However, when it comes to medical advice, it\u2019s best to consult reliable sources before trying any new fads. Some TikTok trends are more than misguided; they\u2019re potentially dangerous. One recent example is the suggestion that dry scooping pre-workout powders is a safe way to boost your performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@singlecare\"><b>Follow SingleCare on TikTok<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is dry scooping?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 70% of young adults consume at least one nutritional supplement and one of the most popular categories is the pre-workout energy drinks designed to boost energy and athletic endurance, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jissn.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12970-016-0138-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Pre-workout powders are meant to be dissolved in water. Dry scooping involves swallowing a scoopful of powder without diluting it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-workout powder is a multi-ingredient supplement, explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/learning.baptisthealth.net\/residencies-and-fellowships\/medical-residencies-and-fellowships\/family-medicine\/primary-care-sports-medicine-fellowship\/sports-medicine-fellows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melissa Nicoletti, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a sports medicine specialist in Coral Gables, Florida. \u201cA lot of the ingredients,\u201d Dr. Nicoletti says, \u201care naturally occurring in our body, but having this extra boost gives you more energy in the performance of the workout. The biggest appeal for the dry scooping part is faster absorption.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/fitness-supplements\/\"><b>Do fitness supplements really work?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is dry scooping safe?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TikTok videos claim that dry scooping pre-workout not only boosts energy and increases endurance, but delivers these results much faster. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, dry scooping\u2014which ignores manufacturer recommendations\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can result in serious side effects and possibly land you in the hospital. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en\/news-room\/news-releases\/aap\/2021\/research-dangerous-challenge-on-dry-scooping-pre-workout-powder-is-prevalent-popular-on-internet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presented at the 2021 American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference and Exhibition warned that dry scooping has the potential for \u201caccidental overconsumption, inhalation, and injury.\u201d \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry scooping can cause a variety of symptoms, which should prompt users to seek medical advice:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/heart-palpitations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart palpitations<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irregular or accelerated heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience any of these symptoms, you can call <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/articles\/dry-scooping-can-be-life-threatening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poison Control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for guidance on whether to head to the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is dry scooping bad?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several reasons to skip this fad. Learn more about the risks of dry scooping.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Caffeine overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people consume caffeine every day\u2014in coffee, tea, or even in foods like chocolate. Pre-workout powders also contain this popular stimulant, just in powder form. When used correctly, you mix a scoop with water, which dilutes the caffeine. \u201cWhen you just consume it straight from the container without diluting it, you\u2019re getting a high dose of caffeine and the other ingredients all at once,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/kelly-johnson-arbor-bio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kelly Johnson-Arbor, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a medical toxicologist and co-medical director of the National Capital Poison Center. \u201cThat could be problematic. That could be poisonous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA estimates that an eight-ounce cup of coffee contains about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/spilling-beans-how-much-caffeine-too-much\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 mg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of caffeine, but some coffee\u2014espresso or cold brew\u2014can have more. A scoop of one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gnc.com\/nitric-oxide\/beyondRawLitAF.html?correlationId=b9f2f975-46e7-4711-89b7-5c3af749cebc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">popular brand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of workout powder contains three times the caffeine content of a cup of coffee and delivers it all at once. Without any liquid to dilute the caffeine, ingesting pre-workout can result in caffeine poisoning. In 2021, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/briatney-portillo-pre-workout-dry-scooping-heart-attack-tiktok-trend-1597094\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newsweek<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported an incident of a dry scooping pre-workout heart attack in a 20-year-old woman and also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/dry-scooping-pre-workout-tiktok-trend-went-dangerously-wrong-these-people-1597622\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the story of a male fitness influencer who tried dry scooping and went to the ER with a stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High levels of caffeine have negative side effects from shakiness to abnormal heart rhythms. \u201cThis can be exacerbated with the dry scooping [and the] rapid absorption into your body,\u201d Dr. Nicoletti says. \u201cYou