But some diseases are only common in women. These are diseases that involve female organs, such as the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and vagina<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/womensrh\/healthconcerns.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can develop cysts, fibroids, or cancers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of these organs\u2019 close proximity to the gastrointestinal system,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/agcosprings.com\/gi-doctors-colorado-springs\/teresa-yanchak-md-colorado-springs-gastroenterology\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teresa Yanchak, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a gastroenterologist with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/agcosprings.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associates in Gastroenterology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Colorado Springs, says that she sees women-specific digestive issues in her practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are multiple GI issues that occur more commonly in women,\u201d Dr. Yanchak says. \u201cThese include irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn\u2019s disease), gallstones, autoimmune liver disease, celiac disease, and pelvic floor dysfunction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides physical health, certain mental health conditions are more common in women. Women more likely than men to experience depression and anxiety, and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/commentaries\/detail\/ten-top-issues-for-women's-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suicide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a leading cause of death for women under age 60. Additionally, violence and domestic abuse are disproportionally inflicted on women:<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/commentaries\/detail\/ten-top-issues-for-women's-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 3 women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will experience physical or sexual abuse by the time they are 50.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women\u2019s health conditions at every age<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you know what to watch out for at every age, it can help you stay healthier and be aware of issues before they become serious.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What age do health problems start for women?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health issues can crop up at any time during a woman\u2019s life. Many sexual and reproductive health issues occur between the ages of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/commentaries\/detail\/ten-top-issues-for-women's-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 and 44<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But, serious conditions such as cancer or heart disease are more likely to develop in midlife, from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ahrq.gov\/patients-consumers\/prevention\/lifestyle\/healthy-women.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">age 50 on<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health problems in teens<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, major health problems are rare in teen girls. The most common complaints from teens involve menstruation, says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/dreamsfertility.com\/dr-luis-murrain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luis Murrain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DO, reproductive endocrinologist, OB-GYN, co-founder and partner physician at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dreamsfertility.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dreams Fertility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cAs girls enter the teenage years, things such as endometriosis and dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual cycles) may present,\u201d Dr. Murrain explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/health-issues\/conditions\/genitourinary-tract\/Pages\/Menstrual-Disorders.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academy of American Pediatrics (AAP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 50%-75% of teen girls report painful periods (dysmenorrhea), which can include cramps, back pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sweating. Teen girls also often report irregular periods. Menstrual cramps are treated with pain relief medication, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/naproxen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naproxen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ketoprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ketoprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Birth control pills are prescribed to effectively decrease menstrual cramps, for contraception, and to regulate periods.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health problems in 20s<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As women become more sexually active in their 20s, sexual health, and STIs are top health concerns. In fact,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/statistics\/prevalence-incidence-cost-2020.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, half of all reported STIs are from 15- to 24-year-olds. \u201cIn the 20s, health issues such as sexually transmitted infections and pelvic inflammatory disease become an issue, which can have a lasting effect on a woman\u2019s fertility,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Murrain says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention is key when it comes to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/sexuallytransmitteddiseases.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Using condoms during sexual contact reduces your risk of contracting an STI. STIs caused by bacteria or parasites can be treated with antibiotics, but there is no cure for STIs that stem from a virus. Still, viral STIs, like genital herpes, can be managed with chronic medication reducing symptoms and transmission to future sexual partners. There are effective and safe vaccines given to pediatric patients to decrease hepatitis B and HPV infections for a lifetime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health problems at 30<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many health problems facing women in their 30s involve fertility, and complications resulting from pregnancy and childbirth. The<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/infertility\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimates that 1 in 5 women between the ages of 30 to 39 will have trouble conceiving, and fertility declines starting at age 30 until <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/faqs\/having-a-baby-after-age-35-how-aging-affects-fertility-and-pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">age 45<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or so. Additionally, conditions related to pregnancy and childbirth\u2014including<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcbs.com\/the-health-of-america\/reports\/trends-in-pregnancy-and-childbirth-complications-in-the-us#:~:text=and%20postnatal%20care.