If you have Type 2 diabetes, your <\/span>healthcare provider<\/span> may prescribe <\/span>Ozempic<\/span> (<\/span>semaglutide<\/span>)<\/span><\/a> as part of your diabetes treatment plan. <\/span>Ozempic<\/span> is a once-weekly antidiabetic <\/span>prescription medication<\/span> that can help you manage your <\/span>Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a> by improving <\/span>blood sugar<\/span> control. It is not for use in people with <\/span>Type 1 diabetes<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Ozempic<\/span> belongs to a drug class called <\/span>glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor <\/span>agonists<\/span><\/a>, or <\/span>GLP-1<\/span> agonists.<\/span><\/p>\n

“These medications work by enhancing the effect of the naturally-occurring hormone <\/span>GLP-1<\/span>,” says <\/span>Aleem Kanji<\/span><\/a>, MD, board-certified endocrinologist and obesity medicine physician at Ethos Endocrinology, PLLC, in Houston, Texas. “<\/span>Ozempic<\/span> promotes insulin release by the beta-cells of the pancreas, slows the emptying of the stomach, and promotes the feeling of fullness by acting on the brain\u2014particularly at the level of the hypothalamus.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Ozempic<\/span> is used with diet and exercise to <\/span>improve <\/span>blood sugar<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>glucose<\/span>) levels and lower <\/span>hemoglobin A1C (also known as HbA1c or A1C)<\/span><\/a>, a test used to monitor how well you manage blood sugar levels over two or three months. It also reduces the risk of major <\/span>cardiovascular<\/span> (<\/span>CV<\/span>) events, including <\/span>heart attack<\/span> and stroke, in those with known heart disease. Some prescribers have also started using <\/span>Ozempic off-label for weight loss<\/span><\/a>. However, the same weight-loss medication is available under the brand name <\/span>Wegovy<\/span><\/a>. Like many diabetes medications, <\/span>Ozempic<\/span> is expensive. But there are ways to save money on your next prescription.<\/span><\/p>\n

How much does <\/span>Ozempic<\/span> cost per month?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The price of <\/span>Ozempic<\/span> varies based on several factors. These include the pharmacy you use, your insurance coverage, and the quantity of pens you purchase at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many insurance plans, as well as Medicare and Medicaid, will cover Ozempic. However, your copay (or out-of-pocket costs) with insurance may vary by plan and what stage of coverage you\u2019re in. For example, your Ozempic copay will likely be higher until you meet your deductible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Medicare Part D<\/span> plans cover many diabetes drugs, including <\/span>Ozempic<\/span>. The <\/span>Medicare Plan Finder tool<\/span><\/a> allows you to find Medicare plans that cover your specific prescriptions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Medicaid<\/span><\/a> coverage also varies by state and plan. Some states may cover <\/span>Ozempic<\/span> with no out-of-<\/span>pocket costs<\/span>. For example, the Healthy Indiana Plan Plus covers <\/span>Ozempic<\/span> with prior authorization, <\/span>according to Anthem<\/span><\/a>. However, its quantities are limited. This means you will only be able to fill a specific number of <\/span>Ozempic prescriptions<\/span> per month.<\/span><\/p>\n

Healthcare professionals<\/span> will work with pharmacies and insurance providers to obtain approval for your medication. A <\/span>prior authorization<\/span><\/a> process may have to be completed before your <\/span>insurance plan<\/span> will pick up the cost of <\/span>Ozempic<\/span>. The <\/span>Novo Nordisk<\/span> Patient Assistance Program<\/span> (PAP)<\/span><\/a> offers free medication to people who meet certain income and insurance requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n

To qualify, you must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident and have a household income at or below the 400% federal poverty level. Those without insurance or Medicare coverage may be eligible, but people with Medicaid, commercial health insurance, or Veterans Benefits do not qualify.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re in a pinch and waiting on prior authorization from insurance, your healthcare provider may be able to provide a free sample of Ozempic. However, this is not a sustainable strategy to get free Ozempic. You\u2019ll likely only be provided with a month\u2019s worth of medication.<\/span><\/p>\n
