It\u2019s no wonder why so many people are looking for tips\u2014including pregnancy-safe sleep aids\u2014on how to sleep soundly when pregnant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that there are more choices than you might realize when it comes to a sleep aid while pregnant. Besides prescribed and over-the-counter medications, there are natural options and lifestyle measures to consider. Here\u2019s what you need to know to finally get some much-needed rest.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant and can\u2019t sleep?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble falling asleep and staying asleep is very common in pregnancy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Much of it has to do with the many bodily discomforts that come with pregnancy. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my experience, it is very rare to find a pregnant patient who sleeps well,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7432323\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greg Marchand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MD, an OB-GYN and founder of Marchand Institute<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThe nausea, the baby&#8217;s movements, the back pain, the muscle aches, the constipation\u2014literally all of it can contribute to difficulty sleeping.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2020<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7432323\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that a whopping 77% of pregnant people experienced sleep disturbances. Of these, about 52% reported frequent night waking, and 20% had trouble falling asleep. Sleep issues increased most in the third trimester, with 26% finding it hard to fall asleep, and 62% waking up in the middle of the night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several common reasons why pregnant people often find it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. In a nutshell, there are just so many changes going on in your body\u2014hormonally, physically, and emotionally\u2014that make it hard to get comfortable and relaxed enough to sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the most common causes of sleep problems in pregnancy include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Frequent bathroom trips:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having to get up to pee multiple times is a common reason for sleeplessness in pregnancy. \u201cEarly on, pregnant women may have<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3220122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary frequency and nocturia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the need to urinate multiple times during the night,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3220122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Felice Gersh, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an OB-GYN and founder\/director of the Integrative Medical Group of Irvine, CA. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Nausea:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nausea is very common in pregnancy, and contrary to popular belief, \u201cmorning sickness,\u201d doesn\u2019t just happen in the morning. Many pregnant individuals are plagued by nighttime nausea.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3220122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 70%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of expectant parents experience nausea, and if the nausea occurs at night or in the early morning, it can wreak havoc on sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Heartburn: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heartburn is also common in pregnancy and tends to be worse at night when you are lying down. Heartburn also tends to get worse the further you are into your pregnancy; between<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3220122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60% to 72%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of pregnant people experience heartburn in their third trimester.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Breathing issues: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal changes and increased<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3220122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swelling of nasal tissues (rhinitis) can affect sleep during pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in hormones can affect breathing, and some pregnant women can develop some degree of sleep apnea\u2014which can interfere with proper restorative sleep,\u201d Dr. Gersh says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Restless leg syndrome: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restless leg syndrome\u2014an uncontrolled need to move and stretch the legs during rest\u2014is another common cause of insomnia and sleep issues in pregnancy. Between<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3220122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27% to 30%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people experience this during pregnancy, particularly during the third trimester.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Leg cramps: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost half of pregnant women experience leg cramps, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanpregnancy.org\/healthy-pregnancy\/pregnancy-health-wellness\/leg-cramps-during-pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Pregnancy Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially starting in the second trimester. Leg cramps may be caused by weight gain, circulation changes, and increased pressure on nerves and blood vessels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Muscle aches and pressure: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aching backs, sore muscles, a growing belly, and babies kicking can all make sleep uncomfortable. If you find yourself tossing and turning, trying to find a comfortable sleep position during pregnancy, you are not the only one. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you progress through pregnancy and your uterus grows, you may have difficulty finding a comfortable position for sleeping,\u201d Dr. Gersh notes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Stress and anxiety: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotions can play a role when it comes to pregnancy insomnia. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant women may develop anxiety about the health of the baby or for themselves \u2026 or they may develop some depression and anxiety when considering the challenges to come and what they may be leaving behind,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Gersh says<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In other words, there are myriad reasons you\u2019re lying awake, counting sheep.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 safe sleep aids for pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy is a time when you need to take extra care to not take any medications that could harm your growing baby or cause pregnancy complications. Some common sleep aids are unsafe during pregnancy, but that doesn\u2019t mean there is nothing you can take to help you sleep. You definitely have options. Just note that you should always consult with your healthcare provider before taking any medications for sleep.