Some take Xanax. Some take Xanax <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alcohol, such as a glass or two of wine. But this, doctors and pharmacists say, is not safe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou should never combine benzodiazepines with alcohol,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordhealthcare.org\/doctors\/l\/anna-lembke.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna Lembke, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of addiction medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, California. The results, she says, can be deadly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixing alcohol and anxiety meds<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzodiazepines refer to the class of drugs that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xanax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (alprazolam) and other well-known <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-anxiety medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ativan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ativan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (lorazepam) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/valium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (diazepam), fall into.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you combine [benzodiazepines with alcohol] you can have a serious <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alcohol-and-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug-drug interaction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including a lethal overdose,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of the reason is that both are sedatives. Individually, they can relax muscles, make you sleepy, and reduce feelings of panic, fear, and agitation. Together, they do all of those things with greater intensity. But that is not all the combo does. Taking them simultaneously can amplify the potential for certain scary side effects, like respiratory depression (also known as hypoventilation).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In layman\u2019s terms, respiratory depression is when your breathing slows to a dangerous level. And if this happens, the risk of consequences is serious. Worst case scenario? \u201c[You] fall asleep and stop breathing,\u201d Dr. Lembke says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our mental health newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Mental Health Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, the use of alcohol and anxiety medications are both prevalent enough that this worst-case scenario is not at all far-fetched. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States, affecting 18.1% of the adult population each year, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/about-adaa\/press-room\/facts-statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety and Depression Association of America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And doctors are prescribing benzodiazepines to treat anxiety at increasing rates. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2722576\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study published<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reports that the number of doctor visits that resulted in a benzodiazepine prescription almost doubled between 2003 and 2015, increasing from 3.8 to 7.4%. Furthermore, benzodiazepines are increasingly being prescribed for mild to moderate anxiety when they are technically meant for severe or acute anxiety, Lembke says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9503 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_072619_Anti_Anxiety-1024x480.png\" alt=\"Chart determining the risk of mixing medication and alcohol from less risky to don't do it\" width=\"604\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_072619_Anti_Anxiety-1024x480.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_072619_Anti_Anxiety-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_072619_Anti_Anxiety-768x360.png 768w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_072619_Anti_Anxiety-1536x720.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_072619_Anti_Anxiety.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for alcohol use, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nsduhweb.rti.org\/respweb\/homepage.cfm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Survey on Drug Use and Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/NSDUH-FFR1-2016\/NSDUH-FFR1-2016.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2016, 54.6% of adults 26 and older were current alcohol users<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In all, benzodiazepines were at least partially responsible for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/related-topics\/trends-statistics\/overdose-death-rates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11,537 overdose-related deaths in 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The takeaway here is that if you are using a benzodiazepine for anxiety, make sure that you are using it properly. This means waiting until the drug is out of your system before hitting happy hour. The timeframe for this, however, is not set in stone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt really depends on a few things,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/people\/rachel-firebaugh\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rachel Firebaugh, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy in Seattle. She explains that the medication dosage and the amount of alcohol involved are important factors. \u201cIf it were a small amount of alcohol and a lower dose of the benzo, there would be a lower risk,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzos and alcohol side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Lembke says people should wait one or maybe even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> days after taking a benzodiazepine before drinking, emphasizing that some benzodiazepines are longer-acting (like Valium) and will stay in your system longer than others (Xanax is considered shorter acting). And while she points out that overdoses are more likely to occur in people who are also taking other prescription and\/or recreational drugs (including opioids), she also urges people to seek immediate medical attention in the event of a suspected overdose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Firebaugh says signs of overdose could include difficulty breathing, lost consciousness, and the inability to wake someone. Also be on the lookout for dizziness, slurred speech, confusion, and weakness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also important to recognize that benzodiazepines are highly addictive, Drs. Lembke and Firebaugh say, especially for those who already struggle with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-help-alcohol-use-disorder\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol abuse or misuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of people get prescribed benzos and have no idea they are addictive,\u201d Dr. Lembke says. \u201cThe bottom line is we use benzos too frequently and too casually.
