Per Gorin, a half cup of cucumber gives you two grams of protein and two grams of fiber to keep you feeling fuller for longer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Boling agrees, adding that cucumber\u2019s satiating power can even help you with weight loss or maintaining a healthy weight. They are anti-inflammatory.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cucumbers are chock full of antioxidants, like lignans, and minerals, such as potassium and magnesium, that Dr. Boling says can have anti-inflammatory effects on your body when you eat enough of them. They can improve bone health.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t seem like the simple cucumber would be able to strengthen much of anything except your gin and tonic game, but it\u2019s actually packed with vitamin K\u2014a nutrient responsible for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cureus.com\/articles\/41063-influence-of-vitamin-k-on-bone-mineral-density-and-osteoporosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proper bone formation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and calcium absorption. In fact, vitamin K supplementation has also been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2566998\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked to reducing fractures in women with low bone mineral density<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so if you\u2019re postmenopausal, it certainly can\u2019t hurt to find some way to increase your cucumber intake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"10-they-might-prevent-hair-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. They might prevent hair loss.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of all the other good stuff found in cucumbers, you\u2019ll also discover silica: a natural element that promotes the growth of collagen and connective tissue in your skin, making it stronger and more elastic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does this have to do with hair? Well, an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4938278\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that, in addition to skin benefits, silica can reduce hair loss and thinning, as well as make hair appear brighter. You may need silica supplementation to correct severe hair loss, but eating your fair share of cucumbers might be able to ward off some hair-related signs of aging.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"cucumber-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cucumber side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you know how wonderful cucumbers are, you should probably know that you can\u2019t just eat cucumbers all day, every day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you eat only cucumbers, you won\u2019t get the wide variety of nutrients that you need,\u201d Dr. Boling says. In other words, add cucumbers into your diet on a regular basis but don\u2019t go on an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actual <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cucumber diet. Balance is key.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"digestive-or-nutritional-issues\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digestive or nutritional issues<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you increase your cucumber intake only to find you\u2019re experiencing some digestive distress, that\u2019s a sign to slow down a little. Remember, cucumbers are good for your digestion, but not everyone can tolerate their benefits at high amounts. \u201cEverybody has their own sensitivities to food, and it\u2019s possible that people may be sensitive to the fiber and water content in cucumber, [causing] looser stools than normal,\u201d Dr. Boling adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as cucumber\u2019s overall safety, it has a pretty harmless profile. You can eat cucumber at virtually any time of the day or night, and it\u2019s not known to have any <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/grapefruit-juice-with-medicine-other-foods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interactions with common foods, supplements, or medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin K in general can reduce the effectiveness of some blood thinning medications used to prevent blood clots, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but cucumber doesn\u2019t make it onto the list of foods high enough in vitamin K to avoid while taking these medications. Still, you should always ask your doctor if you have any concerns about drug interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"toxicity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toxicity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, some people on the internet have warned about cucumber\u2019s potential toxicity, in a phenomenon known as \u201ctoxic squash syndrome.\u201d The cucurbitacins in cucumbers\u2014and other members of the cucumber family, like pumpkin and squash\u2014can sometimes become dangerously elevated in these vegetables, causing not only an extremely bitter taste but also a bad case of food poisoning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toxic squash syndrome is not extremely common. So far, according to a handful of studies, it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/15563650.2018.1424891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hasn\u2019t resulted in any deaths<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That said, if you ever bite into a cucumber from the grocery store or your own garden and it tastes very bitter, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.oregonstate.edu\/ask-expert\/featured\/are-volunteer-squash-toxic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toss the whole thing out rather than eating it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, just to be on the safe side.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-maximize-the-benefits-of-cucumbers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to maximize the benefits of cucumbers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of easy ways to add more cucumber into your diet, but some of them are more beneficial than others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"leave-the-peel-on\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leave the peel on<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The peel of a cucumber is actually where many of its nutrients are found, so if you\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionvalue.org\/Cucumber%2C_raw%2C_with_peel_nutritional_value.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eating cucumber to boost your vitamin and mineral intake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you should leave the peel on rather than removing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind, though, that if you\u2019re planning to reap the health benefits of unpeeled cucumbers, you might want to either buy organic or plan to clean your cucumbers well: \u201cIf you\u2019re going to eat the peel of the cucumber and you have the extra grocery dollars, it\u2019s worth considering buying organic,\u201d says Gorin, \u201c[but either way], make sure to wash the peel well before you eat the veggie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"blend-don-t-juice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blend, don\u2019t juice<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While cucumber juice sounds like a delicious way to cool down on a hot day, stick to tossing cucumbers in the blender rather than juicing them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019d suggest blending cucumber into a smoothie so that you get the benefits of the whole vegetable\u2014including the fiber,\u201d says Gorin. \u201cWhen you juice, oftentimes the fiber is discarded.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"eat-raw-not-pickled\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat raw, not pickled<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two types of people in this world: pickle lovers and pickle haters. While enjoying pickle slices on a burger is totally fine (and delicious), try not to rely on pickles for your cucumber intake.
