Catching asthma early can help your pets live their lives to the fullest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"prevalence\">Asthma in dogs<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma can occur in dogs of all breeds and sizes, but some breeds are more likely to have asthma than others.\u00a0 \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small dog breeds seem to be more susceptible to asthma than larger breeds,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chyrle Bonk, DVM, a veterinarian working with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hepper.com\/about-hepper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hepper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More specifically, Megan Conrad, BVMS, a veterinarian with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/helloralphie.com\/meet-our-vets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hello Ralphie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says: \u201cSome statistics indicate that small and toy breed dogs, as well as flat-faced breeds, can be more prone to this condition.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their particular genetic makeup and shape of their airway makes these types of dogs more likely to have asthma or other respiratory issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"causes\">Causes<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While asthma in humans can have various causes, in dogs, asthma attacks are usually triggered by external irritants.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma in dogs is also called allergic bronchitis, as it\u2019s an allergic reaction to an environmental substance. The allergen causes inflammation in the dog\u2019s respiratory system,\u201d says Dr. Conrad. When the airway muscles constrict, dogs can have trouble breathing or being as active as they otherwise would be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your dog may have allergies that affect their skin, but when it comes to asthma, it \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an allergic condition caused by allergens that are inhaled,\u201d Dr. Bonk says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common triggers include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cigarette smoke\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air fresheners\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perfumes\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleaning chemicals\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dust<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mold\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can help your pet avoid most irritants if you are aware of them. However, some are unavoidable. It\u2019s important to know what specifically triggers your dog so you can be prepared.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"symptoms\">Does my dog have asthma?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to in humans, asthma in dogs usually presents with respiratory symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look out for the following common signs of asthma in your dog:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coughing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid or labored breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy panting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma attack symptoms might include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudden difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of energy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bluish tongue and gums<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any difficulty breathing in your dog warrants immediate veterinary care,\u201d Dr. Conrad advises.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"diagnosis\">Diagnosis<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think your dog might be asthmatic, make an appointment with your veterinarian right away. Your vet will want to do a full physical examination to assess your pet\u2019s health. \u201cDiagnosing asthma in dogs is usually done by ruling out other causes of the signs your dog is showing,\u201d Dr. Bonk says. \u201cA thorough exam and history will be done as well as possibly blood work to check for parasites. X-rays are also often done to visualize any changes in the lungs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some serious conditions with similar symptoms your doctor will rule out include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart disease\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collapsing trachea\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heartworm disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laryngeal paralysis\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to notice and report any changes in your pet\u2019s health as well as any environmental factors that might contribute to respiratory issues. Stay up to date on immunizations and heartworm testing so you can maintain your pet\u2019s overall health and easily rule out these preventable conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"dog-asthma-attacks\">Asthma attacks: What to do<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma attacks can be scary for the pet and owner. \u201cAttacks are handled by keeping your dog as calm as possible, removing the irritant if possible, and contacting your vet,\u201d says Dr. Bonk. If your dog has a mild attack at home, Dr. Conrad says you can treat it with an inhaler or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nebulizer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nebulizer<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that has been previously prescribed. For severe asthma attack symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. Make sure you have your vet\u2019s phone number handy and a list of potential emergency vets for after hours in case you need assistance with your dog\u2019s asthma attacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat asthma in dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Properly managing asthma is very important for ensuring your pet has their best quality of life. \u201cAsthma can cause permanent damage to the lungs if it isn\u2019t treated properly. Severe attacks can cause death if a dog doesn\u2019t get enough oxygen,\u201d says Dr. Bonk. An asthma treatment plan usually includes two parts: prevention and medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"prevention\">Prevention<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In both humans and dogs, prevention is better than managing frequent attacks. \u201cAsthma in dogs is best treated by preventing attacks,\u201d says Dr. Bonk. Dr. Conrad recommends taking the following steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid known irritants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a HEPA filter in your house<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t smoke around your dog or use a wood-burning fireplace<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use dust-free cat litter if you have cats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wash your dog\u2019s bedding frequently<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid burning incense or scented candles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be mindful of cleaning products that might exacerbate your dog\u2019s asthma symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If outdoor allergens are a trigger, try to exercise your dog at times when pollen counts are low.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"treatment\">Medication<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf your dog knowingly has asthma, they may be prescribed an inhaler that will relax their airways,\u201d says Dr. Bonk. Common inhalant medications include fluticasone propionate, known by the brand name Flovent, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/albuterol-sulfate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">albuterol sulfate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also called by its brand name, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ventolin-hfa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ventolin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These medications can be used as a daily preventative inhaler, like in the case of fluticasone, or in the case of albuterol, as a fast acting rescue inhaler during an asthma attack. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note: You should never use a human inhaler on your pet as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/albuterol-sulfate\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and medication may be toxic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might be difficult to get your dog to use an inhaler. \u201cYour vet may also prescribe anti-inflammatories to decrease inflammation in the lungs to help your dog breathe easier and decrease permanent damage to the lungs,\u201d says Dr. Bonk. Antihistamines like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or steroids like<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prednisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might also help prevent attacks. While some anti-inflammatory steroids or antihistamines may be available for humans or over-the-counter, always consult your pet\u2019s veterinarian before starting a new medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"costs\">How much does dog asthma treatment cost?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma treatment in dogs is mostly about prevention, but you should plan to budget for visits to the vet and medications. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/singlecare-for-pet-prescriptions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a way to save on asthma meds that are prescribed to both humans and pets like bronchodilators, antihistamines, and steroids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might also consider pet insurance for your animals.
