Are Latuda and exercise a safe combination? If you\u2019re not sure how this medication could affect your workout routine, keep reading.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Latuda?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/latuda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (lurasidone) is an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/atypical-antipsychotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atypical, or second-generation, antipsychotic medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prescribed to treat mood disorders such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/schizophrenia-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">schizophrenia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the depressive phases of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/bipolar-disorder-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bipolar disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It works by helping restore the balance of dopamine and serotonin in the brain\u2014which may normalize thoughts and lessen feelings of sadness and anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you exercise while taking antipsychotic medicine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, in fact, moderate levels of exercise are advisable,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hans-watson-0a389740\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hans Watson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DO, neuropsychiatrist, diet expert, and author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Two-Rule-Diet-Weight-still-favorite-ebook\/dp\/B094MQGM3G\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Two Rule Diet<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5636011\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence suggests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that exercise works together with antipsychotic medication to initiate nerve cell or neuron healing in the areas of the brain affected by psychosis. Weight gain is a common side effect from antipsychotic medication, so exercise is encouraged to help decrease weight gain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, \u201cexercise may prevent the risk of health conditions linked to the treatment of major psychiatric disorders like weight gain, Type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol levels,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farrinstitute.org\/author\/daniel-boyer-m-d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel Boyer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a researcher at the Farr Institute in West Des Moines, Iowa. For most people, there are no downsides to exercising while taking Latuda.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Latuda affect exercise?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, Latuda may affect exercise performance. There are a few <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/latuda-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of the medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can make breaking a sweat a little more challenging.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Sedation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWhen first starting the medication, some people can experience some sedation,\u201d explains Dr. Watson. This side effect often wears off after a couple weeks. In the meantime, you may need to reschedule workouts, or time your medication so it doesn\u2019t interfere with your exercise schedule.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Heat sensitivity:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt makes people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-that-cause-heat-intolerance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more sensitive to heat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is one of its side effects,\u201d Dr. Boyer says. \u201cThis may greatly reduce your exercise performance, particularly during hot days.\u201d If it is warm outside, consider exercising in the shade or indoors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Impaired cooling:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, because Latuda can affect your body\u2019s ability to effectively cool, \u201cIt\u2019s advisable to stay very well hydrated and workout indoors, when possible,\u201d Dr. Watson says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Muscle problems: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rarely, people<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/About-Mental-Illness\/Treatments\/Mental-Health-Medications\/Types-of-Medication\/Lurasidone-(Latuda)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may develop muscle-related side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) and tardive dyskinesia (TD). EPS causes restlessness, tremor, and stiffness. TD symptoms include uncontrollable slow or jerky movements. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMoreover, some people may also experience rare side effects of Latuda like muscle stiffness, body pain, fatigue, and an irregular heartbeat that may also make exercise difficult<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Dr. Boyer says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk with your healthcare provider about possible side effects. However, if you\u2019re cautious with strenuous exercise, watch your heat exposure, and drink enough water, you shouldn\u2019t experience many problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/working-out-in-the-heat\/\"><b>Safety tips for working out in the heat<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Latuda interact with pre-workout supplements?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just because they are sold over the counter, it doesn\u2019t mean that natural supplements are safe\u2014especially if you have a mental health condition. There is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ijnp\/article\/16\/1\/55\/629710\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that stimulants may cause mania for certain patients, and patients with bipolar are more susceptible to this. Since pre-workout supplements often contain caffeine, it\u2019s important to have a conversation with your healthcare provider to make sure you\u2019re not consuming too much, and that the other ingredients are safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various medications, like<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cardizem\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardizem (diltiazem)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/erythromycin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ery-Tab (erythromycin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluconazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can interact with Latuda. On top of that, certain foods, beverages, and other supplements cause issues.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grapefruit, grapefruit juice, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/st-johns-wort\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. John\u2019s wort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all interact with the enzyme CYP3A4. Because this enzyme helps your body metabolize and eliminate Latuda, they can cause issues with this medication. Interestingly, Latuda is a medication that is better absorbed by taking it with 350 calories or more of food. Before taking any prescriptions or vitamins, check in with your provider or pharmacist to confirm that there are not drug interactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does exercise help with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cExercise helps with every mental health condition that I am familiar with,\u201d Dr. Watson says. \u201cThis includes schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise positively affects mood because it helps the body release natural endorphins, which are the brain\u2019s \u201cfeel-good\u201d chemicals. As endorphins increase, your mood improves. And, endorphins work quickly. Mental health medications like Latuda take several weeks to reach their full benefit. Exercise can have more immediate positive effects on your mood. \u201cPeople should start seeing mental health improvements within a week or two of initiating a doctor-approved exercise regimen,\u201d Dr. Watson adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason, healthcare providers often recommend exercise for individuals living with depression. Typically, this is also true for individuals with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. However, this is not always the case, as noted in a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4349127\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2015 review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of bipolar disorder and exercise. For some people, exercise helped ease hypomanic symptoms, improved sleep, and provided a calming effect. Conversely, for others with bipolar, exercise worsened manic symptoms and caused a spiraling effect of both manic and hypomanic episodes.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak with your healthcare team before starting any exercise regimen, as they can help you better understand how your body may react.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What exercise is best for schizophrenia or bipolar disorder?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no evidence that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> any one specific exercise is best for individuals taking Latuda. However, there are some suggestions to get you started.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cardio with strength training:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any moderate-intensity exercise that mixes strength training and cardio will be very helpful,\u201d Dr. Watson says. Remember that the intensity of the exercise could cause issues if you\u2019re at risk of overheating. Therefore, it\u2019s best to start slow and in a cool environment until you know how you react.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Yoga:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cOther exercise activities like yoga that can lower stress and anxiety may effectively reduce symptoms,\u201d says Dr. Boyer. The research agrees that yoga may help with mood disorders.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Although it\u2019s not widely researched, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4711234\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2015 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 30 people with schizophrenia found daily yoga used alongside medications could help reduce symptom severity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tai chi: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another helpful exercise for those with schizophrenia is<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/Blogs\/NAMI-Blog\/January-2021\/Grounding-Schizophrenia-Through-Tai-Chi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tai chi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an ancient Chinese practice that combines deep breathing and relaxation with flowing movements.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can exercise trigger mania?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile it is theoretically possible, there is a lack of evidence of exercise being the cause of a manic episode,\u201d Dr. Watson <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although sometimes a person experiencing mania may engage in extreme exercise, it likely doesn\u2019t cause mania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInstead, there is a lot of evidence that moderate levels of exercise have an extremely calming effect on the body and therefore can lead to mania prevention,\u201d says Dr. Watson.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Exercise has countless benefits for your physical and mental health.