can get tremors, seizures, irregular heartbeat. Your blood pressure and your heart rate are going to go up. This is similar to having a dose of amphetamine in your system, and this is all before working out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a normal workout, your heart rate and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-pressure-after-exercise\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> naturally increase. And that\u2019s without any pre-workout supplementation. \u201cWhile the pre-workout might give you that extra motivation, that boost to work out, it\u2019s compounding the extra work your heart is doing to ensure proper blood flow,\u201d Dr. Nicoletti says. \u201cYour heart might not be able to keep up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/chest-pain-causes-treatment\/\"><b>Common causes of chest pain<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Inhalation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another risk associated with dry scooping is accidental inhalation. It&#8217;s difficult to swallow chalky, dry powder, so it poses a choking hazard. Because the supplement powder is so chalky, it forces you essentially to gasp for air, which means the powder can go into your lungs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s called aspiration, which can potentially cause irritation, inflammation, and infection,\u201d Dr. Nicoletti says. Aspiration can lead to pneumonia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Overexertion or injury<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you dry scoop, you might work out for longer than normal without feeling as tired. That\u2019s the whole point of pre-workout powders, but when taken to the extreme, they can be dangerous. \u201cThere\u2019s also an increased risk of injury because you\u2019re overexerting yourself,\u201d says Dr. Nicoletti. \u201cYou have that extra boost that you received from the dry scooping, and you might have a decreased rate of perceived exertion. You\u2019re able to push past it faster and harder, and that may result in an unintentional injury.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Stomach problems<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides caffeine, pre-workouts often contain ingredients such as creatine (a substance naturally found in muscle cells), the amino acids beta alanine and l-arginine, as well as various artificial sweeteners. Ingesting a big dose of artificial sweeteners so rapidly can cause GI distress, such as diarrhea and cramping.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Muscle tingling<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beta-alanine, a common ingredient in protein powders, is thought to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2887393\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">delay lactic acid build-up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and cramping, which allows you to work out for a longer period of time at a higher level. However, a large dose may also have an unexpected side effect: a tingling sensation. \u201cUsually [the tingling sensation] moves through your body very quickly, and it can be a little bit uncomfortable,\u201d Dr. Nicoletti says. \u201cNot everyone gets that side effect. But when you pre-scoop, without water, it\u2019s very common.\u201d That tingling feeling can spread to your whole body, similar to the pins and needles sensation when a body part \u201cfalls asleep.\u201d This feeling can lead to anxiety and further increase your heart rate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Dizziness or fainting<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another common pre-workout ingredient is l-arginine, which is the amino acid that helps the body build protein. It is a precursor to nitric oxide. \u201cThe purpose of nitric oxide\u2014which is found in medications some people take\u2014is that it helps to increase blood flow,\u201d Dr. Nicoletti says. \u201cWell, if you are dry scooping, you are getting a large amount of this vasodilation, which is increasing blood flow, and it can cause people to have extreme dizziness and pass out from it.\u201d This may cause problems when a large amount is taken by a person already using medication to increase blood flow.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Exacerbation of existing conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-workout supplements may cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6520716\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people with pre-existing conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or respiratory issues, even when taken as directed. People with these types of health issues should talk to a healthcare provider before trying any new supplement\u2014whether dry scooping or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Interaction with current medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another consideration is that dietary supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and that means it can be hard to know exactly what\u2019s in them. \u201cPeople who use these products need to be careful as they might be getting ingredients they aren\u2019t expecting,\u201d Dr. Johnson-Arbor says. \u201cAnd those ingredients may interact with over-the-counter and prescription medications.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to use pre-workout safely<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPre-workout can absolutely be safe if you\u2019re taking it based on the label and reading the instructions,\u201d Dr. Nicoletti says. \u201cBut if it\u2019s your first time or you know you have a sensitivity, it&#8217;s recommended that you don\u2019t do the full scoop.\u201d Start slow with a half or quarter dosage, then see how your body reacts. Take it as indicated, by dissolving it\u2014not dry scooping\u2014and hydrate throughout your workout. It\u2019s also advisable to check with your primary care provider or pharmacist before introducing a new supplement to your diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think that the safest way to use these products is to use them as directed on the package label,\u201d Dr. Johnson-Arbor says. \u201cIt might not be as exciting as what\u2019s seen on TikTok these days, but that is more likely the safer way to use them.
