A loss of only 1 to 2% of the body water <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4207053\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been shown to impair cognitive performance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014causing mood shifts, muddled thinking, inattentiveness, and poor memory. And that\u2019s just skimming the surface. Mild to moderate dehydration can wreak havoc on the rest of your body\u2014causing fatigue, poor appetite, heat intolerance, dizziness, lightheadedness, constipation, kidney stones, and even a dangerous drop in blood pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes of dehydration<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even though we all know our bodies need water, it\u2019s tough to know how much (the old standard <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/water\/art-20044256\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8&#215;8 rule has been up for debate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently). You might be drinking water throughout the day, but if one of these factors is robbing you of hydration, it might not be enough. Age, pregnancies, alcohol consumption, chronic diseases such as Crohn\u2019s and Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the altitude that you live at, and even the medications you\u2019re taking can affect your body\u2019s ability to stave off dehydration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dehydration from medication\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain prescriptions, including medications for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ways-to-manage-high-blood-pressure-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, heart disease, and kidney conditions have diuretic effects\u2014meaning that they increase the amount of water and salt expelled from the body through urination. To put it bluntly, the more you go to the bathroom while on these meds, the more likely you are to become dehydrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need not only water to stay hydrated, but also salt. Our bodies use salts as electrolytes, aka the chemicals in our body fluids that carry the energy necessary for (very) important functions like muscle contractions and nerve synapses. When diuretics do their job, it\u2019s hard to replenish water and electrolytes as quickly as you\u2019re losing them. And by the time you\u2019re dehydrated and your potassium is too low (referred to as hypokalemia), your body won\u2019t be able to correctly store glycogen (your muscles&#8217; source of energy), which can cause abnormal heart rhythms, cause muscle weakness, spasms, cramps, paralysis, and respiratory problems in severe cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essentially, it\u2019s important to stay hydrated (especially in hot, dry conditions) and it\u2019s important to know what factors are robbing you of electrolytes and water so you can replenish yourself appropriately. That means knowing if your medications are putting you at risk of dehydration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications that cause dehydration<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diuretics that are prescribed to treat edema, kidney disorders, heart failure, liver failure, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/living-with-glaucoma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glaucoma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bumex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bumex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bumetanide)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/diuril\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diuril<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (chlorothiazide)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/inspra\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (eplerenone)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lasix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lasix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (furosemide)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demadex (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/torsemide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">torsemide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dyrenium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dyrenium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (triamterene)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These medications fall into all three types of diuretics: thiazide, loop, and potassium-sparing. SGLT2 inhibitors such as empagliflozin, dapagliflozin, and cangliflozin, are the new class of diabetes medications that can cause dehydration. These medications have a mild diuretic effect and the body may take up to a week to get used to these medications. Even over-the-counter medications\u2014like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/midol-complete\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014have diuretic properties, so always read the labels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/colace-vs-dulcolax\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laxatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also put you at risk of dehydration, due to their ability to direct water in your body to your gastrointestinal system to soften stool and help you pass it more easily. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dulcolax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dulcolax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bisacodyl) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/colace\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (docusate) can both have this effect, especially when used over prolonged periods.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any drug that lists diarrhea or vomiting as a potential side effect could end up causing the unfavorable effects of dehydration if you do indeed end up vomiting or experiencing diarrhea.
