Aimovig (erenumab-aooe) is a brand-name prescription drug that prevents <\/span>episodic or chronic migraine headaches<\/span><\/a>. Its active ingredient is a monoclonal antibody that stops blood vessels in the head from widening at the start of a migraine. As a result, people with migraines experience fewer symptomatic migraine attacks each month. Aimovig is <\/span>administered<\/span><\/a> as a subcutaneous injection using a prefilled syringe or SureClick autoinjector once per month <\/span>at a dose<\/span><\/a> of either 70 mg\/mL or 140 mg\/mL. Unfortunately, Aimovig is an expensive drug without a less expensive generic version available, so uninsured patients might have to pay the full cash price for a prescription. There are, however, several ways to reduce the cost.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is Aimovig covered by insurance?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Commercial insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid health plans may cover Aimovig. The average patient with commercial or private insurance and an Aimovig Ally Access Card from the manufacturer (Amgen) pays between $5 and $82 per month for Aimovig, <\/span>according to Amgen<\/span><\/a>. Aimovig with Medicare costs $20 or less per month for 69% of consumers, according to Amgen, and Aimovig with Medicaid costs $10 or less per month for 99% of consumers. It belongs to a family of drugs called <\/span>calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor antagonists (CGRP antagonists)<\/span><\/a>. There are no generic versions of Aimovig or any other CGRP antagonists. However, other drugs that are used off-label for preventing migraines may have a generic version available and, therefore, can be more affordable. These include <\/span>beta blockers<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>calcium channel blockers<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>antidepressants<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>anticonvulsants<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are no over-the-counter medications or supplements that can effectively reduce the incidence of migraine attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n
