Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis is also called chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hashimoto\u2019s is characterized by gradual thyroid failure, due to infiltration of white blood cells and autoimmune-mediated destruction of the thyroid gland. When enough of the normal thyroid gland is affected, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the amount of thyroid hormone may be insufficient. If that sounds like hypothyroidism, it is. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyroid.org\/hashimotos-thyroiditis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hashimoto\u2019s disease is the leading cause of hypothyroidism in the United States<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, affecting 10% of the population. But because of its autoimmune component, understanding and treating Hashimoto\u2019s is more complicated than simply balancing your thyroid hormones. When your immune system sees your own thyroid as a threat, a multi-pronged treatment approach is best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany patients with Hashimoto&#8217;s thyroid disease continue to have symptoms even after starting medications and [seeing] normalization of labs,\u201d says physician and registered dietitian Amy Burkhart, MD, of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theceliacmd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Celiac MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cBecause of this, research has begun to look at other factors that may influence symptoms and overall wellness in Hashimoto\u2019s patients beyond medication.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of these factors may be diet. While a Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis diet won\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cure<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your hypothyroidism, it can help decrease common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/17665-hashimotos-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of hypothyroidism, like constipation, fatigue, and weight gain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when used in conjunction with medication. If you have Hashimoto\u2019s disease and you\u2019re wondering how to implement some smart changes to your diet, here\u2019s everything you need to know about eating for your health with Hashimoto\u2019s disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the best Hashimoto\u2019s diet?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there\u2019s not one best diet for Hashimoto\u2019s, a balanced diet focused on eating whole foods is good for people with Hashimoto\u2019s disease. \u201cEating a diet rich in vegetables, healthy fats, and quality proteins is recommended for people with Hashimoto\u2019s,\u201d says registered dietitian Jeanette Kimszal of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyroidnutritioneducators.com\/jeanette-kimszal-rdn-nlc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thyroid Nutrition Educators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cFood that nourishes the immune system is important to have, eating a lot of processed foods high in sugar, unhealthy fat, and salt may trigger autoimmune issues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These diet rules hold true for people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hypothyroidism-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypothyroidism<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caused by Hashimoto\u2019s, as well as people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hyperthyroidism-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperthyroidism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (although people who make an excess amount of thyroid hormone often need more calories in their diet than people who don\u2019t make enough).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our wellness newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Wellness Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating whole foods can be achieved with a Mediterranean diet (focusing on lean protein, whole grains, and fresh produce) or a DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, which is similar to the Mediterranean diet but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/education\/dash-eating-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emphasizes foods low in sodium and saturated fat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dietitians don\u2019t recommend keto or paleo diets; it can be too difficult to get important nutrients on these diets, and they usually don\u2019t provide lasting lifestyle changes needed to maintain a healthy thyroid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several other Hashimoto\u2019s diet plans, but Dr. Burkhart says most of them are lacking in evidence as far as their specific benefits for the disease. Still, she adds that \u201cthe standard American diet is \u2018pro-inflammatory\u2019 [and] any of the protocols that lower inflammation would be an improvement, [while also having] the added benefit of weight loss and lower BMI, which have been directly shown to help Hashimoto\u2019s.\u201d Here are some popular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-inflammatory diets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that may help people with Hashimoto\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plant-based diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plant-based diets are similar to vegan diets, focusing on eating foods from plant sources, like fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and seeds. The difference is that these diets don\u2019t need to be as strict as a vegan diet; you can eat meat, eggs, and dairy, but would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/what-is-a-plant-based-diet-and-why-should-you-try-it-2018092614760\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emphasize or prioritize plant-based foods as much as possible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA plant-based diet has been shown to lower inflammation,\u201d Dr. Burkhart says. \u201cBecause of this, we would assume that a plant-based or plant-forward diet would benefit Hashimoto\u2019s, but there are no studies to date.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gluten-free diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Burkhart and Kimszal both note that there is often some overlap between people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29662290\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hashimoto\u2019s and people with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Don\u2019t assume that you need to maintain a gluten-free diet if you\u2019ve been diagnosed with Hashimoto\u2019s. However, Dr. Burkhart says it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be beneficial in some cases: \u201cThere are currently no studies that have addressed the gluten-free diet\u2019s effect on Hashimoto\u2019s in people with gluten sensitivity or no symptoms after eating gluten, [but] the gluten-free diet does appear to help patients with celiac disease who also have Hashimoto\u2019s.