Some home remedies for anxiety can help the moment anxious feelings strike. Others require regular time investment. Employ adaptive tools<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adaptive tools were popularized in use with neurodiverse children but may benefit everyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/can-weighted-blankets-banish-nighttime-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Weighted blankets<\/b><\/a><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which were originally used for autistic children, are now popular with people of all ages, including anxious people, because of the calming effect of a heavy blanket. It\u2019s usually recommended to get a blanket no more than 10% of the user\u2019s body weight. Many report improved sleep and feelings of well-being when they use weighted blankets.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tactile tools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or something you do with your hands, are often used in pediatric occupational therapy. However, many adults find physical items like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fidget <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spinners<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">textured hand-held tools<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doodling<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, help to decrease anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31125164\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Chewing gum<\/b><\/a><b>, chewy or crunchy foods, or using a <\/b><b>\u201cchewy\u201d toy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been proven to reduce anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"6-spend-time-outside\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Spend time outside<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spending time in nature has been clinically proven to reduce anxiety in adults. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6379348\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that walking in a green environment can reduce feelings of stress. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-021-87675-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nature connectedness had positive outcomes for people\u2019s mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can even help if you\u2019re experiencing acute anxiety. Shocking the system with cold, fresh air or water can sometimes snap people out of anxiety attacks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17993252\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because it activates the sympathetic nervous system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-try-herbal-teas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Try herbal teas\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cup of tea may help with relaxation\u2014particularly herbal teas such as chamomile tea. There is some evidence that chamomile can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5650245\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And that\u2019s not the only beneficial drink.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green tea contains an amino acid called L-theanine that may improve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31758301\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress and anxiety symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While the evidence is limited, the ritual of taking a moment for yourself to sip a warm beverage can have relaxing effects beyond just the antioxidants that tea contains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-prioritize-leisure-time\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Prioritize leisure time<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we think of time off, leisure time, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/self-care-checklist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it brings to mind feeling relaxed and free from worry. Indeed, taking time to do things for yourself outside of the confines of a work day or a day serving others can help reduce your stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating a more relaxing work and\/or home environment with pictures\/paintings that are pleasing to the eye is recommended as well,\u201d says Dr. Feibel. \u201cIn addition, listening to classical or soft music can be helpful for anxiety.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-avoid-alcohol-and-caffeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Avoid alcohol and caffeine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A glass of wine might seem like it will help you relax, but alcohol and recreational drugs can exacerbate anxiety. Caffeine can exacerbate the jittery, edgy feeling common among people experiencing heightened anxiety. \u201cReduce or avoid self-medicating with caffeine, alcohol, or drugs,\u201d Dr. Zablow recommends. \u201cResist isolating and inactivity.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, both alcohol and caffeine can disrupt the sleep cycle, which leads to less restful sleep. Being tired may exacerbate feelings of anxiety and may decrease the ability to deal with everyday stressors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"10-eat-a-healthy-diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. Eat a healthy diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An anti-inflammatory <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anti-anxiety-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diet that nourishes your body can help your mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While the research is limited, consuming fresh fruit and vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids, water, probiotics, and even chocolate are considered part of a healthy lifestyle. In other words, it may help to try some of these swaps and see if they work to decrease your anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"anxiety-remedies-that-don-t-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety remedies that don\u2019t work<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many old wives\u2019 tales, myths, and misconceptions about treating anxiety. Some well-known remedies don\u2019t work, lack evidence, or can actually do more harm than good, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Essential oils:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While lavender, rose, citrus, bergamot, and other essential oils are often marketed as helping anxiety, many have not been studied enough to say that they help anxiety beyond the relaxing effect they might have on someone who enjoys their aromas.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Herbal supplements: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany herbal treatments are unregulated and of little benefit,\u201d Dr. Zablow says. \u201cThey can cause harm when poorly made or if they contain contaminants.\u201d Supplements are not regulated by the FDA, so there\u2019s no guarantee that the claims they make are true or that the ingredients they contain are safe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Marijuana, cannabis, and cannabidiol (CBD): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people self-medicate with marijuana, cannabis, or cannabidiol (CBD). However, with overuse, dependence on the drug over time, or improper dosing, these remedies are ineffective or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adai.uw.edu\/pubs\/pdf\/2017mjanxiety.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can make anxiety worse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Frequent marijuana use may also lead to other health issues like cyclic vomiting syndrome and respiratory issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly, do not stop your anxiety medication cold turkey in favor of natural remedies. Always talk to the prescriber before changing or stopping your medication. If you are dissatisfied with the results of your anti-anxiety medication, meet with your physician. You may need a dosage or medication change, or you may benefit from adjunctive complementary therapies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-anxiety-when-natural-remedies-don-t-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat anxiety when natural remedies don\u2019t work<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If natural remedies don\u2019t work as well as you would like, discuss with your healthcare provider. There are additional treatment options for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"therapy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therapy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many types of therapy to help with anxiety, with proven, clinical studies to back up their claims of efficacy.
