SNRIs<\/span><\/a> are another first-line therapy for depression and an alternative to Trintellix. Like SSRIs, most SNRIs are FDA-approved to treat various mental health conditions as well, including anxiety. SNRIs work differently from <\/span>Trintellix<\/span> in that they increase levels of both serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. Increased norepinephrine in the brain improves energy, motivation, focus, and mood. <\/span>Possible side effects<\/span> of <\/span>SNRIs<\/span> include nausea, dry mouth, and dizziness. These <\/span>antidepressant medications<\/span> can also cause <\/span>sexual side effects<\/span>, such as decreased libido.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. <\/span>Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors<\/span> (<\/span>SSRIs<\/span>), such as <\/span>fluoxetine<\/span>, <\/span>Zoloft<\/span> (<\/span>sertraline<\/span>), and <\/span>Lexapro<\/span> (<\/span>escitalopram<\/span>)<\/span><\/h3>\n

SSRIs<\/span><\/a> are approved by the <\/span>Food and Drug Administration<\/span> (<\/span>FDA<\/span>) to treat <\/span>major depressive disorder<\/span>. In addition to treating depression, most <\/span>SSRIs<\/span> are also used to treat other mental health conditions, including <\/span>anxiety<\/span><\/a>, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or panic disorder. SSRIs are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants and usually the first medication prescribed to treat depression or anxiety. They work by increasing serotonin levels in the brain, allowing patients more control over their mood.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because SSRIs are the most commonly prescribed depression treatment, some people taking Trintellix may have previously taken an SSRI. An untried SSRI may be appropriate if there are problems with Trintellix or if cost is an issue. <\/span>Common side effects<\/span> of <\/span>SSRIs<\/span> include dry mouth, nausea, and insomnia. <\/span>Sexual side effects<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>weight gain<\/span> are also common with <\/span>SSRIs<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