\u201d Consider getting tested for celiac if you have mouth sores, abdominal pain or bloating after eating<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autoimmune protocol diet (AIP)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This protocol is an elimination diet aimed at reducing inflammation, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-gut-health-impacts-your-well-being\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially in the gut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The goal, says Dr. Burkhart, is to decrease symptoms, balance the thyroid, and decrease the need for medications. There are several foods eliminated in the first phase of the AIP diet, including dairy, gluten, grains, nuts, and seeds, legumes, nightshades, coffee, alcohol, and all added sugars, sweeteners, and additives like nitrates and preservatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve eliminated these foods for 30 days, says Kimszal, the reintroduction phase begins: \u201cThis is when trigger foods are added back in, one at a time, about four days apart; once you find your trigger foods, you can move into the maintenance phase, when you continue to avoid foods that may be problematic.\u201d Essentially, the AIP helps you identify triggers for your autoimmune disorder, reducing some of the inflammation caused by your Hashimoto\u2019s. Kimszal recommends working with a registered dietitian to be sure you\u2019re getting enough critical nutrients during the elimination phase and beyond.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the protocol may seem drastic (there are a lot of foods cut out during the elimination phase!), it may be worth trying the AIP diet for Hashimoto\u2019s, especially if your symptoms are severe or you haven\u2019t had luck with other diet protocols. Dr. Burkhart points to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/labs\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6592837\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 study in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cureus<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking at the effects of the AIP protocol in Hashimoto\u2019s patients: the study showed improvement in quality of life and symptoms, lowered BMI, and improvements in inflammatory markers. However, she does point out that the study was short, included a small number of patients, and lacked explanation about some key factors included (there also was no effect on the actual lab values taken during the course of the study).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 foods for Hashimoto\u2019s<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kimszal points out that compiling a list of foods to eat for Hashimoto\u2019s is less about specific foods and more about emphasizing the right nutrients, proteins, and healthy fats. Some popular food choices from each category are listed here, but keep in mind that your individual dietary needs may be different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome people will feel better if they don\u2019t consume dairy, [while] others feel better if they don\u2019t have nightshades,\u201d Kimszal says. \u201cIt\u2019s important to find a registered dietitian who can help you build a meal plan that works to combat inflammation and make you feel better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Chicken\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most diets for thyroid disorders recommend eating lean protein, which means opting for chicken instead of beef or pork. Ideally, eat chicken breasts, rather than dark meat cuts like thighs or legs, since they are leaner, and choose grilled or broiled chicken over fried. As a bonus, it\u2019s better for your cholesterol, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Fish\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fish is a one-two punch for thyroid health: Not only is it a lean protein, it\u2019s also high in omega-3s, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/labs\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3257651\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some studies suggest reduces inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Omega-3s may even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/376\/bmj-2021-066452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the incidence of inflammatory disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when combined with vitamin D.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Non-starchy vegetables\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starchy vegetables, like sweet potatoes, peas, corn, and white potatoes, are higher in sugar than their non-starchy counterparts. According to the American Thyroid Association, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyroid.org\/patient-thyroid-information\/ct-for-patients\/february-2016\/vol-9-issue-2-p-6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypothyroidism can lead to increased blood sugar levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so it\u2019s wise to keep your dietary sugar low. Choose non-starchy vegetables when possible, swapping potatoes for carrots, asparagus, and salad greens instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Low-sugar fruits<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the same principle as the non-starchy vegetables: some fruits, like grapes, cherries, and bananas, are naturally higher in sugar, and should be eaten in moderation compared to low-sugar fruits such as apples, berries, and coconut.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Complex carbohydrates<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whole grains take longer for your body to digest, keeping you fuller longer and helping you decrease overall caloric intake. They also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-are-carbohydrates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contain less sugar than simple carbs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like white bread, white flour, and white rice. Incorporate carbs like oats, quinoa, barley, and wheat flour into your diet to satisfy your appetite and reduce sugar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Extra virgin olive oil\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use olive oil or any cooking oil high in monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats, like avocado, almond, or even peanut oil. Per the Cleveland Clinic, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/how-to-choose-and-use-healthy-cooking-oils\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these healthier fats are better for cooking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than butter, canola oil, or vegetable oil\u2014and healthy fats are an important part of your overall diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Seeds and nuts<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain nuts and seeds are nutritional powerhouses in tiny packages. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/avoiding-nuts-and-seeds-for-better-gut-health-you-shouldnt-2019090317593\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chia seeds, flaxseeds, and hemp seeds are loaded with protein, fiber, and omega-3s fatty acids, while peanuts, pecans, almonds, and walnuts are chock full of protein, fiber, magnesium, and a handful of healthy vitamins.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 foods to avoid with Hashimoto\u2019s<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following aren\u2019t necessarily the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worst<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> foods for Hashimoto\u2019s but they can be potentially problematic for thyroid health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Iodine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iodine is always on the \u201ccaution\u201d list when it comes to the thyroid, but even Kimszal admits it\u2019s a \u201ctricky\u201d nutrient you shouldn\u2019t eliminate entirely. Instead, aim for the right balance (ask your healthcare provider or a dietician for help if you\u2019re not sure what that looks like).