According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/vaccines-and-immunization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vaccines are available for more than 20 life-threatening diseases and prevent 2 to 3 million deaths worldwide each year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVaccination coverage is important for Medicare-aged adults because there are many vaccines that are recommended in that particular age group,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/samantha-brandon-boartfield-90394ba2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samantha Brandon Boartfield<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D. \u201cFor example, annual influenza, pneumococcal, and zoster are all vaccinations that a Medicare-aged adult may be eligible for depending on their personal vaccine and health history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Younger people with certain conditions, such as End-Stage Renal Disease or Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease, are also eligible for Medicare and may be considered high risk for some vaccine-preventable diseases, like Hepatitis B.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a general overview of Medicare vaccine coverage, including which parts cover vaccines, which vaccines are covered, and how Medicare consumers can get vaccinated for free or at a low cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-medicare-cover-vaccines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Medicare cover vaccines?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Medicare covers vaccines, only certain parts of Medicare provide these benefits. It\u2019s important to understand which vaccines may be covered under each Medicare plan so you prepare accordingly. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medicare-formulary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plan\u2019s formulary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will have additional details regarding the specific vaccines that are covered by your specific insurance plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What vaccines are covered by Medicare?<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"part-b-vaccine-coverage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part B vaccine coverage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part B (outpatient medical insurance) covers only a few vaccines as part of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/Medicare\/Prevention\/PrevntionGenInfo\/medicare-preventive-services\/MPS-QuickReferenceChart-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare\u2019s Preventive Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In order to receive a Medicare-covered vaccine, you must see a participating provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccines covered by Medicare Part B include:<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Influenza (flu) vaccine:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Part B covers one flu shot per flu season. You can get the vaccine upon request without a physician\u2019s order. A physician must prescribe the vaccines. Your physician will also need to write a prescription for it. Covered Hepatitis B vaccines include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/heplisav-b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heplisav-B<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part B also covers vaccines needed to treat an injury or illness, such as a tetanus shot after stepping on a rusty nail or a rabies vaccine after getting bitten by a stray animal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hepatitis-b-vaccine\/\"><b>Should you get the Hepatitis B vaccine?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"covid-vaccine-coverage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID vaccine coverage<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part B and Medicare Advantage plans cover the COVID-19 vaccine at no cost to consumers. In cases where other services are provided during the same appointment as the COVID-19 vaccine, you may still be required to pay for those additional services, including the office visit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare also covers COVID-19 vaccine booster shots at least five months after your second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine series, or at least two months after you received the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you paid or were billed for a COVID-19 vaccine, contact your provider\u2019s office to discuss these charges. You should not be charged any fees associated with getting the COVID-19 vaccine. Part D provides prescription drug coverage for Medicare beneficiaries through private insurance companies. Part D coverage is available through either a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan (PDP) if you have Original Medicare (Parts A or B) or a Medicare Advantage Plan with prescription drug coverage (MA-PD) through Part C.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part D plans cover all commercially available vaccines that are reasonable and necessary to prevent illness, except those covered by Medicare Part B.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventive vaccines covered by Medicare Part D include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Herpes zoster (shingles) vaccine:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Part D covers a one-time vaccine given in two shots over a two- to six-month period. Covered shingles vaccines include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/shingrix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingrix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-medicare-cover-shingles-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn more about Medicare coverage of shingles vaccines here.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccine:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Part D covers one shot if you\u2019ve never been vaccinated, along with a booster every 10 years. Covered MMR vaccines include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/m-m-r-ii\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M-M-R Ii<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/varicella\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> two doses of the chickenpox vaccine scheduled at least 28 days apart. Covered chickenpox vaccines include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/varivax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Varivax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other vaccines covered: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccines that are reasonable and necessary to prevent illness but aren\u2019t covered by Part B are also covered by Medicare Part D plans.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part D plans may also cover <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/travel-vaccines-overseas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccines needed for traveling internationally<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Discuss upcoming travel plans with your doctor or healthcare provider to determine which vaccinations you may need. Common vaccines recommended for traveling abroad include yellow fever (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/yf-vax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yf-Vax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and Hepatitis A (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/havrix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Havrix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vaqta\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaqta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-get-vaccinated\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get vaccinated<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccine appointments are available at many locations throughout the United States. \u201cA great place for people to get vaccines is their local pharmacy or provider office,\u201d explains Dr. Boartfield. \u201cYou can also check out your local and state health departments for a list of more options near you.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all providers can administer every vaccine and not all providers accept Medicare, so it\u2019s best to check ahead of time. If you have drug coverage through a Medicare Advantage plan, your network of providers may be more limited than those with Original Medicare and a stand-alone Part D plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some vaccines require a doctor\u2019s prescription. \u201cMost vaccines are available at your local pharmacy without a prescription, however, there are a few less common vaccines that still may require a prescription. This varies by state. The best way to determine this is to consult your local pharmacy or health clinic to determine which ones require a prescription,\u201d says Dr. Boartfield.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"are-vaccines-free-with-medicare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are vaccines free with Medicare?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some vaccines may be free with Medicare, that\u2019s not always the case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccines covered by Medicare Part B plans are generally provided at no cost to you if the provider accepts Medicare. However, as mentioned above, you may owe a copay or coinsurance for the visit if you receive other services at the same time as the vaccination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cost of vaccines covered by Medicare Part D varies based on the specific plan and the location where you get vaccinated. Pharmacies can often administer vaccines at a lower cost than doctor\u2019s offices. That said, you may be responsible for copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of the Medicare plan, the COVID-19 vaccine is free\u200c\u2014you shouldn\u2019t have to pay a deductible, copayment, or an administration fee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vaccine-discounts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to save on vaccines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When fees or copays apply to vaccines, there are ways to save money.
