They count pills, call insurance companies, staff the register <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the drive-thru, verify insurance coverage, check inventory, and talk to doctor\u2019s offices, all while answering phones, responding to customer questions and complaints, and sometimes even administering vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, the list of job duties for techs isn\u2019t getting shorter any time soon; with many pharmacies across the country cutting hours and the increased <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ijpp\/article\/29\/6\/556\/6380910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic-related pressure on pharmacy staff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, techs are likely to take on even more responsibilities in the coming months. But\u2026how? Are there practical and easy-to-implement pharmacy tech tips to improve pharmacy operations?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pharmacy-technician-duties\/\"><b>Why pharmacy techs are essential for every pharmacy<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9 pharmacy technician tips<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare talked to three pharmacists who have worked in a myriad of settings, from retail to research to hospitals, and in a number of different roles: as technicians, pharmacists, interns, and pharmacy managers. Here\u2019s what they said about how pharmacy techs can optimize their working hours behind the counter and help their pharmacies run more smoothly\u2014without burning out or compromising their own well-being.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Plan ahead for long days<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technician hours vary widely, but many techs find themselves working long (read: 12-hour) shifts on a regular basis. What are the essential items for surviving a shift at the pharmacy? For one, good shoes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for what kind? \u201cIt\u2019s really personal preference,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jenna-spell-08a777141\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenna Spell, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pharmacist in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Carolina<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who recently made the move from retail to research. \u201cI\u2019ve seen some people swear by Crocs, others tennis shoes, and others Rothy\u2019s, but good shoes, compression stockings, gum, [and] a water bottle (if you\u2019re allowed one) are essentials.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pharmacist Crash Course: Pharmacy Tech Tips\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jxOuVSmIESo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Excel at administrative tasks<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/malena-desantos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malena DeSantos, Pharm.D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">., a pharmacist at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CVS in Berkeley, California<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, techs can\u2019t verify prescriptions but can perform almost every other task in the pharmacy. Because of this, a tech\u2019s mechanical skills can impact the overall workflow of their pharmacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecoming proficient at tasks such as typing, filling, and inventory management, and taking on additional roles such as training new hires and handling scheduling,\u201d says Dr. DeSantos, \u201ccan allow techs to positively impact the pharmacy and play an integral role on the team.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, know how important all those day-to-day administrative tasks are to the pharmacy and your coworkers; even though they may sometimes feel unglamorous and tedious, they can help your whole pharmacy excel.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Know your limits<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re a confident, competent, and dedicated pharmacy technician\u2026but you\u2019re not a superhuman! Dr. Spell says it\u2019s crucial to remember that you are only one person and simply can\u2019t do it all\u2014even if you want to!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Be watchful for any Rx errors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All pharmacies have a series of checks and balances to reduce the likelihood of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/medication-errors-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication errors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being made. When the proper protocols are followed, mistakes will be rare; still, the possibility for a grave error exists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should you make a mistake, the temptation to fix it by yourself or even try to cover it up will be real, but it\u2019s important to do the exact opposite, says Dr. DeSantos: \u201cWhen an error is made, it should always be communicated as quickly as possible\u2014to the pharmacist, the patient, and to anyone else involved.\u201d Make sure you know your pharmacy\u2019s procedures for each type of error.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Improve your time management skills<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep learning ways to safely and effectively improve your productivity without getting bogged down by your workload. \u201cI try to pair tasks when possible,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/indirafriel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indira Geist, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an outpatient pharmacist at a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pediatric hospital in Pennsylvania<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cFor example, when I worked in pharmacies that had drive-thrus, I might try to type a few inbound prescriptions while waiting for cars to pull around.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Count medications smarter, not harder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, you\u2019ll find useful ways to count medications more quickly and increase your efficiency at work, but you don\u2019t want to do that at the expense of accuracy. Instead, find smart ways to count medications more quickly, so you can move along at a brisk\u2014but safe\u2014pace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can start by counting \u201cslappers,\u201d Dr. DeSantos says, i.e., medications you don\u2019t have to count individually, like 90-count bottles, creams, inhalers, and more. This will help you get a lot more done quickly, up front, and then leave you more time later for pill counting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Prioritize accuracy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of accuracy in the pharmacy, Dr. Geist says that of the three pillars of any community pharmacy\u2014accuracy, efficiency, and service\u2014accuracy is the most important. \u201cThe responsibility of handling prescriptions is massive, and there\u2019s truly no room for error,\u201d she warns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t remind you of this to stress you out, but simply to help you prioritize throughout your day, whenever you feel overwhelmed. Is it important to count pills quickly? Yes, but not as important as counting them <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">correctly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When in doubt, make accuracy your top goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Remember your patients are people<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In rushed retail settings, it\u2019s easy to forget that the customers at the counter are not just another task to get through\u2014and that you may not be interacting with them while they\u2019re at their best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI like to remind my colleagues that we are meeting people under less than ideal circumstances: they might be sick, experiencing some medical event, or managing difficult chronic health conditions,\u201d says Dr. Geist. \u201cAssume positive intent and try to meet people where they are at that moment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pending queue of prescriptions, adds Dr. Geist, will always be there. But you have a unique opportunity when a patient or customer is standing in front of you to take care of them; there is great value in that, and a technician who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pharmacy-technicians-help-customers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">embraces their service skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can have a positive ripple effect on the rest of the pharmacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Guard against burnout<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s be honest: pharmacy staff have an incredibly stressful job. This was true before the COVID-19 pandemic and it\u2019s even more true now. As the face greeting patients behind the counter, you will have uplifting, fulfilling interactions some days and ones that are the total opposite on other days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of patients, you also have to deal with coworkers, managers, administrators, and colleagues in outside organizations like insurance companies and healthcare provider offices. Communication can break down quickly, resentments and frustrations can build, and technicians can find themselves burned out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pandemic-fatigue-in-pharmacies\/\"><b>How to fight pandemic fatigue in the pharmacy<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think the best advice I can give is to take your breaks\u2014take that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pharmacist-burnout\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health moment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to just step away from the chaos and recenter yourself,\u201d says Dr. Spell, who says that whenever she would see one of her technicians getting frazzled, she would jump in and tell them to go outside or go to the break room for a little while.