-,Pregnancy%20complications%20include%20gestational%20diabetes%20and%20preeclampsia.,a%20certain%20window%20surrounding%20delivery.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gestational diabetes and preeclampsia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014can cause significant issues and can lead to death, if not treated promptly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staying healthy during your childbearing years<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/programs\/womens-health\/womans-journey\/adult-30s.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">involves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, managing your stress, moderating your alcohol intake, and getting enough sleep. You should also take care to keep up with your yearly gynecological and general health exams. Women in their 30s should be doing monthly breast exams and monthly checks for abnormal moles or other skin changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health problems in 40s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women\u2019s health after 40 centers includes symptoms of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/perimenopause\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perimenopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is when your ovaries start releasing fewer eggs, your level of progesterone and estrogen decrease, and menstrual periods become irregular. Perimenopause can last two to 10 years: menopause is when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he decrease in ovarian hormones causes menstrual irregularities, hot flashes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vaginal-dryness-treatment\/\">vaginal dryness<\/a>, sleep disturbance, pain with intercourse, infertility, weight gain, and moodiness. During this time, health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, obesity, and infertility may also become more prominent, says Dr. Murrain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staying healthy and vibrant during your 40s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/healthcare.utah.edu\/womenshealth\/40s.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">involves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eating well-balanced meals, and staying fit. Adding strength training to your fitness routine can keep your bones and muscles strong, help in weight management, and protect against osteoporosis. It\u2019s vital that you complete your health screenings, including<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/healthy\/find-cancer-early\/american-cancer-society-guidelines-for-the-early-detection-of-cancer.html#:~:text=Women%20ages%2040%20to%2044,or%20can%20continue%20yearly%20screening.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/colorectal\/basic_info\/screening\/index.htm#:~:text=Regular%20screening%2C%20beginning%20at%20age,to%20their%20doctor%20about%20screening.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colon cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> screenings.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female health problems after 50, and beyond<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As women age, they face the gynecological symptoms that come with menopause, which may include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary incontinence, vaginal atrophy and dryness, and pain with intercourse (dyspareunia), explains Dr. Murrain. Women also encounter health issues such as cancer, osteoporosis, and diabetes. Cancer is the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/women\/lcod\/2017\/all-races-origins\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leading cause of death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of women older than 45, followed by heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssmhealth.com\/womens-health\/age-50-plus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as you age<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help you live a longer and more enjoyable life. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily, and eat a diet rich with fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Keeping up with immunizations, doctor\u2019s visits, and health screenings, is imperative as you age.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the most significant barriers to women\u2019s health?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women in the U.S. have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/publications\/fund-reports\/2020\/jul\/transforming-primary-health-care-women-part-1-framework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poorer health outcomes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when compared to women in other high-income countries. Additionally, there are huge disparities in healthcare for women of different socioeconomic, educational, and racial backgrounds. According to a study by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/publications\/fund-reports\/2020\/jul\/transforming-primary-health-care-women-part-1-framework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commonwealth Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are a number of factors responsible for this including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Separation of reproductive health from women\u2019s whole health and lack of integrated healthcare teams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insufficient medical training and clinical guidelines for providers on different disease progression specifically in women<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use of treatment approaches developed for and focused on men<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of consistent access to primary care due to time constraints, rising cost of care, or shortage of providers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex- or gender-bias among providers that leads to dismissal of women\u2019s health concerns as less severe than men\u2019s<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerns about confidentiality of care<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stigma and politicization of women\u2019s reproductive issues<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These above problems may lead to both less comprehensive and less women-focused care. Women may also skip routine visits that can catch issues early. We know that early detection improves health outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to overcome these barriers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the barriers to preventing good women\u2019s healthcare are structural. However, prioritizing primary and preventive care are a first step to improving your health outcomes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule regular visits with your primary care doctor or OB-GYN. You should be a priority, no matter what. See a physician for checkups and screenings\u2014or anytime that something feels wrong or off with your body. There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-see-a-doctor-without-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community health clinics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offering lower cost treatment. These federally qualified health clinics (FQHCs) are often located in urban areas and on a bus-line.
