The second indication is reducing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with Type 2 diabetes mellitus with established cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors. You may have seen reports of Trulicity being used for weight loss. This indication is not approved by the FDA, even though use for this purpose may be relatively common. Patients with higher BMI taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher doses of Trulicity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experienced the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as measured in pounds lost from baseline. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">average weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the highest <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dose of 4.5 mg was 10.1 pounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33397768\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AWARD-11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trial concur that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurs most frequently in patients with the highest starting BMI on the highest <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doses of Trulicity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While most patients do lose some weight, there is a chance they will not lose weight or may even gain weight. Most recently, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zepbound\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tirzepatide) has been added to the list of approved GLP-1 drugs for weight loss. Zepbound is unique, however, because it is a combination GLP-1 with a glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP). This dual mechanism has provided <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10697893\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">superior weight loss results<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in many patients as compared to the first GLP-1 drugs. While Trulicity does not have FDA approval for weight loss, some prescribers may still prescribe it and see weight loss results in their patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AWARD-11<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a randomized, controlled trial that evaluated the efficacy and safety of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at multiple doses. This trial was all Type 2 diabetes patients. Patient results were divided by BMI and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dose. In the reporting, patients with the highest BMIs (the most overweight) taking the highest <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dose of Trulicity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (4.5 mg) experienced the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is only approved to be used in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes mellitus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> patients. Many Type 2 diabetes patients also suffer from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obesity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you do not have diabetes and take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there could be serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and adverse events related to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypoglycemia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or low <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood glucose levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It can make you shaky, lower your blood pressure too much, or even make you unconscious. If you are diabetic and taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may experience <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that is okay as long as your healthcare provider monitors the appropriate parameters. If you have ever had an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you should not repeat the treatment. If you have a history of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (specifically <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medullary thyroid carcinoma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiple endocrine neoplasia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the use of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is contraindicated as well. Severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abdominal pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be evaluated as it could be linked to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been linked to dangerously <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood sugar levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though this is rare. In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33397768\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AWARD 11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trial, diabetic patients with a higher BMI taking higher doses of Trulicity saw the highest amount of weight loss. How quickly you lose weight will depend on your adherence to the medication, your starting BMI, your dose, as well as your diet and exercise plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"trulicity-dosage-for-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity dosage for weight loss<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The manufacturer of Trulicity <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trulicity.com\/hcp\/efficacy-weight\/weight-loss-dosing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported its findings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for weight loss after following patients from baseline, or day zero, to 36 weeks.
