Caffeine is consumed by over 80% of adults in the U.S. and has been shown to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enhance alertness and reaction time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but can there be too much of a good thing? This can lead to feelings of nervous energy or \u201cjitters\u201d but caffeine does not directly cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is defined as a feeling of worry, unease, or dread.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though caffeine intake has been shown to be associated with some psychiatric symptoms like anxiety, nervousness etc., there is no evidence of causality i.e., no evidence yet to suggest that caffeine itself is causing them,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajnish Jaiswal, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, associate chief of emergency medicine at NYC Health and Hospitals Metropolitan Hospital in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine does not directly cause anxiety, but it can make anxiety symptoms worse, especially when consumed in excess. So, how much coffee is too much? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends a daily limit of 400 mg of caffeine for healthy adults <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is equal to about four, 8-ounce cups of brewed coffee or 10 cans of cola.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some symptoms of overusing caffeine include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nervousness\/restlessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking more than the recommended daily amount of coffee for an extended period of time may also lead to caffeine withdrawal symptoms (such as headaches, fatigue, and irritability) when a person tries to cut back on caffeine intake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most people, moderate caffeine intake is safe and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/9-reasons-why-the-right-amount-of-coffee-is-good-for-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coffee even boasts some health benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when enjoyed in moderation, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/advances-in-psychiatric-treatment\/article\/neuropsychiatric-effects-of-caffeine\/7C884B2106D772F02DA114C1B75D4EBF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that excessive caffeine consumption can lead to symptoms that overlap with those of many psychiatric disorders and that it may exacerbate anxiety\u2014especially for those with anxiety disorders and\/or sleep disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"does-caffeine-make-anxiety-worse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does caffeine make anxiety worse?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/anxiety-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a mental health disorder in which a person experiences overwhelming feelings of worry and fear, interfering with daily life and activities. There are several types of anxiety disorders including generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Those with anxiety disorders may want to decrease their daily caffeine intake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/xanax-and-coffee\/\"><b>Is it safe to mix Xanax with coffee?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCaffeine is known for its mild stimulant effects and excessive amounts can lead to jitteriness, anxiety, irritability, and insomnia,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindpath.com\/staff\/brian-zachariah-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brian Zachariah<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a psychiatrist with Mindpath Health.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIn fact, it&#8217;s listed in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DSM-5<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) under causes for substance-induced anxiety disorders (caffeine-induced anxiety disorder).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4115451\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine-induced anxiety disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a condition recognized by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Psychiatric Association where the symptoms of anxiety are directly caused by the excessive consumption of caffeine and are interfering with a person\u2019s daily functioning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We still don&#8217;t have evidence that caffeine directly induces anxiety, but caffeine intake has been known to be associated with anxiety symptoms,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nychealthandhospitals.org\/doctors\/jaiswal-rajnish\/\">Dr. Jaiswal says<\/a>. \u201cExcessive caffeine intake can cause palpitations, sweating, nervousness, change in mood or behavior in healthy individuals and worsen them in people suffering from anxiety disorders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, drinking large amounts of coffee may cause interactions with some medications and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdlinx.com\/article\/don-t-drink-coffee-with-these-vitamins\/2OI25UJKhJQllHAjBlNNQU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dietary supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCaffeine does interact with several classes of medications (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antiarrhythmics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antiarrhythmics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antipsychotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antipsychotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/bronchodilators\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bronchodilators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and of concern with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluvoxamine-maleate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluvoxamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is an SSRI medication often used for anxiety disorders,\u201d Dr. Zachariah says. \u201cAlso, the effects of caffeine can mimic worsening anxiety, wherein providers may increase the dose of the anxiolytic medication without realizing the actual culprit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people may not think to mention their daily caffeine intake with their healthcare provider, but it\u2019s important\u2014especially for those who are drinking many caffeinated beverages daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is some data that show caffeine can affect the absorption and metabolism of certain medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bupropion-hcl-er-xl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bupropion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/clozapine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clozapine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but more studies are still needed to establish a definite interaction,\u201d Dr. Jaiswal says. He says that for those who consume high amounts of caffeine (more than 400 mg a day) \u201csome changes may have to be made to their anxiety medications after discussion with their treating physician.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-coffee-trigger-panic-attacks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can coffee trigger panic attacks?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine intake has not been directly linked to panic attacks, but excessive caffeine consumption could possibly be a contributing factor to a panic attack.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those who live with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anxiety-attack-vs-panic-attack\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety and\/or panic disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, changes in the body (such as increased heart rate, blood pressure, and sweating that can be caused by caffeine) may trigger the fight or flight response and raise internal alarms that a panic attack is starting, which may lead to intense feelings of anxiety and even a full-blown panic attack in some cases<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19698996\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people with panic disorder who were given a large dose of caffeine (480 mg) had a hyperreactivity and higher number of induced panic attacks than people with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generalized social anxiety disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and people with no anxiety diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-long-does-caffeine-induced-anxiety-symptoms-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does caffeine-induced anxiety symptoms last?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One reason for the popularity of coffee is that its effects are felt rather quickly, which can be a wonderful thing in those early morning hours when you feel sluggish. When too much caffeine is ingested, however, unpleasant symptoms may last a while as caffeine stays in the system for several hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCaffeine\u2019s effects can vary due to individual variation, but it usually starts to peak in effect in about 15 minutes and wears off in about two and a half to five hours,\u201d Dr. Zachariah says. Dr. Jaiswal agrees: \u201cThere is a wide range of when and how long caffeine lasts in people as many factors like age, gender, genetics, lifestyles can influence it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine may not completely leave your system for 10 hours and can interfere with sleep. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sleepeducation.org\/sleep-caffeine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Sleep Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends avoiding caffeine in late afternoon or evening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-prevent-and-overcome-caffeine-induced-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent and overcome caffeine-induced anxiety<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To prevent unwanted caffeine side effects that mimic anxiety symptoms, consume caffeine in moderation and be aware of how many caffeinated products you may ingest daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people don&#8217;t realize that caffeine is present in many other foods and drinks besides coffee and hence may be underestimating their total caffeine intake,\u201d Dr. Jaiswal says. In addition to coffee, caffeine can also be found in energy drinks, soft drinks, green tea, and chocolate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve overindulged with any caffeinated products and want to minimize the unpleasant side effects, stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water and exercise to help your body metabolize the caffeine faster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are sensitive to caffeine (or who want to consume less) may try drinking alternatives such as decaffeinated coffee, decaf espresso, herbal tea, golden milk, or lemon water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In all, drinking coffee in moderation is safe for most people.
