Excess <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TNF<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> release is associated with inflammation and tissue damage. While <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TNF<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hold many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) approved indications, they may be used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including graft versus host disease, sarcoidosis, and pyoderma gangrenosum. This medication is administered by a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subcutaneous<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injection, and can be self-administered in one\u2019s own home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversely, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TNF<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> release is not always harmful; it is released from immune cells after exposure to infectious stimuli and is therefore important in our body\u2019s response to infection. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TNF<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibitor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> therapy can therefore be immunosuppressive and lead to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious infections<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK537162\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lymphoproliferative disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lymphoma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Patients will need to be tested for latent tuberculosis and hepatitis B virus before initiation of therapy and during therapy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-can-i-take-in-place-of-humira\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can I take in place of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humira<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TNF<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more broadly part of a category known as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biologic drugs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TNF<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include 2 other monoclonal antibodies besides <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humira<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adalimumab<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remicade<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infliximab<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and Simponi (golimumab). The class also includes a polyethylene glycol-conjugated fab fragment under the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cemzia (certolizumab), and a fusion protein under the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Enbrel (etanercept). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humira<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the first human <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/monoclonal-antibodies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monoclonal antibody<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA approved<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rheumatoid arthritis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2003, and since has picked up many additional <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA-approved<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abbvie<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s patent for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humira<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expired in 2023 and several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/cyltezo-fda-approval\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humira biosimilars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have become available for patients, which is monumental as the main difference will be reduced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/humira-cost\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug pricing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biosimilars<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are defined as an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA-approved<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> biopharmaceutical that is similar but not identical to its reference product, and a subset may also be granted an additional <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA-approved<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interchangeable label. To date, there are 10 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biosimilars<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adalimumab<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA-approved<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but only 3 have been approved as an interchangeable product \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abrilada<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adalimumab<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-afzb; Pfizer), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cyltezo-2-pen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyltezo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adalimumab<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-adbm; Boehringer Ingelheim), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/simlandi-2-pen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simlandi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adalimumab<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-ryvk; Teva).
