Inside the plant\u2019s gnarly, knobby roots (called rhizomes) are body-boosting antioxidants (molecules that ward off cell damage), anti-inflammatories, and germ-busting antimicrobial agents. Studies suggest these good-for-you substances can do everything from fighting nausea and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-crp-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to warding off infection and pain\u2014and maybe even cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ginger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ginger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014known in plant terms as Zingiber officinale\u2014is in the same plant family as another spice superstar, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/turmeric-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turmeric<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ginger has been used in Eastern medicine since the 9th century. It\u2019s loaded with compounds called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shogaols and gingerols<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014with 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol seeming particularly beneficial\u2014that have a range of medicinal properties. One caveat: Before you take ginger supplements, or, really, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/diet-supplements-can-interact-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any new supplement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, talk to your healthcare provider to confirm it\u2019s safe for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also a good idea to make sure whatever ginger supplement you take has third party oversight. Supplements are not highly regulated. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concentration of ginger can vary widely between fresh ginger root, pills, extracts, and powder\u2014and it\u2019s not standardized,\u201d explains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heather Moday, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an immunologist, functional medicine specialist and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Immunotype Breakthrough<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cTherefore, outside of ingesting ginger root on its own and using fresh ginger tea, one should use supplements that carry a National Science Foundation (NSF) or U.S. Pharmacopeia stamp on the label.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herbs are pharmacologically active and can positively or negatively impact your health. Positive effects may include improvement of disease-specific outcomes. Negative effects may include adverse side effects and drug-herb interactions. The U.S. Joint Commission now requires that herb and supplement use be recorded and reconciled as part of the medication list in the hospital medical record.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"12-health-benefits-of-ginger\">12 health benefits of ginger<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ginger isn\u2019t a cure-all and is not a substitute for bona fide medical treatment. However, research has shown it may have some health-boosting properties.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-ease-nausea-and-vomiting\">1. Ease nausea and vomiting<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ginger has long been used to combat symptoms of nausea and vomiting, although researchers aren\u2019t sure why it works. It could be that ginger helps <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6341159\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speed up gastrointestinal motility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reducing the likelihood that food will languish in the stomach and produce indigestion, bloating, gas, an upset stomach, and nausea. One other theory is that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ginger may centrally affect serotonin receptor subtypes to fight nausea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/cancernursingonline\/Fulltext\/2019\/11000\/Does_the_Oral_Administration_of_Ginger_Reduce.15.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">literature review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking at 10 studies using ginger capsules and ginger powder in easing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) found that ginger was \u201csignificantly effective\u201d in controlling acute CINV on day 1 after chemotherapy, but not effective against nausea and vomiting after day 1 of chemotherapy. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27644633\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking at ginger and the nausea that can accompany chemotherapy found no benefit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2304-8158\/7\/4\/50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking at the effects of ginger in decreasing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/upset-stomach-pregnancy-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">morning sickness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in pregnant women, researchers found that consuming one gram of fresh ginger root for four days \u201csignificantly\u201d decreased nausea and vomiting in the women with no harm to their unborn babies (still, check with your doctor before taking any medication, supplement, or herb during pregnancy).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ginger also seems effective in reducing nausea from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/motion-sickness-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">motion sickness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7048153\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involving naval cadets who were unaccustomed to sailing in rough seas, those who took one gram of powdered ginger root were less likely to experience vomiting and cold sweating\u2014hallmarks of seasickness\u2014than those who took a placebo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI get seasick easily and I take 500-1,000 mg of ginger about 15-30 minutes before going out on a boat,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalsecretsmd.com\/about\/about-dr-kaveh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Kaveh, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an anesthesiologist and integrative medicine specialist in the San Francisco Bay area. \u201cIn a pinch, you can also peel an inch or two of fresh ginger root and chew or suck on it before a nauseating event.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-relieve-pain\">2. Relieve pain<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ginger is thought to reduce pain in a number of ways, including by blocking prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are a naturally occurring substance that increases inflammation and plays a role in the cramping of smooth muscle. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30545531\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study of young women with menstrual pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (called dysmenorrhea) found that those who took capsulized ginger experienced as much pain relief as those who took Novafen, a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory. In another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5356382\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study of those undergoing dental surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 500 mg of ginger powder taken orally at regular intervals reduced pain as effectively as 400 mg of ibuprofen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-lower-blood-sugar-in-people-with-type-2-diabetes\">3. Lower blood sugar in people with Type 2 diabetes<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2352618115000086\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review of four high-quality randomized clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who were given 1,600-3,000 mg of ginger powder daily for 8-12 weeks, lowered their fasting blood sugar levels as well as their HbA1C levels (a measurement of blood sugar used to diagnose diabetes; a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-a1c-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">normal level<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is below 5.7%) when compared to people who were given a placebo. Researchers aren\u2019t entirely sure why ginger seems to be beneficial, but one theory is that ginger may indirectly suppress factors that lead to problems with glucose control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-blood-glucose-levels\/\"><b>What are normal blood glucose levels?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-improve-brain-health\">4. Improve brain health<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/ecam\/2012\/383062\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study of 60 middle-aged women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found those taking 400-800 mg of ginger once a day for two months had better brain functioning (for example, better attention and memory) compared to women who took a placebo. Similar findings were found in a study of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/ecam\/2019\/5054395\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post-menopausal women taking a ginger supplement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for three months.