For many, the cost of prescription drugs can be a large portion of their healthcare spending, making it crucial that they have prescription drug coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs people age, prescriptions become much more commonplace,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.amazon.com\/Alex-Kronk\/e\/B096W9V2VD\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Kronk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MHA, the creator of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthplancritic.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Health Plan Critic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cMany chronic conditions begin to surface in those [older than] 65 years of age. Some common examples are blood thinners for those at risk of pulmonary embolism or AFib, rheumatoid arthritis, and congestive heart failure. Prescription drugs can be extremely expensive, and you will not want to go without some sort of coverage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get Medicare coverage for prescription drugs, you\u2019ll either need to enroll in a Medicare Part D or a Medicare Part C plan with prescription drug coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-medicare-cover-prescriptions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Medicare cover prescriptions?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription drug coverage through Medicare is optional. People with Medicaid or people formerly enrolled in State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs (SPAPs) are automatically enrolled into Part D plans when they age into Medicare. Others must sign up specifically for a prescription drug plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) covers inpatient hospital stays and skilled nursing facilities. Medicare Part B (medical insurance) covers outpatient care, including doctors\u2019 services and tests. Together, Medicare Part A and Part B are known as Original Medicare and are funded by the federal government. This is one way to receive Medicare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way to receive Medicare is through Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage), which offers Medicare Part A, Part B, and often Part D through Medicare-approved private insurance companies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-part-d-plans\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (drug coverage) is also administered by private companies to provide prescription drug benefits. \u201cPart D plans are sold separately from Parts A and B (considered traditional Medicare). Many Part C (or Medicare Advantage plans) also contain drug coverage at no additional cost,\u201d says Kronk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although other parts of Medicare may cover the cost of certain drugs under limited circumstances, the purpose of Medicare Part D is to help lower the prescription drug costs you take regularly at home, which are not covered by Original Medicare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-part-d-plans\/\"><b>Understanding Medicare Part D plans<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"which-prescriptions-are-covered-by-medicare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which prescriptions are covered by Medicare?<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"part-a-drug-coverage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part A drug coverage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part A will only cover drugs administered in an inpatient setting, such as receiving a prescription drug during a hospital stay. If you are prescribed a medication to take at home after being discharged from the hospital, Part A will not cover the costs of that medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"part-b-drug-coverage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part B drug coverage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most drugs that Medicare Part B covers are those administered by a healthcare provider in a doctor\u2019s office, it does cover <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outpatient prescription drugs. Examples of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-part-b-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescriptions covered by Part B<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in some circumstances include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some drugs that are used with durable medical equipment (DME), like an infusion pump or a nebulizer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injectable osteoporosis drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some oral End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transplant or immunosuppressive drugs if Medicare covered the organ transplant<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some oral cancer drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral anti-nausea drugs taken as part of a chemotherapy regimen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some self-administered drugs in hospital outpatient settings<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some vaccines and immunizations are also covered by Part B, including those for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-medicare-cover-flu-shots\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-medicare-cover-pneumonia-shots\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pneumonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Hepatitis B, and COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"part-d-drug-coverage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part D drug coverage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, prescription drugs that are taken regularly at home are covered by Medicare Part D. While most drug plans under Part D will have their own list of covered drugs, known as a formulary, all plans generally include both brand-name and generic drugs, as well as at least two drugs from each of the commonly prescribed drug categories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, Part D plans are required to cover nearly all drugs in Medicare\u2019s Six Protected Classes of drugs. This helps ensure that beneficiaries can get the prescription drugs they need. These classes of drugs include the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Immunosuppressants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: These drugs are commonly used to reduce the strength of the body\u2019s immune system to prevent organ rejection after a transplant.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/antidepressants\/\"><b>Antidepressants<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These drugs are used to help treat depression and anxiety disorders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/antipsychotics\/\"><b>Antipsychotics<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These drugs are used to help treat forms of psychosis.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anticonvulsants\/\"><b>Anticonvulsants<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These drugs are used to treat seizure disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hiv-treatment-and-medications\"><b>Antiretrovirals<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This group of drugs is commonly used to treat HIV\/AIDs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Antineoplastics: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also known as anticancer drugs, antineoplastic drugs are used to treat cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"drugs-that-are-not-covered-by-medicare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs that are not covered by Medicare<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Part D covers prescriptions for a wide variety of medical conditions, not all drugs are covered. Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/Medicare\/Prescription-Drug-Coverage\/PrescriptionDrugCovContra\/RxContracting_FormularyGuidance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">examples<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of prescription drugs that are not covered by Medicare Part D include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brand-name drugs when a generic version is available<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs used to treat anorexia, weight loss, or weight gain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter medications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription vitamins and mineral products, except prenatal vitamins\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs used for the treatment of sexual or erectile dysfunction<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to know that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-formulary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plan\u2019s formulary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might not include the specific drug prescribed to you. In this case, a similar drug should be available; however, when this is not the case, you or your prescriber can request a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/Medicare\/Appeals-and-Grievances\/MedPrescriptDrugApplGriev\/Exceptions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">formulary exception<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If one or more of your prescriptions are not included in your plan\u2019s formulary, you can change your plan during the Open Enrollment Period, which is from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: Medicare supplement plans, like Medigaps, will not provide you with additional drug coverage. Medigaps only help subsidize the cost-sharing associated with Original Medicare. These policies do not include any drug coverage at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-get-medicare-drug-coverage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get Medicare drug coverage<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two ways to get Medicare drug coverage: Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) with drug coverage and stand-alone Medicare drug plans (Part D).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) with drug coverage include all your Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) benefits in addition to Part D (prescription drug coverage) coverage. However, some Medicare Advantage plans do not include drug coverage, so you will want to verify this before enrollment. Additionally, Medicare Advantage plans have a fixed network of providers, unlike Original Medicare plans, which can be used anywhere that accepts Medicare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D plans add drug coverage to Original Medicare plans. You must already be enrolled in either Part A or Part B to get Medicare prescription drug coverage through a Part D plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"eligibility-and-enrollment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eligibility and enrollment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefits.gov\/benefit\/2202\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eligible for Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also eligible for Medicare Part D coverage. This includes those who are 65 years old, those who have received Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits for at least 24 months, and those who have been diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have determined eligibility, you can enroll in a Medicare Part D plan during your seven-month Initial Enrollment Period, which starts three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after the month you turn 65.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those who are eligible because of a disability, your Initial Enrollment Period begins three months before your 25th month of receiving Social Security benefits and ends three months after your 25th month of getting those benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Initial Enrollment Period varies for people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/Medicare\/Eligibility-and-Enrollment\/OrigMedicarePartABEligEnrol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESRD and ALS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on their situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also make changes to your Medicare prescription drug plan during the Open Enrollment Period for Medicare Advantage and Medicare drug plans. The annual Open Enrollment Period begins Oct. 15 and ends Dec. 7. Changes to coverage made during this time will start on Jan. 1 of the following year. Examples of changes that can be made during this period include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing from Original Medicare (Part A or B) to a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing from a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) to Original Medicare (Part A or B)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Switching to a different Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Switching to a different Medicare drug plan (Part D)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enrolling in a Medicare drug plan (Part D) if you are switching from a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) to Original Medicare (Part A or B)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"costs-and-savings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Costs and savings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Medicare Part D does help beneficiaries save on prescription drugs, it\u2019s not free. The specific out-of-pocket <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-part-d-costs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">costs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will vary based on the plan you choose. Each plan will have its own yearly deductible, monthly premium, copayment, coinsurance, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-donut-hole\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coverage gap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, there may be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-part-d-penalty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">late enrollment penalty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Medicare beneficiaries who are not enrolled in Part D or other creditable drug coverage for a continuous period of 63 days or more after their Initial Enrollment Period for Part D coverage ends. This late enrollment penalty is permanently added to your monthly premium for as long as you have Part D coverage unless you qualify for Extra Help or demonstrate that you received bad information from your insurance company about creditable coverage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exact cost of the penalty depends on how long you went without creditable prescription drug coverage after you became eligible for Part D coverage, which may change each year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with Medicare assistance, the cost of prescription drugs can add up. There are, however, additional savings options to further reduce the costs associated with Medicare Part D.