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe thyroid needs some iodine, [but] too much can be harmful and may even cause Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis,\u201d Kimszal explains. \u201cIf someone is feeling lousy, they should look at their iodine intake and levels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iodine exists in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/iodine-deficiency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher amounts in some foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like seaweed, liver, table salts, and shellfish, but can also be found in medications, face, hair, and skincare products.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Nightshades<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to iodine, there isn\u2019t an official ruling on whether nightshades (eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes, and bell peppers) are bad for people with thyroid disease. Conventional wisdom says to avoid them because they contain a compound called glycoalkaloids, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpfightra.org\/should-i-eat-nightshade-vegetables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be harmful for some people with autoimmune diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but there isn\u2019t a lot of research to back this up. Some people can handle nightshades just fine in moderation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Soy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soy is known as a goitrogenic food, which is a food that can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/goitrogens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interfere with thyroid function<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It may also prevent your body from fully absorbing your thyroid medication. Still, it\u2019s often not necessary to avoid soy entirely; you might just want to limit the amount you consume in your diet, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/hypothyroidism\/expert-answers\/hyperthyroidism\/faq-20058188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoid eating soy products around the time you take your medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/thyroid-nodules\/\"><b>What are thyroid nodules?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Dairy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Kimszal, people with Hashimoto\u2019s often decide to restrict or eliminate lactose products for a few reasons. Firstly, dairy may interact with thyroid medications because the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.endocrine.org\/news-and-advocacy\/news-room\/2017\/cows-milk-interferes-with-absorption-of-thyroid-supplement-levothyroxine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium can inhibit absorption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Secondly, Hashimoto\u2019s patients are more likely to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-lactose-intolerance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lactose intolerant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, per a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24078411\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endocrine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Basically, if you feel better being dairy-free, there might be a good reason why.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Cruciferous vegetables<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cruciferous vegetables like kale, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts, are considered goitrogenic. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.endocrineweb.com\/conditions\/hypothyroidism\/news-update-can-kale-cause-hypothyroidism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In moderation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these vegetables are probably okay (and even beneficial) for people with Hashimoto\u2019s but it could interfere with iodine levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does fasting help Hashimoto\u2019s?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intermittent fasting is popular right now\u2014the idea that withholding calories for a period of time, i.e., more than 12 hours, can kick your metabolism into overdrive and help you mobilize stored glucose is not only appealing, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/news\/research-intermittent-fasting-shows-health-benefits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has some science behind it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too. But does it work for people with Hashimoto\u2019s disease and, more importantly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-intermittent-fasting-safe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is it safe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Unfortunately, we don\u2019t know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIntermittent fasting, which is increasingly popular, does influence thyroid function, but it is unclear at this time how it affects Hashimoto&#8217;s thyroiditis specifically,\u201d Dr. Burkhart says. \u201cBecause it has been shown to lower inflammation, it may prove to be helpful in Hashimoto&#8217;s patients, but the research hasn\u2019t been done yet.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kimszal elaborates: \u201cResearch on intermittent fasting only revolves around healthy people and those with a subclinical underactive thyroid. These studies had positive outcomes, [but] it\u2019s hard to say how intermittent fasting will affect people with Hashimoto\u2019s [because it\u2019s an autoimmune condition].\u201d Because of the uncertainty, talk with an endocrinologist and registered dietitian before trying any fasting-based diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can Hashimoto\u2019s be reversed with diet?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hashimoto\u2019s is a chronic, autoimmune disease. When your body becomes hypothyroid, you will need to take thyroid supplementation for the rest of your life. Thyroid pills give your body back what it needs to function. Consider the thyroid gland like the gas pedal of your body, if you are hypothyroid your foot is \u201cpedal to the metal\u201d and you are only driving 5 mph. You may also want to check with your provider about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/synthroid-and-coffee\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drinking coffee near the time you take your Synthroid dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, since some studies have shown it can also decrease the efficacy of the drug. It is most important to remain consistent with your thyroid medication dosing schedule. Your physician will check your thyroid levels and, as long as they are within the normal range, continue with your current diet and medication schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifestyle changes\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to managing your diet, reducing stress, maintaining your sleep, and getting regular exercise can also influence thyroid function. \u201cStress is known to affect autoimmune diseases negatively, including Hashimoto&#8217;s,\u201d Dr. Burkhart says. \u201cRegular exercise reduces stress, so regular exercise 30 minutes, five times per week is recommended for everyone.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not a runner or big into cardio, don\u2019t sweat it.
