advantage plans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage is an alternative to Original Medicare\u2014people can\u2019t enroll in both. It\u2019s provided by private insurance companies. Another perk of Medicare Advantage plans is that they usually cover extra benefits that Original Medicare does not cover, such as dental, vision, and hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Medicare is made up of Medicare Parts A and B. If you\u2019d like your prescription drugs to be covered, you can also sign up for a stand-alone Medicare Part D drug plan. Since you\u2019ll have out-of-pocket costs with Medicare, such as the 20% coinsurance, you can also obtain supplemental coverage insurance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One benefit of Original Medicare is that it can be used anywhere within the United States. That\u2019s not necessarily the case with Medicare Advantage, as many of these plans can only be used with in-network healthcare providers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out-of-pocket costs vary between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/original-medicare-vs-medicare-advantage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In some instances, you\u2019ll save more money with Original Medicare, and in some instances, Medicare Advantage will be cheaper.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-medigap-plans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are Medigap plans?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medigap plans, also called Medicare supplement insurance, help cover costs not paid for by Medicare. Medigaps are provided by private companies and help pay for things like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. This is especially helpful to cover lengthy hospitalizations and skilled nursing rehab stays.
