Prep with these tips so COPD won\u2019t hold you back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have COPD, or know someone who does, you know that oxygen support is likely needed for at least some daily activities. And that means a portable unit\u2014which isn\u2019t exactly a perfect travel buddy. But that doesn\u2019t mean it should hold you back from traveling with COPD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-root=\"1\" data-sheets-value=\"{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-sheets-userformat=\"{&quot;2&quot;:6849,&quot;3&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:0},&quot;9&quot;:1,&quot;10&quot;:2,&quot;12&quot;:0,&quot;14&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:0},&quot;15&quot;:&quot;Arial&quot;}\" data-sheets-formula=\"=CONCATENATE(R[0]C[-2],R[0]C[-3],R[0]C[-1])\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD,\u00a0 actually covers a variety of other lung diseases in the same category, including emphysema, asthma, and chronic bronchitis. Its hallmark symptom is an inability to breathe alongside frequent coughing, wheezing, and chest pain or tightness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTravel is very possible for people with COPD in many different stages,\u201d says Bill Clark, the senior director of community engagement at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.copdfoundation.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COPD Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt isn\u2019t particularly good for people who are full oxygen users, but for everyone else, it\u2019s possible. You just have to plan and plan well ahead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how to travel with COPD on major types of transportation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Planes<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flying as a COPD patient is complicated but definitely doable. Each stage of your journey will have different requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the flight<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step for flying with COPD is to contact the airline for a required form. This documentation must be signed by your doctor and filled out prior to your trip, so leave plenty of time for this. You\u2019ll need to detail your prescribed liter flow, when you need oxygen for the trip (during takeoff and landing, or throughout the flight), and what unit you plan on using. You\u2019ll also need to make sure you have enough battery capacity for the flight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou need to have 150% battery capacity,\u201d Clark says. \u201cThat means enough for your trip, plus 50% more to account for delays.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the airport<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you aren\u2019t checking luggage, you\u2019ll need to visit the check-in counter before going through security. They\u2019ll require you to confirm your type of oxygen concentrator (the machine that delivers oxygen) and verify you have enough of a battery supply for the trip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At security, be prepared to have your concentrator checked for bomb residue. If you can\u2019t take your oxygen off long enough to get through security, you\u2019ll get a special screening and pat-down, so be sure to get to the airport with plenty of time before your flight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And remember to always ask for wheelchair assistance. You\u2019ll get through security more quickly and won\u2019t tire out trying to get to your gate\u2014which would mean you\u2019d have to turn your oxygen up. Ask for it at your destination, as well, to take you to your next gate or to baggage claim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/5-tips-for-traveling-with-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 tips for traveling with prescription drugs<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boarding, flying, and landing<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inform the crew you need extra time so you can board early\u2014whether or not you\u2019re using oxygen, Clark says. That way you won\u2019t struggle being in a crowd or waiting to get settled in your seat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the plane, you\u2019ll generally be required to have a window seat to allow for oxygen tubing (make sure you\u2019ve called ahead to let the airline know you need it).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOxygen cords or tubing become a hazard if you have to evacuate the plane,\u201d Clark explains. \u201cIf you were in an aisle seat, other people would be tripping over your hose trying to get out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitor the saturation of oxygen in your red blood cells throughout the flight. You can do this with a pulse oximeter, a portable device that attaches to your finger. High elevations can mean that your body needs to work harder to take in the same amount of oxygen.\u00a0 The pressurized cabin on a plane may make it difficult to breathe\u2014meaning you may need to increase your oxygen flow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might also want to try and limit your fluid intake on the plane as much as possible, because as Clark notes, \u201cgoing to the bathroom on a plane when you\u2019re on oxygen is hell on wheels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Trains<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ostensibly, train travel with COPD is the easiest method of getting from point A to point B. It\u2019s important to call the train company to see they have specific oxygen rules, and you might want to check if there are outlets on the train to run your oxygen concentrator on the charger, but otherwise, you\u2019re good to go. Enjoy the rails!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Boats<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cruise boats and ships can be tricky for COPD patients, even though the sea air may make your symptoms feel better. Depending on the stage of your COPD, not only will you need a portable oxygen unit to walk around the ship, but you\u2019ll also need a home unit to sleep at night. Before you leave, Clark says, contact the cruise company to see if you\u2019ll be able to plug in your oxygen, if help is available to get your oxygen aboard the ship and to your room, and if the ship has emergency supplies should your oxygen equipment fail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a high-flow patient, cruises probably aren\u2019t best for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRight now with portable concentrators, the most any of them put out is three liters continuous,\u201d Clark said. \u201cIf you\u2019re above that level, it\u2019s really not safe. You couldn\u2019t actually walk around the boat or leave your room. You\u2019d have to be tethered to a home machine or carry a large portable tank behind you, but most cruise carriers don\u2019t allow compressed oxygen tanks because of bomb risks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Staying healthy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a patient traveling with COPD, the biggest risk isn\u2019t how you travel or where you\u2019re going\u2014it\u2019s the people you travel alongside. Make sure you take precautions to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-avoid-getting-sick-while-traveling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep away from any germs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that might be lingering about in recirculated air, surfaces, or coughing people nearby, particularly on planes. Staying up to date on flu and pneumonia vaccination can keep your body immune to fight respiratory illness.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s advisable to wear a mask while you\u2019re on the plane and in the terminal,\u201d Clark says. \u201cYou should wipe down the seat and the tray with some type of cleaning pad. They\u2019re very germy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of the type of travel, though, Clark says the most important thing you can do before your trip is to plan ahead for your oxygen needs and check with your doctor to make sure it\u2019s safe to go.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you have COPD, or know someone who does, you know that oxygen support is likely needed for at least some daily activities.
