{"id":4996,"date":"2019-07-17T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=4996"},"modified":"2024-02-21T09:20:54","modified_gmt":"2024-02-21T14:20:54","slug":"upset-stomach-pregnancy-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/upset-stomach-pregnancy-treatment\/","title":{"rendered":"The do&#8217;s and don&#8217;ts of treating nausea during pregnancy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most women who have ever been pregnant are familiar with that queasy, lingering nausea that comes with carrying a fetus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNausea during pregnancy is one of the most common and uncomfortable symptoms that impacts about 70% of pregnant women,\u201d says Janelle Luk, MD, medical director and co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.generationnextfertility.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generation Next Fertility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New York City.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes nausea during pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNausea is linked to the pregnancy hormone (human chorionic gonadotropin [or HCG] hormone), which is released when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining,\u201d Dr. Luk says. It\u2019s also linked to elevated estrogen and progesterone levels during pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What week of pregnancy does nausea start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/Patients\/FAQs\/Morning-Sickness-Nausea-and-Vomiting-of-Pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">usually most severe during early pregnancy within the first trimester<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which includes the first 13 weeks of pregnancy), and may even be associated with vomiting. Luckily, these sickness symptoms should start to disappear in the second trimester after HCG hormone levels have peaked and no longer interfere with your daily life. Unfortunately for some women, pregnancy nausea can last the duration of the pregnancy. You\u2019ve probably heard the term \u201cmorning sickness,\u201d but that\u2019s a misnomer. It should really be called \u201call day sickness,\u201d because the truth is that it can strike at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/morning-sickness\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20375254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any time of the day or night<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And it feels awful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is, the typical nausea and vomiting related to hormone changes experienced during pregnancy is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanpregnancy.org\/pregnancy-health\/morning-sickness-during-pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unlikely to harm the fetus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can\u2019t keep any food or fluids down due to severe nausea and vomiting\u2014a condition known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperemesis gravidum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014you should seek medical attention. If left untreated, it has the potential to be harmful to the developing fetus. More on this in a bit. Aside from this very rare scenario, pregnancy nausea and vomiting is harmless. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To the fetus.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the pregnant woman, it\u2019s a relentless queasiness that makes you want to hide in bed all day (as long as there\u2019s a bathroom nearby). Here are 9 remedies you can try.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9 lifestyle changes for nausea during pregnancy\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside of pregnancy, feelings of nausea might have you running to the pharmacy for an over-the-counter (OTC) solution; however, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/taking-medicine-while-pregnant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug choice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires more thought when you\u2019re pregnant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, pregnant people are able to manage their nausea on their own, according to Rebecca Berens, MD, lactation consultant and board-certified family medicine physician at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vidafamilydpc.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vida Family Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Houston. Here\u2019s a list of natural remedies to try if you experience nausea while pregnant:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Eat small meals or bland foods.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cHome remedies with small, frequent, bland snacks, such as saltine crackers or dry toast [may be enough],\u201d says Dr. Berens. \u201cHard candies such as peppermints, sour candies, and commercial products such as \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/threelollies.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preggie Pops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 can also be effective.\u201d Avoid skipping meals and having an empty stomach, which can make nausea worse.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Try ginger products.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Products containing ginger are known to be helpful, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ginger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ginger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> candies and ginger teas,\u201d Dr. Berens says. For nausea relief, it may help to try products like ginger ale).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Limit acidic or spicy foods.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> During pregnancy, the hormone progesterone causes the esophageal sphincter to relax, increasing the odds of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanfordchildrens.org\/en\/topic\/default?id=pregnancy-and-heartburn-134-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> heartburn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and acidic foods like citrus fruit or spicy foods like hot peppers can make heartburn worse.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Avoid stuffy rooms or strong odors.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Family nurse practitioner and owner of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stauntonprimarycare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staunton Primary Care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Cincinnati, Ciara Staunton says that avoiding nausea triggers like heat, humidity, stuffy rooms and odors (perfume, chemicals, food, and smoke) is important.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Get enough rest and sleep in the correct position. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quickly changing positions and not getting enough rest\/sleep may also aggravate symptoms of morning sickness, says Staunton. Don\u2019t forget to get some exercise. It can help with nausea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Wait to lie down after eating.