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-improve-migraine-pain\">5. Improve migraine pain<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29768938\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study of people with episodic migraine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (defined as one to six <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/new-migraine-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> attacks per month) found that those treated with 400 mg of ginger extract in addition to an anti-inflammatory delivered intravenously (IV) had significantly less pain at .5, 1.5 and 2 hours post treatment than those who only got the IV anti-inflammatory medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-reduce-arthritis-inflammation\">6. Reduce arthritis inflammation<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4936657\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involving older people with osteoarthritis of the knee were given either a 500 mg capsule of ginger powder daily for three months or a placebo containing only starch. At the end of the three months, those taking the ginger powder had lower levels of inflammatory markers (molecules that indicate inflammation in the body) in their blood than those in the placebo group. The researchers suspect that the anti-inflammatory properties of ginger\u2014or more specifically, the gingerols and shogaols compounds in ginger\u2014decrease the inflammatory factors involved in osteoarthritis. Other research looking at ginger\u2019s effect on rheumatoid arthritis (an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/arthritis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that stems from a malfunction in the immune system) has shown promise, but scientists note that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mskcc.org\/cancer-care\/integrative-medicine\/herbs\/ginger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more data is needed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Decrease body fat<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6992804\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one small study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 80 obese women consumed either 100 mg of steamed ginger ethanolic extract (which is higher in 6-shogaol than other ginger products) in a capsule or a placebo over a 12-week period. At the end of the study period, mean body weight, body mass index (BMI) and body fat were significantly lower in the group who took the ginger extract.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-reduce-cholesterol-levels\">8. Reduce cholesterol levels<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a very small <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18813412\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 45 people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/high-cholesterol-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high cholesterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were given 3 grams of ginger divided into three doses per day. Another 40 people with high cholesterol were given a placebo. At the end of the 45-day study, both groups saw a reduction in triglycerides, cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins (LDL, the \u201clousy\u201d cholesterol) and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). Prevent infection<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27127591\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has shown that ginger extract, used in a mouthwash, can stop the formation of certain oral fungi, especially those caused by Candida yeast. Of note, most candida yeast in the mouth is insignificant and asymptomatic. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24047828\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that 10% ginger extract can fight against other bacteria commonly found in the mouth, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S. mutans<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E. faecalis, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the latter of which can also be found in the gut and genital tract.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"10-lower-blood-pressure\">10. Lower blood pressure<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ptr.6362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review of six clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with more than 300 study subjects found that the use of ginger can lower both systolic (the top number in a blood pressure reading) and diastolic (the bottom number) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/blood-pressure-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But ginger only seemed to be beneficial when study subjects were younger than 50 years of age and used the ginger at a dose of more than 3 grams a day for fewer than eight weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-pressure-levels\/\"><b>What are normal blood pressure levels?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"11-improve-muscle-recovery-after-intense-exercise\">11. Improve muscle recovery after intense exercise<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found that when study subjects were given 4 grams of ginger for five days prior to intense exercise, their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25787877\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscles recovered faster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than those in the placebo group, although the ginger had no effect on preventing muscle damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"12-reduce-heavy-menstrual-bleeding\">12. Reduce heavy menstrual bleeding<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study on high school girls with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25298352\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heavy menstrual bleeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that when the girls were given ginger, they experienced significantly less blood loss than those taking a placebo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ginger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ginger coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-potential-benefits-of-ginger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other potential benefits of ginger<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are other areas where ginger shows promise, but the science is still lacking. Overall, more clinical data, especially in humans, is needed to assess ginger\u2019s impact on:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sperm count and motility:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/paper\/EFFECT-OF-GINGER-SUPPLEMENTS-ON-SOME-REPRODUCTIVE-Arabia\/946d8bafbd96da68dc8abd36340588a35caeba6f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study on mice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that when male mice ate a diet supplemented with ginger, the quantity and quality of their sperm increased compared to the mice that received a placebo.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Skin irritation:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0041008X16302423\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted on mice found that 6-shogaol, a compound in ginger with anti-inflammatory effects, can help treat and prevent the skin irritation that comes from allergies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cough:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3604064\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treated smooth muscle with ginger powder, it relaxed after 30 minutes. This finding could have important implications for people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/asthma-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other airway diseases.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cancer cell growth:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2241638\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking at ovarian cancer cells in vitro (aka, in a laboratory test tube) found that ginger inhibited the growth of cancer cells and impacted their blood supply, which, in turn, decreased their growth. At high doses (more than 4 grams per day for adults, say experts at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/herb\/ginger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mount Sinai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and only 1 gram for pregnant women), ginger can cause:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heartburn<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritation of the mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These side effects can be reduced if you take ginger in capsule form and\/or take it with meals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-it-safe-to-take-ginger-every-day\">Is it safe to take ginger every day?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most people, the answer is yes. While anyone wanting to take ginger should speak with their healthcare provider first, getting your doctor\u2019s okay is particularly important for people with certain conditions or who take certain drugs, including people who:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood thinners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or have bleeding disorders. Ginger can increase the risk of bleeding.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take medications for diabetes. Coupled with medication, ginger may lower blood sugar too much.
