Trying to figure out the cause of these sleepless nights can be tiresome (no pun intended!), but sometimes, it\u2019s as simple as reading the labels on your prescription medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/sleep-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep deprivation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can wreak havoc on your physical and mental well-being. That\u2019s why it\u2019s critical to understand how drug-induced insomnia impacts your health and what you can do to get a better night\u2019s sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-drug-induced-insomnia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is drug-induced insomnia?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDrug-induced insomnia is just what it sounds like\u2014insomnia, or difficulty sleeping, caused by taking certain medications,\u201d says<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brynna Connor, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a family medicine specialist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty falling or staying asleep, or getting good quality sleep is considered insomnia, according to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health-topics\/insomnia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If it occurs for less than three months, it\u2019s called short-term insomnia. Chronic, or long-term, insomnia, occurs three or more nights a week and lasts for 3 months or longer. Drug-induced insomnia can be either short-term or chronic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While drug-induced insomnia is sometimes caused by a straightforward causal relationship between the interactions of a specific drug with your body\u2019s neurotransmitters or receptors that control your sleep, the relationship between a drug and the side effect of insomnia is often a bit more complex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFactors beyond the chemical components of a specific drug and their known side effects that can contribute to drug-induced insomnia include pre-existing conditions or diseases, sleep disorders, sleep patterns, and other indirect effects from medications,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/doctorconnor.com\">Dr. Connor<\/a> explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, this condition is commonly observed in people with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and pulmonary diseases, as some of the therapeutics to treat those chronic diseases can cause insomnia, says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carlearaweiss.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carleara Weiss, Ph.D,, MS, RN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Aeroflow Sleep\u2019s sleep science adviser and a postdoctoral fellow in sleep and circadian rhythms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"9-types-of-medications-that-cause-insomnia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9 types of medications that cause insomnia\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/a-z-topics\/insomnia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> insomnia is one of the most commonly reported sleep problems. Because a wide variety of medications can cause insomnia, drug-induced insomnia can be quite common. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/sleep-survey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare\u2019s sleep survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 5% of respondents reported insomnia is a side effect of their medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDrug-induced insomnia can be a consequence of stimulants and certain classes of medications,\u201d Weiss says. These drugs cause insomnia for different reasons including their mechanism of action, dose timing, and length of treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of the more common medications that cause insomnia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#cold-allergy-med\">Cold and allergy medicine<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#blood-pressure\">Blood pressure medications<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#pain-relievers\">Pain relievers<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#antidepressants\">Antidepressants<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#smoking-cessation-drugs\">Smoking cessation drugs<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#corticosteroids\">Corticosteroids<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#asthma-copd\">Asthma and COPD medicines<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#stimulants\">Stimulants<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#dopamine\">Dopamine agonists<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 id=\"1-cold-and-allergy-drugs\">1. Cold and allergy drugs<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter (OTC) decongestants and allergy medications work wonders to help reduce the sniffles, sneezing, and a runny nose. But the main ingredients in some of these formulas can also cause jitteriness and insomnia. This includes phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/familydoctor.org\/decongestants-otc-relief-for-congestion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Family Physicians.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of cold and allergy treatments that might contain these medications include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vicks-dayquil-cough\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DayQuil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sudafed-sinus-congestion-24hr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudafed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin-d-12-hour\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin-D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allegra-d-allergy-congestion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegra-D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re taking cold or allergy meds on a short-term basis, you can probably get by with a few restless nights. But if you take decongestants regularly, talk with your provider about a different medicine that may make it easier to sleep. Blood pressure medications<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood pressure medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ace-inhibitors-vs-beta-blockers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers and ACE inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are prescribed to treat hypertension and congestive heart failure. Additionally, beta blockers can also be used in the treatment of tremors and angina (and prevention of migraine).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beta blockers lower blood pressure by blocking the hormone adrenaline. This helps the blood vessels open up, according to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/high-blood-pressure\/changes-you-can-make-to-manage-high-blood-pressure\/types-of-blood-pressure-medications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dr. Connor says blood pressure drugs like ACE inhibitors might cause insomnia because they induce dry cough, leg cramps, restless leg syndrome, and other symptoms that in many people can interrupt sleep. Talk to your provider if you\u2019re experiencing sleep disturbances from taking a beta blocker or ACE inhibitor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-pain-medicines\">3. Pain medicines<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter (OTC) pain medicines mostly fall into two categories: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and acetaminophen. Examples of NSAIDs include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil\/Motrin (ibuprofen)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bayer-aspirin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bayer (aspirin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aleve\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aleve (naproxen)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The most common acetaminophen drug is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen-extra-strength\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs, especially in higher doses, can cause stomach irritation, abdominal pain, acid, bloating, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal problems. Because of this, some people experience disrupted sleep when taking NSAIDs. If you\u2019re taking an NSAID, consider a lower dose or taking the medicine with a meal. Also, talk to your doctor about other OTC pain relievers that may not cause GI issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/excedrin-migraine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excedrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is used for headaches, contains acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine. This combination does an excellent job of stopping headaches, but the addition of 65 mg of caffeine, can wreak havoc on your sleep if you take it too close to bedtime. Examples of SSRIs include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zoloft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoloft (sertraline)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prozac\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac (fluoxetine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/celexa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celexa (citalopram)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/paxil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxil (paroxetine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lexapro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro (escitalopram)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluvoxamine-maleate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luvox (fluvoxamine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wellbutrin-sr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin (bupropion)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI). It works by keeping the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine available to the brain\u2019s neurons for longer, according to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2009\/018644s039s040.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). One of the main side effects is insomnia\u2014even more than SSRIs\u2014due to increased levels of dopamine and norepinephrine. Talk to your provider if you\u2019re experiencing sleep disturbances from taking antidepressant medicines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-smoking-cessation-drugs\">5. Smoking cessation drugs<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicotine replacement treatments are helpful when you\u2019re trying to quit smoking, but they may also be interfering with your sleep. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/smoking-cessation-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking cessation drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also called nicotine replacement therapy, include patches, gum, inhaler, nasal spray, and lozenges. Examples of smoking cessation drugs that may cause sleep issues include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nicotrol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicotrol Inhaler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nicotrol-ns\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicotrol NS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nicoderm-cq\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NicoDerm CQ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nicorette\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicorette<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They all contain nicotine, which can disrupt sleep. If possible, avoid wearing a nicotine patch while you sleep, or close to bedtime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, your doctor may recommend an oral medication for smoking cessation. According to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/healthy\/stay-away-from-tobacco\/guide-quitting-smoking\/prescription-drugs-to-help-you-quit-smoking.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Cancer Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, trouble sleeping is a common side effect of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bupropion-hcl-er-smoking-det\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyban (bupropion)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Talk to your provider if you\u2019re experiencing sleep disturbances from smoking cessation treatments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-corticosteroids\">6. They are prescribed for various conditions that involve inflammation of the muscles and blood vessels, such as rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis, lupus, and allergic reactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, because corticosteroids closely resemble cortisol, they can impair your ability to fall asleep, especially if you take them at night. Cortisol is a hormone produced naturally by your adrenal glands that functions as your main stress hormone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One way to get around interrupted sleep is to talk to your doctor about taking the entire dose in the morning or using the smallest dose possible. Side effects like insomnia are more common in prolonged use and at higher doses, according to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/4812-corticosteroids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-asthma-and-copd-medicines\">7. Asthma and COPD medicines<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to a group of lung diseases (including emphysema and chronic bronchitis) that cause obstructed airflow from the lungs.