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Benadryl<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although antihistamines aren\u2019t specifically meant to treat sleep issues, they can make you drowsy, so many people use them for insomnia. Melatonin is something that Dr. Marchand has found to be safe and effective in his patients. \u201cOver the last 10 years, I have found melatonin to be effective and safe, so that is something I recommend to all pregnant women who suffer from insomnia,\u201d he shares.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are interested in taking melatonin, you should speak to your healthcare provider, for medical advice about whether it\u2019s a good idea, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/melatonin-dosage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what amount of melatonin you can safely take<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are finding that your stress, depression, or anxiety are so intense that you are finding it difficult to fall asleep, you should consider talking to your healthcare provider. It\u2019s common to struggle with mental health during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all antidepressants are considered safe during pregnancy, but some are.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are first-line treatments for depression and anxiety\u2014not sleep treatments, per se. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, taking prescribed antidepressants can help you feel more emotionally balanced and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unisom.com\/en-us\/sleep-aids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can in turn help you fall asleep more easily<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unisom.com\/en-us\/sleep-aids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACOG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says that most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not known to increase the risk of birth defects, but that research is ongoing. Some providers may recommend waiting until after your first trimester is over. Additionally, some of these medications can be activating and inhibit sleep, such as sertraline. You should speak to your healthcare team to figure out the best choice for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Treatments for pregnancy discomforts<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are experiencing one of the many pregnancy discomforts that are making a good night\u2019s sleep feel unattainable, you might want to consider treating the underlying symptoms rather than seeking a pregnancy sleep aid. While not specifically for sleep disorders, these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/safe-medication-during-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy-safe medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and dietary supplements can help you get more rest.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restless leg syndrome is often linked to low iron or pregnancy anemia, so taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/folic-acid\"><b>folic acid<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/iron\"><b>iron supplements<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may help relieve your symptoms. You\u2019ll also want to talk to your provider about safety while breastfeeding if you plan to nurse your child.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzodiazepines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/benzodiazepines#:~:text=Most%20benzodiazepines%20are%20available%20generically,prescription%20of%20the%20brand%20name.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzodiazepines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a type of drug used to treat anxiety disorders and are also often prescribed for insomnia. But they are usually not considered safe to use in pregnancy. \u201cBenzodiazepines like Valium (diazepam) and Xanax (alprazolam) are definitely unsafe,\u201d Dr. Marchand says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzodiazepines cross the placenta and may have harmful effects on babies including an increased risk of preterm birth and low birth weight. Some babies born to parents who take benzodiazepines during pregnancy have what is described as \u201cfloppy baby syndrome.\u201d Babies may also have benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms at birth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambien (zolpidem)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ambien\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambien<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a commonly prescribed sleep medication. There is limited knowledge about how it affects pregnancy, Dr. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marchand explains, and it\u2019s for this reason that most doctors do not recommend it.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unisom.com\/en-us\/sleep-aids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA warns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that taking Ambien in the third trimester is particularly risky, as it may cause babies to experience respiratory depression as well as increased sedation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ambien-side-effects\/\"><b>Ambien side effects<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barbiturates and tranquilizers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although substances like<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/barbiturates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">barbiturates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and tranquilizers may be used at times when you are having trouble sleeping, they should not be used at any time during pregnancy, Dr. Gersh warns. \u201cThey come with concerns over the long term health effects on a baby,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol and marijuana<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol is also a substance you should never consume while pregnant, says Dr. Gersh, even if you think it will help you sleep.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unisom.com\/en-us\/sleep-aids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause growth problems for babies and can negatively affect their developing brains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some expectant parents might consider marijuana as a way to get some sleep, but Dr. Gersh advises against this as well.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unisom.com\/en-us\/sleep-aids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warns against the use of recreational or medicinal marijuana during pregnancy. That includes CBD products\u2014the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unisom.com\/en-us\/sleep-aids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA warns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there may be serious risks to use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural remedies for insomnia during pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to treating insomnia during pregnancy, Dr. Gersh recommends starting by considering at-home remedies and good sleep hygiene practices before turning to a pharmaceutical sleep aid for pregnancy. That said, not all natural-sounding remedies are recommended, says Dr. Gersh.
