It&#8217;s estimated that more than 2.9 million people are living with MS worldwide, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS). The majority of people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50 years, but it can occur at any age. MS has a higher incidence rate in women than men.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-multiple-sclerosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is multiple sclerosis?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating condition that affects the central nervous system. It&#8217;s progressive, which means it gets worse over time. It&#8217;s usually recognized by its symptoms, which include extreme fatigue, loss of balance and coordination, visual problems, slurred speech, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/shaking-hands\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tremors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It can also lead to numbness and tingling in the limbs as well as many other complications. Because symptoms affect the entire body, a diagnosis of MS may be difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen someone has Multiple Sclerosis (MS), their immune system attacks their brain and spinal cord,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jacob-hascalovici-md-phd-7763203a\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob Hascalovici<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, the chief medical officer of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clearing.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a digital health platform for people with chronic pain. \u201cDuring these attacks, nerve coatings get damaged, and the nerves cannot relay messages as well, so the body and brain have trouble communicating.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several types of MS, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Clinically isolated syndrome<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The first episode of neurologic symptoms before a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common form of the disease; symptoms are experienced in flare-ups (or relapses) with remission between attacks, where symptoms subside or go away<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Secondary progressive MS (SPMS): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A later stage of the disease, where there is a steady worsening of symptoms between patches of good health<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Primary progressive MS (PPMS): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starts as a steady decline without remission or relapse<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Tumefactive MS<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: An atypical form of the disease that causes &#8220;tumor-like&#8221; lesions<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Pediatric MS: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A rare form of the disease that affects children and adolescents<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnostic criteria for MS vary by provider. Presentation of symptoms, several lesions on a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and evidence of damage to the central nervous system are all considered when making a diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease progresses differently for each person. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msif.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Atlas-3rd-Edition-Epidemiology-report-EN-updated-30-9-20.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlas of MS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2020)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Europe has the highest prevalence rate of MS of all World Health Organization (WHO) regions, with approximately 133 per 100,000 people affected. (NMSS, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average age of MS diagnosis in the United States is 36. (Atlas of MS)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"multiple-sclerosis-statistics-by-condition\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple sclerosis statistics by condition<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common form of multiple sclerosis, relapsing-remitting MS, affects about 85% of all people with MS, although they may eventually develop another form. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurology.org\/doi\/10.1212\/WNL.0000000000200151\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2022)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"multiple-sclerosis-and-overall-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple sclerosis and overall health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe severity of MS can vary from person to person,\u201d Dr. Hascalovici says. \u201cSome people are very deeply impacted by the trajectory of MS, while others are more mildly impacted. Often, the most difficult and trying aspects of MS can be its \u2018invisible\u2019 impacts, meaning fatigue and mood swings, among other symptoms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with MS are at an increased risk of developing mental health conditions, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/stress-vs-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/depression-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalmssociety.org\/managing-ms\/treating-ms\/disease-modifying-therapies\/cost-of-ms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NMSS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Direct healthcare costs associated with MS accounted for approximately $63.3 billion of the total cost of MS. (NMSS)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifty-four percent of direct healthcare costs are for retail prescription medications (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35418457\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2022)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for MS cost about $57,202 to $92,719 per person annually. (NMSS)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"causes-of-multiple-sclerosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes of multiple sclerosis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there is no known cause of MS. However, evidence suggests that MS is an autoimmune disease in which the body&#8217;s own immune system attacks and damages myelin tissue, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalmssociety.org\/What-is-MS\/What-Causes-MS\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have developed several theories related to factors that may contribute to MS, including immune, environmental, genetic, and infection-related factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Immune factors:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some immune system abnormalities have been found in people with MS. These immune system alterations appear to be responsible for the attack on myelin fibers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Environmental factors:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Smoking, a lack of Vitamin D, obesity, and living in areas farther from the equator have been associated with a higher incidence of MS based on prevalence estimates.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Genetic factors:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Studies suggest that people who have a family history of MS are at a greater risk of developing the condition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Infection-related factors:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some researchers believe that some cases of MS may be triggered by a bacterium or virus, including Epstein-Barr, measles, and herpes simplex viruses. However, it\u2019s important to note that MS is not an infectious disease and is not contagious.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"preventing-multiple-sclerosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventing multiple sclerosis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, there are no known ways to prevent multiple sclerosis at this time. Public health organizations, institutions, and governments are working to better understand the condition in order to determine whether it&#8217;s possible to prevent the onset of MS in people at high risk. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalmssociety.org\/understanding-ms\/what-is-ms\/who-gets-ms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Multiple Sclerosis Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are several risk factors that may show an increased susceptibility of developing MS, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low vitamin D levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tobacco use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being female<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being between the ages of 20 and 50<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from the National MS Society, there are several other organizations devoted to continued research of MS. Organizations such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/msfocus.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple Sclerosis Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myelinrepair.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myelin Repair Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acceleratedcure.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accelerated Cure Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mymsaa.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple Sclerosis Association of America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are all devoted to better understanding the condition and thus, developing better treatment options.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treating-multiple-sclerosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating multiple sclerosis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/multiple-sclerosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating MS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involves comprehensive care by a team including healthcare providers such as a neurologist, primary care physician, physical therapist, occupational therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist, social worker, nurses, and pharmacists. Treatment options are available to help reduce the frequency of episodes or the severity of symptoms. This can allow individuals to continue living their lives while minimizing the impact of MS on their daily activities.