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Lying down soon after eating and lying on the left side are additional potentially aggravating factors,\u201d Staunton says. She explains that this could slow down digestion and keep food in your stomach for longer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Wear anti-nausea wristbands.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Using acupressure bands like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11277163\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sea-Bands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can decrease the severity and frequency of nausea and vomiting. You can also try homeopathic remedies like acupressure, but be sure to seek a practitioner who has experience treating pregnant patients.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/10-tips-to-survive-nausea-during-pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Change the timing of your prenatal vitamins<\/b><\/a><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your prenatal is making you feel sick, consider taking the vitamin at a different time. For example, if you normally take them in the morning, switch the timing up to the afternoon or evening. Also, don\u2019t take your prenatal on an empty stomach.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/morning-sickness\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20375260\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Try alternative treatments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Although not scientifically proven, some people have reported relief from alternative therapies such as acupuncture, hypnosis, aromatherapy and others.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can I take for nausea during pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTC treatments<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our experts say if those interventions fail to ease your nausea, it\u2019s time to talk to your provider. There are OTC and prescription medications that may help. The following treatment options are safe for pregnancy nausea:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vitamin B6:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your best bet for nausea, Staunton says, is vitamin B6 supplements: \u201cVitamin B6, 50\u2013100 mg orally once daily, is nontoxic and may help some patients.\u201d If your prenatal vitamin already contains vitamin B6, which is also known as pyridoxine, consult your healthcare provider before taking additional supplements. Too much vitamin B6 can cause nerve damage and numbness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Emetrol:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The over-the-counter syrup is considered safe to take during pregnancy. Take 1-2 tablespoons in the morning when you wake up, or if you are vomiting, take 1-2 tablespoons every 15 minutes until the vomiting stops. Do not exceed five doses in an hour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Unisom: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Berens says that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/unisom-sleepmelts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unisom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (doxylamine 25mg) is another drug that is safe and sometimes effective in treating nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diclegis: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA has approved a prescription medication for use during pregnancy that is a combination of Vitamin B6 and doxylamine called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/diclegis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diclegis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is the only FDA approved medication for treating nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe same effect is possible, and much cheaper, by buying [Vitamin B6 and doxylamine] over the counter,\u201d says Dr. Berens. \u201cMany physicians recommend trying Vitamin B6 alone first, then adding doxylamine, which is also a sleep aid, if Vitamin B6 alone is not effective. The sedating side effects of doxylamine may not be desired by a woman in her first trimester who is already exhausted!\u201d One way to potentially avoid the unwanted sedating effects of doxylamine\u2014but also to reap the anti-nausea benefits!\u2014is taking it first at bedtime and waiting to see if it reduces daytime nausea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/324672.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not totally sure why the Unisom\/Vitamin B6 combination works to treat morning sickness. It might be because the drug combination blocks the neurotransmitters that send nausea signals in your brain. Or it could be that it simply disrupts your bodily processes that lead to vomiting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be tempted to try CBD or cannabis to help with nausea during pregnancy, since these products are popping up everywhere and known to help with stomach issues. However, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/what-you-should-know-about-using-cannabis-including-cbd-when-pregnant-or-breastfeeding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> FDA strongly recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against using CBD <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> THC during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription medications for nausea during pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some women experience extreme nausea and vomiting during pregnancy that can\u2019t be controlled with dietary changes or OTC medications; this is known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperemesis gravidarum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If this is the case for you, talk to your provider to first make sure no other medical conditions are involved and to explore other prescription medications that might help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28641304\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rare, occurring only in approximately 0.3-3% of pregnancies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, hyperemesis gravidarum can cause such extreme nausea that it\u2019s difficult to keep anything down, including fluids, resulting in weight loss and extreme dehydration. It can also make it hard to get enough nutrients for a growing baby. Per Dr. Berens, \u201cDehydration associated with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperemesis gravidarum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2026 can be serious and requires urgent treatment.\u201d Seek medical treatment if you are experiencing severe nausea or vomiting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many prescription medication options available to treat severe cases of extreme nausea and vomiting, but unfortunately clinical trials often exclude pregnant women, which makes it difficult to fully understand if potential harm exists when used during pregnancy.
